Jiji is a bad character that has taken an exceptionally long time to become vaguely interesting. Okarun is an interesting character that has taken a lot of nerfing to become less interesting. That's the basic crux of the issue. People are attracted to the fact that Jiji is like Tatsu's pet project. He's a pretty inert character that Tatsu throws a bone at every once in a while to see if there's some angle for him to go. Usually that's EE, sometimes that's his insecurity with Momo, sometimes that's some weird flirtiness with Seiko. Meanwhile, people are loathe to admit that Okarun is just generally an interesting character who happens to be the MC. He's a depressed little nerd who is determined not to fuck up given his single opportunity in life to be happy and is beyond grateful for any new friend he can get. He's deeply interested in yokai and aliens, but even that comes from a place of deep seated loneliness and isolation. He's willing to let Momo lead in their romance because he's so inexperienced and anxious but still finds the backbone to make it known to her how much he values her. This is why the love triangle sucks shit. Jiji doesn't deserve a place next to Momo because he's just a tedious plastic dude who thinks masking up is how he'll get through to Momo when in reality the reader has to watch him realize his error in excruciating detail. Meanwhile, the character who seemingly deserves a chance to see what warmth and affection is keeps being separated from Momo for no other reason than giving the reader blue balls.
