he's so retarded, how can anyone watch this show and not come away sad about how the cyberpunk genre has been hollowed out and commodified into like 3 tired, worn-out tropes that make the normies ooh and ah??>stable-ish upbringing and loving mother>weird quirk that makes him able to do things no other two-bit punk of his weight class can do>hot cyberhacker girlfriend with dreams beyond anything he can process>shitloads of money, even relatively early on>witnesses the tragic deaths of his friends from cyberpsychosis or terminal overconfidence or ambitionthen he just decides he has to be scarface and climb the rungs of society??? doing all these jobs and roiding the hell out despite very clearly seeing what happens when you don't take your health seriously??? he gives up on trying to emotionally connect and understand people, which was his one actual unique trait??? AND THE ONLY JUSTIFICATION THE SHOW GIVES IS "uhh uhh don't follow someone elses dreams, follow your dreams," clearly not knowing his dream is apparently getting smoked because his magic beep boop techsuit can't do shit when it comes up against anyone who's not some dumb street punk? AND THEN IT ENDS?????dumbfuck
>>281870749>weird quirk that makes him able to do things no other two-bit punk of his weight class can doHe just has a fancy toy grafted onto his spinal column, nothing more
>its another "societal reject with no ambition is confused about why other people have ambitions" thread>but its not le logical why did he do a le not logical thing???
>>281870749you could say the same thing thing about every somewhat notable genre
>>281870749The pointlessness of it all was itself the point.
>>281870791ambition is one thing but why the hell does he have a suicidal sacrifice complex, especially since he DOES have things to live for?
>>281870791Why are you bringing an ad-hominem argument into this?
>>281870749Having Maine as his role model fucked him up. He wanted the same live fast lifestyle, he just thought it'd be ok because he's slightly more resistant to cyberpsychosis than others.

>>281870859>>281870749yeah the point was that he was making bad choices
>I hate how these plays have like 3 tired, worn out tropes that make the citizens ooh and ah>and the only justification the play gives is “uhh hubris don’t challenge fate”Why is it always the dumbest people who complain the loudest?
>>281871444because if a character has the ability and agency to do shit like rise in the ranks of the criminal underworld or get chromed out, then they absolutely have the means or ability to simply not do dumb shit that gets them killed, but they still die because muh tragedy or muh melodrama or muh contemplation on the uselessness of free will or whatever
>>281871493It’s kind of wild that people like you have been considered stupid for thousands of years
>>281871517Why are you so angry nigga chill
>triggerdon't care, didn't watch
>>281871547You’re the one seething because you refuse to accept the basics of storytelling that have been understood for thousands of years and everyone is laughing at you for trying this shit with yet another show
>>281871517>you're dumb for wanting explanation about the forced writing and melodrama that ruins characters and works by hand-waving away any need for any deeper reflection on any other themesalright bud didn't mean to ruffle your intellectual feathers
>>281871582You announce your stupidity for all to see when you try and pile on buzzwords like forced writing, did you actually expect anything besides being laughed at for your posts where you complain about storytelling standards that every high schooler gets taught?
>>281870749>doing all these jobs and roiding the hell out despite very clearly seeing what happens when you don't take your health seriouslygo on /fit/ and you see these types everywheresad part is they won't even see a fraction of success
>>281871694It’s almost like one of the themes is examining the culture of masculinity that would have men focus on their bodies while neglecting mental health…
>>281870749Because he was wrong. After his (justified) crashout in ep 2 he decided to live the life Maine did and have him as his role model. Once you start killing for a job its hard to come back to a normal, quiet life. Lucy was right in trying to escape the place altogethere
The show wasn't made to be a masterpiece. It was more about money so yeah, they made something that will hit 'normies'.
OP is autistic and has never encountered a protagonist he cannot self insert into before.
>>281870749Coming at it from the angle of the RPG the game/anime were based off of, I never thought he had some special quirk, just a really high amount of humanity/empathy (a meta currency and stat that act as a limit to how much cyberware you can handle)
>>281871914But the main character doesn't act like a logical robot and makes mistakes! It's unforgivable that a character have tragic flaws that lead to his downfall!
