I don’t watch a whole lot of anime these days, but is it just me, or has animation style and quality gone down in just the past decade?
I understand that it’s changed a lot from the 80’s and 90’s, but the past 10 years?

It's not just you, but you're still wrong. Technology continues to improve and make animation cheaper. That generally makes quality go up, but budgets and deadlines get tighter so some things suffer.
Basically you're forgetting just how poor a lot of old shows looked.
>>
Yes and no. New seasons of anything old always seem to have worse animation.

For example Dragon Ball Super vs Dragon Ball Z or One Punch Man (S1) vs One Punch Man (S2)

I gotcha. So basically this? >>281880342

Can't really compare big budget projects like dandy to normal seasonal shit. God I love dandy. Truly watanabes best work
>>
>>281880342
Making something cheaper =/= making it easier. You're overlooking the vital detail of the person drawing the picture being good at drawing. Twitter and COVID pushed Vietnamese outsourcing to an all-time high and staff communication, ironically, to an all-time low. Despite Nyugens being astronomically cheaper than Tanakas, quality and efficiency don't go up at all. You would have had a point if you posted this in 2015 but we are far past then.

Style is a very broad, complicated, and subjective topic, but on the topic of quality

There's also the recent boom of diluted startup studios to handle the endless flood of naroushit, but I don't know what exactly provoked that.

I didn’t know Dandy was high production but that makes sense. I never finished it, but I came back to it the other day and picked up where I left off. Great show.
BY THE WAY!! I had no idea, but apparently the creator is the same guy- was the main guy apparently behind Cowboy Bebop? That’s wild to me.

Bones is generally a pretty good studio whatever they're doing and Dandy was a big project that had like half the industry involved for different episodes
And really like 90% of anime has always been cheap crap but now there's 200 shows a year instead of 40 so there is more crap by raw volume
>>
>>281880675
200?? Man; when did that start?
>more crap by raw volume
Sad, but makes sense.
>>281880596
How much of anime these days is outsourced? I only want my anime from Japan.

Japan's been outsourcing animation work to Korea and China since the 70s
Drawing inbetween frames sucks a lot of man hours and they've always looked for ways to do it cheaper

No it doesn't you fucking retard. Technology has nothing to do with the quality of animation, animation depends entirely on the skill of the animator. The quality of animation went down dramatically specifically because it's cheaper to produce animation now with digital slop all around, and the required skill ceiling being much lower.
>>
>>281880750
There's too much anime per season for any one person to watch enough to give you a reliable estimate, but you'll be able to spot Twitter handles and non-Japanese names pretty easily in the opening credits. Also bear in mind that the animator being Japanese isn't enough to guarantee it'll be good.

Never heard of the 1st one. I’ll have to check both out. Thanks anon.

There is actually one small caveat to that post in that painting and photographing cels are way more expensive, time-consuming, and labor-intensive than digital editing despite being essentially the same skillset, so the amount of animation that could be finished (and mistakes that could be corrected) had a hard limit that they don't anymore, but of course the old way got a lot more efficient too with advancements in xeroxing, cameras, etc.

Ok are you done for today? See you tomorrow. HxH remake had the infinitely better Bisky (best character) so it's superior by default btw.

>sl*p
Learn to write a sentence without using a garbage buzzword the next time. There's 1000s of digital anime that look better than cel.

Honestly? It feels like WIT is the only studio willing to gamble their resources on projects that are less likely to be trend-chasing, to the point of inconveniencing shareholders.
>>
>>281881387
Extremely based. One of my favorite anime- or used to be (Seraph of the End) was animated by WIT. Thought they did a great job on it.
I think being afraid to take risks is a big problem across the board today. Movies, games, etc. That’s why you have the same handful of actors in every movie, and games that are only good if they’re indie.
>>
>>281881387
i like this remake a lot! it has my favourite animators from one-punch man season 1! after a long time i'm starting to relike anime

Can't help but laugh at the sakugatards at Xwitter hating on this show whining about resources being "wasted" on this show. They're kinda telling on themselves that they're not really sakuga fans but the usual hipster elitists with sakuga as a convenient cover.
