>>281921807>How come some anonymous japanese woman has better sense of lore building, better character and story writing, better jokes, better concept and better art than 99% of the people working in the industry today? There is a massive lore book called the Adventure Bible that flushes out a lot of the stuff only touched upon by the main story and a large number of blog posts detailing what living life in that world is like. The answer to your question is "love", she loves the characters and world she created to the point of obsession and thankfully she's shared it with us.

>>281923096shut up hippie
>>281923114Hunting then for their thick hide, scales, organs, bones or for pest control all make more economic sense, even within drifting dragon's own lore on dragons; the meat of such a creature would be terrible to eat but the author's frame of reference is probably the Japanese taste for whale and its painfully obvious-- the first chapter they're all salivating over what would be a mountain of the worst possible meat and mentioning the hide as an afterthought when anyone with any sense about them would think of this the other way around
>>281922565>47% off on AmazonDon't tempt me, I'm broke
>>281923295Alligator is good meat, why would dragons be bad meat?
>>281922565I wanted to buy it too but the last time I checked it was very expensive
>>281923295Meat quality depends on what the thing eats, BUT we have solutions to all bad meat flavors/textures. Either via butchering techniques or herbs/spices that remove the gamey flavor. We even sorted out how to cook poisonous fish safely. I have no doubt once someone got their hands on dragon meat they'd sort out how to cook it right. Sure the first ones probably had a lot of waste. But once chefs got it is only a matter of time before it's peak cuisine. Even if you liken it to the worst predator meats out there - stuff like parasite infested bear meat or whatever, people still kill and cook bear. Dragon meat would likely be very close to snake, alligator, and bird meat - lots of lean meat, little fat, mostly "white" meat, not red meat. You'd have to avoid whatever crap makes them spew fire/acid, and avoid spoiling the meat with that. But overall I'd expect it to be generally bland and tough for most bits, with some fat collecting near the gut of the dragon. Stupid easy for humans to fix in other words. I'd also expect dragons nesting on gold to be FAR fattier then their active flying village toasting buddies.
>>281923489If dragons had to be based on Earth critters and rules, I'd wager they would be more similar to birds - you'd get "white" breast meat, and "dark" wing meat. Given dragon habits, the legs would probably be white since they don't walk around regularly. But that doesn't mean they aren't similar to gators and snakes, because both produce "white" meat. And being a white lean meat, humans totally know how to cook that shit dozens of very tasty ways. The dark wing meat would be the hardest to deal with, but we know how to make it tasty too. The fantasy bit that would be hard to deal with is whatever magic/fire production organs are in the dragon. This is the part we can't account for - like if a evil dragon has a corrupt mana core and that just makes all of it's meat taste rotten. Or it vomits acid and has a bile organ that easily ruptures ruining all the meat when you kill it. Crap like that would EASILY make dragon meat a right pain to deal with in a fantasy setting.
the dragons are whales, come on it's blatantly obvious the whole manga is just fantasy whaling

>>281921807>How come some anonymous japanese woman has better sense of lore building, better character and story writing, better jokes, better concept and better art than 99% of the people working in the industry today?I obviously can't speak for every anonymous Japanese woman, but Ryoko Kui has a strong appreciation for the aesthetic behind how people live, how things are made, and the mundanity that would still exist within fantasy. Before she did Dungeon Meshi she had already put together 3 short story anthologies that were all fantasy hypotheticals: Terrarium in Drawer, The Dragon's School is on Top of the Mountain, The Works of Ryoko Kui: Seven Little Sons of the Dragon, they're all great and you can read them on MangaDex. She's also a "huge casual" fan of PC western rpgs: >>281921934 >>281924276 She doesn't play a lot of games, but she consumes a ton of second-hand content: Dwarf Fortress, Wizardry, Baldur's Gate, Skyrim, most Japanese fans of fantasy exposure to the genre tend to begin and end with Dragon Quest or mmorpgs. At the start of the series Dungeon Meshi was a lot more referential to pop-media, but over time when she got comfortable, she started using more material from folklore.

>>281921807>How come some anonymous japanese woman has better sense of lore building, better character and story writing, better jokes, better concept and better art than 99% of the people working in the industry today?Because the story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Guts and One Piece, and even Inuyasha, are trash because they don't end, they don't try to resolve anything, they just keep the treadmill going. DBZ and Detective Conan, ends things, even if they pick it up again later with the same characters, at least the previous story is over. And much of the humour is truth that people don't get along with people, at best they sort of hang around with each other and don't really know them.

>>281929144> most perfect ending possibleEh.. I DO think the ending as a whole is great but its also a bit rushed IMO. I would've really appreciated a bit of a longer epilogue so that Senshi/Chil could get more closure, rather than the overt focus on Laios and Marcille (and Izu, to a lesser extent) Though I do definitely appreciate that the adventurers bible had a few little extra comics dealing with stuff like Shuro's proposal to Falin, Mithrun deciding on his next course of work, and Laios/Kabru dealing with the political aftermath of the ending.
No real progress on my end, I've been stuck in a rut trying to get her kit to be both fun and unique so I've been switching to the hero version of Leed to at least keep working, but now I have the same problem there now too. It will still happen, but it's gone from snail's pace to glacial pace.

