The characters are very flat is my only real complaint, the story is not really about anyone's character development and more about the mindgames between the user of the death note and the detective.

I won't spoil anything but after a certain thing happens 2/3 in It bicomes a bit more lame, hence why it didn't get a 9

You've really only watched the most basic battle shounen, and Avatar which is a western cartoon, and Ghibli stuff.
Some decent stuff, especially Yu Yu Hakusho, but nothing amazing.

Find a Shoujo, a Mecha, and something from at least 20 years before you were born.
