The most serious reply I can muster is that the solitude in his childhood made him incapable of processing affection towards others, the manga spells it out on one occasion when he comes back to the gym after a match, the whole neighborhood is there to cheer him on and he just runs away to the attic and cries. There was definitely some tension with Yoko, but it doesn't feel like it ever came anywhere close to his passion for boxing.
