i think it's because covid brought in a lot of people who didn't spend a lot of time on the internet and therefore were less likely to have been exposed to stuff like thatyeah people were complaining about "problematic" things before that but now you have women who are new to certain online communities and are just appaled at basically everything that those communities enjoy, especially communities centered around anime and manga
