Why did they heavily change Tokyo Mew Mew? I don't get it because it wasn't even that edgy in Japanese and they only dubbed the first 26 episodes, which were comparatively tamer than the other 26 episodes. They changed character personalities as well

What would the rest of One Piece be like if it was still being dubbed by 4kids?
>>
>>281872671
I'd like to know why 4Kids heavily censored anime back then
>>
>>281872671
It's 4Kids. They never made sense, they thought kids were retards and wouldn't understand the Japanese stuff. Not to mention the censorship of violence and anything related to it.
Bizarre their Shaman King dub left a lot of religious and spiritual stuff though. Maybe they gave up on trying to change anything because it would've made less sense.
>>
They also heavily changed what they did of Doremi, which is aimed at an even younger audience than Tokyo Mew Mew.
>>
4Kids fucking redubbed and heavily rewrote Winx Club of all things even though that already had an accurate English dub airing in Europe at the time.

It's just autistic "we can improve on foreign stuff" faggotry.
>>
So how did the Ultimate Muscle dub end up being one of their better dubs? As far as I can tell, it ended up being one of their more faithful and accurate dubs
>>
>>281872671
Also, why did they have episode 12 be the very first episode in the Tokyo Mew Mew dub? That didn't make any sense
>>
They had to justify their own existence by finding things to change, no matter how minor they may be.
>>
>>281872671
So what 4Kids dubs were atleast tolerable? The only ones I can think of are Ultimate Muscle, Shaman King, Pokemon, and maybe Yu-Gi-Oh!
>>
>>281872671
So why did a lot of kids enjoy 4Kids dubs?
>>
>>281875156
Higher tolerance for slop. Kids enjoyed some really fucking bad western cartoons too.

I think a more interesting question that this could extend from would be - in this modern era, would 4Kids shift to being politically correct? Or would they be their old selves from the 2000s?
>>
>>281872671
Why are you autistic
>>
>>281873098
I think someone at 4kids just genuinely liked Shaman King. It kept a lot of the violence, and even some of the blood. They even said the word "jackass" in one episode, lmao.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ShamanKing/comments/1c56kpn/remember_that_the_2001_dub_said_jackass_in_this/

(Only clip I could find.)
>>
>>281872671
Why did 4Kids make Tokyo Mew Mew more fast-paced? The original Japanese version was pretty slow-paced, while the dub was more fast-paced

and why did they make the girls meaner as well?
>>
>>281873031
They were making it for a global and usually younger audience.
>>
>>281872671
>I.t.t.: people who think they aren't still getting censorship in subtitles all the time today with regards to sensitive stuff down to simple stuff like translating “ビッチ” to “bitch” rather than “slut” because it's too “sensitive” and being able to get away with it because the Japanese word for “slut” sounds a lot like the English word “bitch”.
>>
>>281877135
I have no idea why zoomers think "jackass" is some kind of naughty word. It means donkey, in insult form it means "dumb as a donkey", and can be heard in tons of old cartoons, including Disney shorts and whatnot. It has absolutely nothing to do with "ass" being slang for butt.
>>
>>281877420
I think the example you gave is more shitty translators than anything malicious. Maybe I'm wrong though.
>>
>>281877420
>>281877469
That one's definitely just shitty translators. It's more common in scanlations than in professional subtitles too.
>>
>>281873098
Shaman King was aiming for a slightly older demographic and usually aired at the end of the block. by then most kiddies are outside or playing video games, moron.
>>
>>281877453
I felt like there would be a post like this. The dubbers probably used your exact fucking argument to get that through, but you obviously understand it's considered a mild curse word. Stop being a jackass.
>>
at the end of the day only pokemon and ygo mattered and they made it more iconic accidentally
>>
>>281873565
You might be shocked to hear this but even dubs have different writers and directors

The fuck they didn't. Both franchises are way more popular in Japan than here.
>>
>>281877487
>>281877469
Nahh, it's definitely done on purpose. I refuse to believe the official translators for Assassination Classroom or Diabolik Lovers is that incompetent.

Just in general, swearwords are severely toned down, as are allusions to noncon or race. The Outbride translation even constantly replaces the word for “vagina” with some kind of euphemism like “down there” but that translation is extremely liberal and also omits so many plot details to begin with.
>>
>>281877955
"Bitch" generally means "slut" in Japanese. It's an English loan word that doesn't 1:1 translate back to its original language.

>I refuse to believe the official translators for Assassination Classroom or Diabolik Lovers is that incompetent.
You'd be surprised. Professional anime translators and especially manga translators are usually just translators that aren't good enough to get jobs at places where mistranslations lead to actual lawsuits and them potentially getting fired.

