Why are depictions of Japanese characters being racist against foreigners so rare in Anime and Manga? There are far more scenes of foreigners being racist (especially against Japanese people) than of Japanese people being racist even though real Japanese people are notoriously xenophobic.

The same reason Americans don't display themselves as blatant psychopaths in their movies, even though they are.
>>281911800except when they do, like in Wolf of Wall Street and American Psycho and The Social Network and Ghostbusters 2
>>281911720>waaah people keep bullying me because of my blonde hair and blue eyesIt's that YEE YEE ass haircut lil bro
>>281911800Except they do, like all the time. Shitting on Americans as being racist belligerent morons is quite common in Hollywood.
>>281911720The Japanese are so racist against Koreans, that they simply pretend that Koreans don't exist so they almost never show up in Anime and Manga.
>>281912063That's what they are for the most part
>>281911720They simply don't talk about it.It's the norm to not mention negative or difficult parts of Japanese history or society.
>>281912245Pretty much, leaving aside racism, you rarely see Anime and Manga seriously tackle Japan's many problems. They try to avoid political stuff about Japan or anything that could be controversial.
>>281912721>Pretty much, leaving aside racism, you rarely see Anime and Manga seriously tackle Japan's many problemsLike what?
>>281911720Because thats how japanese racism works. It is less about being openly confrontational and more about being passive aggressive and pretending they don't exist. Foreigners are pretty rare in nip media in general. Unless an author wants to go out of their way to discuss racism, there really aren't many chances of including characters being racist in their stories. Closest you get is halfus being discriminated or tourists being retarded because those are more universal experiences for a japanese audience. Not to mention, if a japanese autor is including foreigners in their work, it is probably because they like them and want to highlight them. >>281912721Just because you know nothing about japanese politics, it doesn't mean anime and manga are not constantly referencing japanese politics.
>>281911720What happened with this shit series?I kinda dropped it after it felt it would go infinitely without MC and FMC getting together
>>281912163Do you seriously not know what went down with Hetalia or Hikaru no Go? Man, you’re such a clueless idiot.
>>281913466MC and FMC got together
>>281913512
>>281913363You almost never see any references to specific politicians or political parties in Anime and Manga, or anything about their policies. You also never see the Emperor.
>>281913889There is more to political commentary than newyorker cartoons. The diet, its members and their policies are constantly being referenced. Of course, they are not overtly criticized because that is not how japanese culture work. A japanese author is not going to just openly demonstrate discontent. Doing so is seen as immature, foreigner behavior. That doesn't mean they are not constantly including passive aggressive jabs at them in their works. Why do you think all leadership in japanese media is holistically depicted as some combination of spineless, ineffective and corrupt? What do you think the constant bootlicking and saving face they do is about? Those are references, even if you don't get them.
>>281913469What happened?
>>281912245>>281912721That's not true and you both sound like you haven't been watching a broad swath of anime
>>281914837Can you give a specific recent example of a covert jab at a politician?
>>281915285OK, what Anime do you recommend that addresses Japan's socio-political problems or the less savory aspects of their recent history?
>>281911720Because they look up to americans and only complain them about being loud and obnoxious (which is true).
>>281913014Shitty work culture Drinking and gambling problems
>>281915340The cat apocalypse anime had the government be completely ineffective during a global pandemic. Thats probably in reference to something, don't you think?
>>281916110That is not specific to Japanese politics nor does it refer to a specific Diet member/political topic within Japan, like the kind that would circulate through the news.
>>281915146I don't know about Hikaru no Go, but Hetalia's depiction of Korea (Hetalia is a series where countries are represented by characters) offended many Koreans because Korea was depicted as a pervert that molested Japan.
Becuase you only read manga intended for kids
>>281917419OK, care to give me some examples of Seinen series that depict Japanese people being racist?
>>281913469Elaborate on Hikaru no Go
>>281911720Ann from Persona 5 was a hafu and suffered discrimination and bullying for it.
>>281918639Persona 5 is one of the few pieces of Japanese media I can think of that feels like it genuinely criticizes Japanese society.
>>281918043It is rumored that the series was cancelled because one of the characters was based on a real-life Korean go player who sued. There is no actual evidence that this is true though.
>>281915356Princess Maison is a recent sorta-political manga, with a somewhat niche thesis about how being able to own your own house is a right of every individual, and one that is worth fighting and should be fought for in a system that is stacked against you. It's mainly from a feminist angle, since its main point revolves around how in Japan properties can only be realistically purchased as a couple, and for the average woman who goes through the JK -> OL -> housewife pipeline this puts them in a precarious living situation if they suffer a major relationship break-up at any point in the chain, where they are eternally renting/part-timing and effectively cannot save up the money to normally ever own a property. You could say that owning your own house isn't all that important in the grand scheme of things, but a big part of the manga is about how significant a property that is truly your own's is, especially if you yourself are living alone. The series occasionally shows how only outliers like the elderly or the wealthy often have the freedom of having their own properties that are truly theirs, with the implication that because of this they can maintain an inherent dignity in this small independence from others around them.

>>281919797That's nice and all, but the fact that your only example is an obscure Manga with no Anime adaptation kind of tells me that even in Seinen there aren't too many Anime that deal with Japanese socio-political issues.>>281918639>>281919131This is a better example.
>>281912163On the other hand, when Japanese people show up in Korean stuff its pretty funny, they take a break away from the plot just to have a filler episode about how the Japanese are evil and racist.
>>281920268>your only example is an obscure Manga with no Anime adaptation kind of tells me that even in Seinen there aren't too many Anime that deal with Japanese socio-political issues.I'm not the anon you were responding to, nor was I making a point that anime's a medium full of political commentary and screeds. Just wanted to bring up some other politically motivated manga/anime series that are a bit more specific than just a "bullying is wrong", "adults don't care about us teens" message.
>>281913469>Do you seriously not know what went down with Hetalia or Hikaru no Go? Man, you’re such a clueless idiot.Sure grandpa, it's time to change your diapers.
