Pity Gege forgot about the very twist he gave it: sorcerers and curses living in that world which, without them, would be identical to ours. He managed to show that Fujiwara was not only the shrewd regent described in real documents, but also a talented general who formed a squad of powerful sorcerers; that life in the noble capital was influenced by curses and sorcerers. He could have added so much interesting stuff to make it more palatable to his Japanese countrymen. As for the fans oversea, it shouldn't have been his problem if some of them couldn't read/didn't have any patience, but you can be sure those obsessed enough with the story would have gotten into that alternate Japanese history without issue.
