Depending on how long the manga still has, new characters could easily be introduced in the new school if necessary. So what they do is simple. Ichi or Yamada's new school gets burned down before they start attending. Quite literally, the reason either comical or serious it doesn't matter. The fun part is that the other's school is a new building with a detached old school building that's still in good shape and relatively well maintained, now designated as a temporary location (this never gets resolved btw) and place to stay for the one who's school got burned down. Now the two can meet up in secret during lunch, perhaps at a new spot they discover by chance, especially if one's school is gender locked, making the "taboo" of interacting with the other all that more interesting, especially if they introduce more sheltered characters. It practically writes itself. Why push this separation and struggle narrative? What fun is that? Imagine what fun times they could have together this way. The two schools could even host various competitions and programs together, maybe have class exchanges for the limited facilities one has and so on.
