You have to remember at one point these series were new and weren't super long. If they were bad at the beginning nobody would have watched (or read) them and they would have been cancelled. At the same time, saying a series gets better as it goes on isn't saying that it gets good after x number of episodes. The ideal is that a series continues to get better as it goes on. For Monogatari though, it's not uncommon for people to say that Bakemonogatari is the best part of the series. I think they're wrong, but saying that is the opposite of "it gets good after x episodes".