>>281878012
It comes from "bitch in heat" and used to have that meaning in English too, it's just so long ago nobody really remembers that any more.
>>
>>281877955
What word does that series use for vagina? Manko? Because I've seen before fan translations be liberal in the other direction, inserting profanity where it really doesn't fit. A notable example is the Voynich Hotel panel where the one girl is wearing a shirt, which the fan translation translates to "fuck me" when iirc what the shirt actually says is more like "open for business".
>>281878012
That's what he's saying. That ビッチ is translated to "bitch" instead of "slut" and that that's some kind of censorship.
>>
>>281878056
I mean in this particular instance translating it as "Sex on the slut" just kills the entire pun.
>>
>>281877407
Makes sense, though some of the edits weren't even because they were inappropriate. They made the girls in Tokyo Mew Mew mean and they made the pacing faster and considering there's a lot of slower shows aimed at kids, it's weird they made the pacing faster
>>
>>281877407
They were absolutely NOT making it for a "global" audience, their rewritten scripts had way more Americanisms in them than the original scripts had Japaneseisms, and were a lot more difficult for foreign dubbers to translate than the original Japanese would've been.
>>
>>281874074
Given how random the other two "new" scenes were, I assume all three of them were just scenes that got cut from the Japanese release and 4kids put them back in.
>>
>>281877597
Even the same dub can have VERY different teams. Compare the first half of the Shaman King dub to the second half. The first half is full of stilted dialog and is trying to take itself seriously-ish. Then the second half has the characters constantly bantering with each other like Ash and Misty in early 4kids Pokemon.
>>
>>281877420
It's not really censorship if nothing is removed.
>>
>>281872671
Is there a reason 4Kids aired the 12th episode of Tokyo Mew Mew as the 1st episode? This made no sense because it basically made the 12th episode non-canon and then the second episode went all the way back to the beginning
>>
>>281879212
No, they were newly animated scenes. They were later dubbed and aired as an "extended cut" on TV in Japan one single time (though I don't think any caps exist).
>>
>>281872671
Did 4Kids hate start because of the disaster that was the One Piece dub?
>>
>>281872671
Why was their Sonic X dub one of the most hated dubs of 4Kids?
>>
>>281880182
For me, it was the shitty music. Sonic X's Japanese OST definitely wasn't Adventure era Jun Senoe, but the English dub soundtrack was AWFUL. Funnily enough, I think it was the only major 4kids dub to not have a bunch of original vocal songs written for it, besides the intro. When Sonic thrives on cheesy vocal tracks.
>>
>>281880001
Started with Yugioh, which had a sizable western fanbase before the show got licensed.

>Why did they heavily change Tokyo Mew Mew? I don't get it because it wasn't even that edgy in Japanese
Tokyo Mew Mew wasn’t like the other babyslop Toei Mahou Shoujo like Sailor Moon or Precure, in that it was an actual shoujo meant for teenage girls. For example there’s a rapechad pretty boy constantly trying to rape the main protagonist Ichigo.

Hey Mew Mew anon, I can't comment on your other questions about 4Kids in general because who really knows why they did the shit they did, but I think I can answer this.

It was pretty common for 4Kids dubs, and sometimes other anime dubs at the time, to show a random episode from the middle of the series as like a "sneak preview." 4Kids Pokemon definitely did this, and though Cardcaptors wasn't a 4Kids dub, it did something similar. This is mostly likely because a lot of anime, especially a magical girl show like TMM, start pretty small with a limited cast and don't really present a complete picture of what the majority of the show will end up feeling like once the entire cast/plot is established. So picking an interesting episode from the middle to lead off with is like a way of saying "hey, this show gets good! we promise!" and maybe makes the early, smaller-scope episodes feel a little more interesting because you know from the preview what they're leading up to.

hope this helps!
>>
>>281872671
>>281881731
Also now that I think about it a little more-- I think there was something going on where 4Kids only purchased the rights to the first half of TMM and not the second. They were interested in doing the rest, but for some reason they couldn't get the rights and it never happened? That's probably an oversimplification, but as far as I'm aware it wasn't a censorship thing or done out of concerns of the content of later episodes or whatever; I think the delay was on the Japanese side.

it's possible they were hesitant to let them dub the rest because of how much the first half got censored, but that's just speculation on my part, and I can't guarantee the rest of my post is accurate either. I just know for sure that 4Kids did want to dub the whole series
>>
>>281872671
I think censored localizations of both anime and vidya are actually good if they’re censoring woke homofaggotry shit like the based old dubs of Sailor Moon and Cardcaptors did.

The problem is most modern localizations are done by trannylators these days and have spun the opposite direction, censoring anything that dares to be “un-inclusive” or shit on protected minorities.

Suffice to say I miss the old days, zoomers will never know how good we boomers used to have it with localizations.
>>
>>281873098
>>281877135
Shaman King had so many weird translation decisions for its English dub. Needless edits, like changing Manta's dictionary to a horror book (even though he's supposed to be a scaredy cat), to keeping Usui Horokeu's name, giving him the Americanized nickname of Trey Racer, and then going back and forth between them. Not to mention, "Lenny."

I assumed 4Kids had high hopes for the series early on, but when it became apparent this wasn't going to be the next Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh!, the higher-ups stopped paying attention, allowing the localizers to get more faithful and sneak more shit in.

>I'm from Georgia!

>>281881811
That makes sense. I think 4Kids really should've just aired episode 12 as a sneak preview rather than airing it as the very first episode, since it messed with the original series' continuity by doing so, especially with how in the dub, episode 12 became non-canon