>>281871914OP makes the exact same type of complaint about all sorts of shows, this certainly isn’t the first time lol
I will somewhat agree with the OP purely as it relates to the cyberpunk genre but it’s an ultimately pretentious stance to take. They completely nailed the classical tragedy and otaku metamyth of the superpowered anti-bildungsroman (or rather, the subversion of the genre where the coming of age is paired with rejection or reform of society as opposed to integration), but it’s not particularly novel as cyberpunk itself. I think it’s plenty good enough at what it does do that I don’t care about a nitpick like that but would be a lot harsher if future entries don’t push on that envelope given the genre’s political roots and the state of the world. The same old warnings don’t cut it so the genre itself must respond. Edgerunners gets credit for portraying the horrible City in all its visceral terror to maybe jolt people awake a bit, in which case it’s still done more than Ghost in the Shell has in recent times lol
>>281871944that's the quirk i'm talking about, his humanity is particularly high for his class because of the relatively stable and loving upbringing his mother gave him>>281871851>Once you start killing for a job its hard to come back to a normal, quiet life.my problem is he never even makes an attempt, i could understand if he had tried and failed and tried and failed to go back to a normal life, but he just goes full tilt and never looks back.>>281871643>>281871954>>281871972just admit you enjoy slop and don't care about deeper meaning, it's okay, i'll think you're retarded but there's plenty of people you can talk to who will agree with you
>>281870749>he's so retardedliterally me
Cyberpunk (the genre) has been retarded and incestuous for like 30 years at this point.
>>281870749>>stable-ish upbringing and loving motheryou are an idealist just like herI don't know if you are the same anon baiting once again but anyway I love to see edgerunners on the catalog.
>>281872511i can appreciate it as a subversion of the typical shonen power fantasy crap, because the MC is very naive and fallible and ends up paying the price for it, but that only really happens in the last two or three episodes. if that's its goal then why does it spend most of the series tacitly glorifying his lifestyle? you have to pick a lane, you can't glorify a dangerous, reckless lifestyle then at the last second decide to metaphorically wave your finger and say "now kids, that was all for nothing, so don't do that"
>>281872541Your post is bookended by “he’s so retarded…dumbfuck” and you expect anyone to take you as either a trolling cunt or an actual 12 year old raging because you got a textbook tragedy instead of a power fantasy? You type like shit, your opinions are shit.
>>281872797i hope it makes you mad that you have to talk to people who aren't as intelligent as you think you are
>>281872743How can it be anything other than glorious in the bright moments of victory between fear, pain, rage and death? Do you want some fairy tale that will obfuscate the allure of burning away your life that way? He’s punished heavily every step of the way, you can’t mistake that the show tells you clearly how bad his decisions are. >>281872840It makes me laugh because I realize I’m way more intelligent than I give myself credit for and losers are way dumber than I charitably tend to give you credit for
>>281872941>Do you want some fairy tale that will obfuscate the allure of burning away your life that way?that's what this show does, by and large, so no
>>281870749Probably he got mad from overusing implants. Did you miss the point where they said about technopsychosis?
>>281873192he begins overdoing it with his implants after watching his friend and mentor die from cyberpsychosis, like he learned nothing and maine died in vain
>>281873052Except it doesn’t. From the very first scene it associates that path with madness and ruin. David is never able to protect what he claims for himself, no matter what he sacrifices for strength. Others walking the path ahead of him provide constant reminders of the terminal result and the suffering that will be experienced along the way. >>281873230Correct, his trauma was too great for him to break free from that cycle. You aren’t making the same mistake, are you?
>>281870860He never really got over his mom and Maine dying, and couldn't believe in his own life's value, despite Lucy trying to get through to him. One Anon also theorized that his secret, unspoken wish from the start was to go out in a blaze of glory like his snuff videos, but he couldn't exactly say that out loud to the people who cared about him.>>281872743It wasn't last-second. Pilar dies in ep 4, JK gives him the starkest warning in ep 5, Maine dies in ep 6, and then it's post-timeskip time.
>>281873274is there really no point where he could've backed off or settled for a quieter life? am i just hallucinating these imaginary quitting points that never could've actually worked or happened?
>>281873364Yes, you are making up headcanon because you’re a childish person who can’t engage with stories on their own terms rather than comparing them to your irrelevant expectations. Again, it’d really make sense if you’re actually 12 and complaining like this but if you’re any older….Yikes >>281873361The very first scene is one of the cyberpsycho recordings lol
>>281873469>Yes, you are making up headcanonnot as bad or childishly as some people who've watched the show have. people insist david and rebecca survive while i thought their deaths were thematically appropriate and fitting, given how they act in the show.>rather than comparing them to your irrelevant expectationsthe issue here is my "irrelevant expectations" are for cyberpunk as a genre, not this particular universe, and i'm getting them mixed up
>>281873584Now you’ve got some strawman about what some hypothetical people say about the show lolI don’t think you understand the cyberpunk genre in the slightest either
>>281873628then explain what you think i'm missing, i'm trying to be candid about how i may not be getting it and more understanding but you're still acting like an little elitist faggot
>>281873361>JK gives him the starkest warning in ep 5last time I rewatched I came to the conclusion that JK literally rushes Davids' simptoms and makes the cyberpsycosis inevitable, he fucks his brain and that bit that made him special
>>281873763Someone theorized that the EMP might've been what triggered Maine's cyberpsychosis too.