>>281921807I'm not going to pretend to have in-depth knowledge about the Japanese entertainment industry, but I assume it's because manga as a whole tends to be a more individualistic meritocracy. As an infrastructure, it's more supportive of independent creators. Publishers aren't out there hiring teams of writers, they're looking for submissions from individuals that they judge might be popular. Manga isn't developed by a boardroom and test audiences, it's written and drawn by a single creator with input and advice from an editor or two. In short, in the west you need to play the game with connections and social politics to get hired like any other job in a supporting role in a creative project in the hopes that you might some day work your way up to calling some of the shots. In the Japanese manga industry it seems like you just need a quality work and a bit of luck to get it the shot to speak for itself. Maybe some connections to really get a submission in the right hands. Of course there are exceptions on both sides, but in the west it just seems a lot harder to get yourself exposure as an individual without working your way up the corporate ladder first.

Though I think it's really there as a symbol of corruption and dark decay. It's a pity it's not translated, since as while homo is as much not my cup of tee as anyone's, this king does look like interesting character.Seems he's struggling with being consumed by gay hornyness possibly, not being able to get it up to impregnate the queen and get a heir, which causes the kingdom to go to shit, then later his pretty boy son which he adored gets gruesomely killed, and still seeing his corpse causes him to get gay aroused. That guy must suffer like hell. He's not portrayed like a wimp, effeminate or anything, seems he's just a crushed unhappy dude. >>281945125>He's not portrayed like a wimp, effeminate or anything, seems he's just a crushed unhappy dude.I forgot to say, a crushed dude that may have fucked young boys straight after seeing his dead son's body, BUT then he does a Theoden, grabs a sword and fights the dark army or whatever the enemy is.
>>281921807Unironically japanese women are the best mangaka and this comes from a chudEverytime I like a manga the mangaka is an autistic japanese woman, they can write>interesting and cool male charactets>no woke agenda (at least not too preachy like most westoid shows)>not fraid to be a little politically incorrect sometimes>mc is never a beta cuck (when the mangaka is a male the mc is ALWAYS a beta cuck)>the plot is always good or interesting because she's very autistic about some topic most women don't care about, like rts games, old history, retro d&d games, classic western fantasy, etc
>>281944504This is based as fuck

>>281922171>>281936252>>281937684>>281938835I was tricked into reading Mamono by seeing this stupid deer storytimed on the Catalog. She's been the highlight so far, but goddamn the manga's got some major plot and art consistency issues. The premise is very solid while still being very "classic fantasy", so it's a shame to see it get fumbled like this.
>>281931671Senshi's story was already wrapped up. Chilchuck also didn't have anything that would require more closure.
>>281924398Probably my favorite of the new "dark fantasy" crop so far. Not really sure why it hasn't caught on as opposed to Centuria, which while fun in its own way is much more battle shonen/Chainsawman(?) than fantasy.
>>281948930
>>281949037>is much more battle shonenCould be that very thing that is the reason. Those things are popular, more catchy to lots of folks apparently.
>>281949037>Not really sure why it hasn't caught on
>>281949272But that is the result, not the cause.Popular slop gets translations no problem.Bush girls erotica with buff dad hero for discerning intelectual audience = no scanlations.

