It is just me or are character designs in popular shounen nowadays more simple and looser? Compare Jojo and D.Gray-Man or even something not as complex like Shaman King designs to CSM/JJK/Kagurabachi to see what I mean: in the latter the character designs feel much less fluttered and more uniform/very simplistic while Araki puts a lot of veried props and crazy stuff to things like outfits and such.

everything in society is getting increasingly monotone and streamlined

There's 0 good designs on the left though. That style has always looked like shit i hate the big fucking feet and hands and scoliosis spine.

That's why I hate this dark & edgy shonen trend. The good old days died with My Hero Academia.

Character designs are a separate matter from art style, though. Remember, the same character can be drawn in countless various art styles and still be recognizable.

I think recognizability, iconicness, identifiability, is the most important part of a character design, considering it's a product to be marketed.

Yep, Gojo is a great example of that.

Say what you want about the story but KnY has very strong designs, so much so that they can be broken down into the most abstract form and still be that character.

We all know Gege sucks at drawing girls, but damn he did Momo dirty there.

because it has soul. unlike 90% of nushonen

That's something I noticed, for example characters drawn by Togashi and Oda are never the same (Except Nami clones) They now how to manipulate expressions, proportions, styles and colors.

Authors are more cognizant that their works will be animated if they hit big and streamlined designs animate better.

Sameface syndrome is now a quality? KnY desings are trash. I can barely tell the villains apart, they're so generic.

It has the least case of same face unless the characters are related.

It's a personal preference thing. Kishimoto liked drawing, but when it came to including every single character in the war, he put everyone in the same outfit to cut down on work. Some mangaka are sickos, some are pragmatic and don't want to burden themselves. There's no singular perfect way.

D.Gray-man back in the day was peak 2000s chuuni kino and knowing that style is lost makes me so sad. Even DGM itself lost its touch and now looks like some shojo shit.

You know a face isn't just made of eyes, right? The characters look like they were created using an OC Creator app. The mangaka's luck is that in the anime there is color to help.
>>
>>281845180
They are the most important part of the face though. If you shave them and strip them naked you can still tell who is who.

Why don't you read Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi
>>
>>281845325
That's the basics. Most works can do this. If I make an image with the eyes of the characters from DDD (one of the biggest examples of sameface syndrome) we can also tell who's who. Being iconic, on the other hand, is more difficult.
>>
>>281841719
Yeah, everyone wears the same boring uniform. Creativity is truly dead.

They actually cant funny enough

Sailor moon has the biggest case of same face syndrome but anyone can recognize her design the moment someone else draws her.

Lately I've been trying to watch the remake of the Shaman King anime, but I hate how it looks. I kinda hate it in general. I watched the first anime as a kid (shitty European dub) ages ago so I barely remember the show, but I remember liking the designs, animation, and the characters much more than in the remake. Like, I don't recall Ryu being a lolicon and the characters in general are annoying.

Is it nostalgia talking, or is the new version actually shit? Is the art direction just more faithful to the original? Was the American dub (I guess that's what the dub I watched was based on) censored so much stuff it messed with the characterization?

Why would you think your perception isn't objectively correct?