>>281873740You started by raging at the show as if your opinion is the elite standard to which it should be held and now you want to call me elitist for knocking you down a peg? Gee I wonder if David ever discussed what edgerunners mean to him and if anyone provided a different take on them that foreshadows the entire tragedy.
>>281873763he definitely did something bad, in ep 8 where he murders that woman who reminds him of his mother, he sees the guns coming out of their faces and arms like he does in the BD.>>281873936having mild opinions isn't how you get people to respond to your threads
>>281873969So you pretend to be retarded for attentionFine I will stick to just insulting you shitposting tourist scumKill yourself and never come back to this board
>>281870788David was said to have an astoudingly high level of humanity and thus resistance to cyberpsychosis so he was able to chrome out to degrees otherwise unheard of. The equivalence of having the perfect body genetics for putting on shitloads of muscle but just using roids anyway.
>>281873839making senseJimmy Kurosaki mad motherfuker
>>281874016i understand, you're a contrarian. if i had made this thread about how edgerunners was great and i really enjoyed what it was saying in every way you still would've called me a retard because that's the opposing opinion. might wanna re-evaluate that opinion, buddy
>>281870749manlets never learn
>>281870749This is why no one will remember your name.
>>281875021>it's more important for literal multitudes of strangers to know your name without knowing even the first thing about your true nature as a person than it is to be there and support your friends and loved onesretard, go outside. which kind of these two types of life do most people lead, and why is that the default?
>>281870749>then he just decides he has to be scarface and climb the rungs of society??? doing all these jobs and roiding the hell out despite very clearly seeing what happens when you don't take your health seriously??? he gives up on trying to emotionally connect and understand people, which was his one actual unique trait??? AND THEN IT ENDS?????The complaint is he acts irrationally like 99% of humans do?
>>281871493It does not automatically follow that someone having the means or ability to do something means they will actually do some beneficial action, or not do/avoid some harmful action. It's such a core facet of life and the human experience that I honestly don't understand why you'd even question it.
>>281872541>my problem is he never even makes an attempt, i could understand if he had tried and failed and tried and failed to go back to a normal life, but he just goes full tilt and never looks back.NTA, but in real life do you not know of(not necessarily personally) people who go down a 'wrong path' and never look back until they're dead or too deep into it?Do you know what it takes as a human to detach yourself from your own rationalizations and environment and even consciously realize that? And then even of the set of people who to conciously realize that to some extent, to actually quite literally take that idea from just something you understand on a mental level and manifest it physically into life changing action?Smart people will pay tens of thousands of dollars for professional help just to get them to the realization part. And even then the chances that someone can physically do what is needed to change their path in life are far from trivial.
>>281875883>>281876050>>281875792i'm questioning it within the confines of the show's logic and its world, which i think is inconsistent. i understand how it works in the real world, i'm saying in this particular anime the choices he makes are dumb.
>>281870749man, i dont know exactly how to tell you, but series dont want you to identify with the M, the MC can be a flawled person, also, series dont have the duty to teach you lessons or to be an example, so please, stop being a fucking retard and grow the fuck up. You fucking idiot.
>>281872541>my problem is he never even makes an attemptso, you have a lot of problems with villains, maybe the audiovisual media is not your media and you should stick to books, that media can give you the depth you need, maybe you should avoid anime and cartoons, you fucking moron
>>281872541shut the fuck up, moralfag
>>281870749>I'm different. I'm a special little guyExcept he's not he was just a big fish in a small pond
You have to be White or japanese to get it, sorry OP.
Why does anyone come here anymore?
>>281870749David is a weird torture porn gooner who grew up without a dad in a dystopian hell city. On top of that he gets further traumatized through the show without any of it ever getting properly addressed. You can't fault him for acting a little strangely and that's the point, everyone in Night city is so fucked up it's not even possible for them to have a happy ending no matter what they achieve, they're missing the basic program in their brain for it because they live in society that has distorted them on a spiritual level. If they're ambitious reckless youngsters like David they won't stop when they already have everything they need because they don't know what that is like or how to live like that. For someone who has made being hungry their identity, being full will just feel empty, making them go in for more. On top of that David's only father figure was Maine who showed no signs of ever even considering stopping.David's whole story is pointless, self-destructive and degenerate because he's a Night city resident with broken mind and a broken soul. The only ending he really understands is dying in a blaze of glory and becoming a legend of the city, and it probably didn't help that he spent his youth gooning to memory recordings of of people doing exactly that.
>>281877455i get it now. damn. dunno what my problem is. cyberpunk as a genre was never really high literature but i think i started huffing the psuedointellectual farts a little too hard there and got mad this wasn't like ghost in the shell or something.
he fucked a white bitch that's all that matters