>>281947082Should have been the MC
>>281922171I recommend Bride of Barbaroi on top of these. It's one of those series that starts okay but after the 2nd volume it gets way better because the author nails down the direction their world building will take.
>>281921807>How come some anonymous japanese woman has better sense of lore building, better character and story writing, better jokes, better concept and better art than 99% of the people working in the industry today? What's funny is that drawing manga was initially her side gig and her main job was fashion design or something. So she was basically just some random nerd obasan who decided to write a manga and somehow effortmaxxed it because she's Japanese.
>>281953712That happens quite a lot of time to authors you know. This isn't something you should ever focus on primarily, until you make it.
>>281949732It isn't popular because it's badThe other guy just posted only sex scenes because the manga is bad
>>281955946I'm that guy and and I posted those because /a/ is a horny shithole, whether unironically or ironically..
>>281948934>>281948934IMO we should’ve seen Senshi’s emotional reaction to the dungeon being destroyed/him pondering what to do with his life now. As it is we only really get a bit of that through his diary entries which were extra materials.> Chilchuck didn’t have anything that required more closureWe literally never even see him TRY to reconnect with his estranged wife, which was one of the biggest conflicts in his backstory, and an unresolved part of his ‘I don’t like sharing my emotions if I don’t have to’ character arc.
>>281929097Just gonna think about marrying her for a while
>>281956588Senshi said he wanted to be alone and self sufficient. He was always a hobo and his emotional journey ended with the hippogriff. It would have been nice to see Chilchuck's wife but we didn't need to see her to complete that arc. He learned to share things about himself and promised to show Marcille his family, and then we see them meet. That's what shows this growth. Showing his wife would have just been fanservice.
>>281957374> he wanted to be alone and self sufficient. There's obviously much more to his character than that and his backstory made it pretty clear that he was at least in part staying in the dungeon out of guilt/inability to leave the last connection he had to his old 'family' of mining dudes. The dungeon meant a lot to him by the time it was destroyed and yet he didn't really get time in the main story to focus on it/process its loss and what that means for his life now.> we didn't need to see her to complete that arc.We didn't NEED to, but it was still something big that was left hanging. Considering we got extra's about things/characters that were comparatively less important, its pretty weird that we never saw Chils wife/his attempt at reconciliation. > promised to show Marcille his family, and then we see them meet. They only met the daughters, even though the mother was apparently staying with one of the daughters and she mustve known about the meeting. Its like she was skipped over.
>>281922565>>281928807I'm not upset with having bought the volumes individually as they came out, but I am kind of mad about how the Adventure Bible got an updated version that came out after the series was done since I had bought the original version. The updated one has even more side stories and interactions that conclude many of the little side interactions like Falin's answer to Shuro's proposal and other small details.I hope season 2 finds a way to incorporate a lot of those.
>>281921934Is she working on any new projects?
>>281929097> red dead redemption 2Beyond fucking based
>>281922565Bought it last month for $100, shit is really nice
>>281929231>AstarionEvery time
>>281958978Nothing at this point, I think in some previous interview she said she wasn't sure what she was going to do after this. Might go back to doing more anthologies/oneshots, or start planning another long-form manga. As things are, I assume she's still going to be involved in making advertisement visuals/extras and other shit for season 2 of the anime, so maybe she's going to wait until thats over before starting a new big project.
>>281958117Considering S1 didn't even include much of the volume tidbits, I doubt S2 will have the time to include the extra epilogue stories. MAYBE the vol 14 extra since it does feel like the actual end of the story, but I wouldn't be holding my breath.
>>281929150>>281929231>"the very popular" Astarion is by far the smallest, down in a corner, in the back, and is basically just a copy of his cover art posealways amusingeven the adoring fan is drawn with more care
>>281930338Sera's design translates to 2D much better than 3D, she can be cute in a scrappy messy kind of way, not wholly unlike Fleki.
>>281931200Magus of the Library is underrated, I'd argue that it has more solid world building than around half that list.
>>281959585I hope it does. Do they have fewer chapters to work with for the rest of the adaptation than the first half? A lot of those later scenes will likely happen much quicker in animation.
I'm glad that KUI absolutely hate her American Anime convetion meet up. It should further reinforce her to not look foward to their opinion.
>>281924398I'm a bit conflicted with this manga because I love the setting but I can't helping with the yanking feeling that the editor is fucking over with the pacing of the manga because it feels like story just skip some in between plot or explanation for some purpose. It makes the manga feel slow while and incomplete at the same time??
>>281930338>>281959645Sera Grew on me. Would shave name in again.
>>281922565oh i want this
>>281959830I think its slightly fewer chapters, S1 ended almost perfectly in the middle of the story. Though I think some of the later chapters in the manga had a higher page count, so who knows, maybe it balances out. I only hope that there'll be less 3 chapter episodes than S1 had, at that point the story starts getting too rushed. I'd happily give up extra chapter stuff if it meant the main story scenes got actual time to breathe.
i really love dm but i couldn't care less about turn based rpgs, sorry bros
>>281923295You know, the weird thing is that Japanese people don’t care about whale meat. I live in Japan and the vast majority of people have never eaten whale nor have any interest in it. I see whale meat in the supermarkets in small amounts maybe twice per year and despite being such a rare sight people don’t seem to give any care about it. I have my theory for why Japan is refuses to stop hunting. Also if you want to see countries who really love whale look up Norway, they hunt more whales than Japan despite having a fraction of the population.
>>281960512Hopefully they make the finale a movie. It did feel like an epic film.

>>281962327Blog hasn't updated since june....
>>281959767Sometimes I think that plays against it. Sometimes it really like the author is giving more atention to the worldbuilding than the story. I mean, the story is still cool but worldbuilding-centered fantasy is hard to sell. Very nerdy stuff

>>281962472It's not something stated in article but from many attendees that went to the event. I was there during her book signing at BookOff and Anime expo event in America. She didn't look very happy at the AX panel. Apparently a blogger told her that a bunch of people who attended her Bookoff signing event cheated the lines and sold off most of her signed book/arts on ebay and it bumped her out. Which was true because there were a lot of complain on the local bookoff IG page after the event.

>>281934738With how good social media it is these day it is way easier to get your manga spread out and have someone read it rather than throw out by editor if they don't like it
>>281967157> i can´t tell if some features just look better in 2D or if it´s just a favorable drawing....Its also absolutely an issue of the skills of the people making the character models, but 2D is generally more forgiving in regards to stylized and unique facial features. Especially in the case where you don't have to worry about small details like weird skin textures or how the lighting might affect someones looks and things like that.
