She's fairly proactive and tries to help even when she's in a limited support role right from the first episode.Van is fine for what he is, we know from his brother he's going to grow up into a proper rapechad but he was forced to fight, lost his mentor, and the one guy who could act as a reasonable replacement is too busy seething at him in impotent rage over Hitomi. I know with our modern standards Merle shouldn't be stuck waiting for so long but she's a good cat girl and I'm sure as Van matures he'll give his childhood friend the reward she deserves.
