Setting aside the combiners gimmick, while Koji was a tough guy you can't compare him to the sheer insanity and ruthlessness of guys like Ryouma and Hayate. If Kabuto is a knight, Ryouma, Hayate and Musashi are spaghetti western cowboys or ronin. Then there's also the visual identity aspect, chronologically, Ishikawa's panelling is already more expressive and dynamic than Nagai's first few series, though I'd say they're matched in character expressions. Ishikawa was also the first to introduce the mecha Gore and horror elements to his story, whereas Nagai had already made full blown horror with 1971 and 72's Demon Lord Dante and Devilman respectively, whereas Nagai incorporated it into his own Super Robo manga after Great Mazinger.

They developed it for a while but then Nagai and Ishikawa were shown a prototype combining Getter Robo toy which prompted them to request that Toei do a Getter remake instead. Toei wanted Nagai-styled protagonists so you'll see that anime Go looks just like Kouji and Sho looks like Cutie Honey. All of the villain and robot designs for the anime were drafted by Ken Ishikawa though. The project was called Getter Apache then Getter Robo J before settling on Getter Robo Go. I'm not sure why it's called Go other than "Go" (as in the forward movement) being a popular English word in mecha anime. The anime was first developed as a "real robot" styled show with a prototype Getter and no Getter energy but then the season season shifted towards a 70s styled robot show with a Ichiro Mizuki OP. The anime team wanted to bring back Hayato Jin to connect the series with the original Getter Robo but scheduling conflicts with the original VA killed that idea.
