You're right with the otaku references but it's not like any of them seem like something that would deter children, the core of the show remains girls singing and dancing and I don't feel like that's been sidelined at all for pandering to older audiences/otaku. Plus if (albeit, small) venues are being sold out for liveshows that probably means kids are enjoying the content at least. Unless those shows are being filled entirely with otaku I guess.
