We already had that time when VNs were prominent
Didn't work
VNs are not a good medium for a linear story

Anime/Manga adaptation always end up needing to cut a branching route, which often causes problems either by getting rid of critical info or causing a character to remain underdeveloped.
Thus, everyone goes "just read the VN"

In cases like Clannad, some characters were even cut entirely
