Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the thirty-third volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is 境界のRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>281871557

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
>>
Original title is こっくりさん. This is left untranslated and will be explained in the manga.

March 9th, 2016. Author's note:
"Q: Please tell us if there are any particular “obsessions” you have that are not understood by others!
A: I can’t listen to music with earbuds or headphones."

Well, here's the explanation as promised. Obviously, the original manga panel did not refer to Ouija (which is apparently trademarked) but covered what it is. Furinkan also has a note regarding it: "Kokkuri-san (コックリさん) is a Japanese styled version of the European/American concept of "table-turning" which eventually evolved into Ouija, a method of using an object that moves around a board to spell messages supposedly from the afterlife. The Japanese tradition was introduced via an American sailor in the 1880s and rather than a ghostly presence the Japanese believe it is the spirit of a fox (きつね/kitsune) that communicates with them players of the game. Jiro Tsunoda's 1973 manga Ushiro no Hyakutaro (うしろの百太郎) also popularized the game."

I found Wikipedia's note regarding the name interesting enough to post as well: "The name kokkuri is an onomatopoeia meaning "to nod up and down", and refers to the movement of the actual kokkuri mechanism. The kanji used to write the word is an ateji, although its characters reflect the popular belief that the movement of the mechanism is caused by supernatural agents (ko 狐, kitsune; ku 狗, dog/tengu; ri 狸, tanuki)."
>>
>>281982526
Spooky. The No and Yes were redrawn for whatever reason. I googled and it does seem like this depiction of it is pretty standard, including the torii (shrine gate) in the middle.
>>
>>281982607
In an interview in 2018 about Rin-ne, Rumiko Takahashi went over a lot of the characters. In regards to Rinne's mom, she said the following:

"The background for this character also was difficult to figure out, and I couldn’t show her for some time. I was thinking about a lot of options– a human, a shinigami, even an angel... but at the end I realized: “That’s right, this is a story about reincarnation!” And I created the idea."

Recap.
>>
>>281982742
Oh no! Poor babies. And yes, each movement is one character in the original panel.

>>
>>281983026
Mistranslation here. I guess the person translating this one didn't do the previous volume or just screwed up. Rinne said "十数年間" which means "more than a decade", which is true. But decadeS is inaccurate as it has not been twenty years (since Rinne is not more than twenty years old).
>>
>>281983096
The last panel stuck with me. I find it very funny.
>>
>>281983128
End of chapter. Tsubasa's line seems accurate enough as he said 母上も相当なアレだな。 which means "The mother is that kind of thing." or something. アレだな being an incredibly vague turn of phrase. Sakura said "過保護かも" or "Overprotective, maybe". 過保護 appears to also mean "excessive care", so yeah, helicopter parent is appropriate. Honestly, probably didn't need to note this, but I was curious.
>>
The book was not redrawn here or for the volume cover.

Furinkan notes that: "Kyokai no RINNE did not run in Shonen Sunday 2016 vol. 17 the following week." so that's why the date is going to skip.

>I was thinking about a lot of options– a human, a shinigami, even an angel...

further confirmation that angels exist in this setting, but still unclear if the ones with the little wings are the same as the one that was in that lake in hell that cursed masato
imagine if rinne was half angel though...

The Japanese term for pop quiz does use a loan word, but only for the word test. 抜き打ちテスト (nukiuchi tesuto). It means surprise test. May as well post more notes from the 2018 interview while I still remember to. Here is what Rumiko said regarding Renge:

"At first, she appeared as an enemy. However, I realized that Renge had a very serious approach, and that she was eager to cooperate at any time. She didn’t necessarily like doing bad deeds. I consider her the type of person who's able to bring out the best from the worst circumstances. Alternatively, I think she has a very strong ethics."

So, if you ever wonder why it is that Renge hasn't seemed to try to kill anyone since her first appearance, it seems like that was her trying her best to be a proper damashigami. I imagine she has lost some interest in that given how Sabato pays her.
>>
>>281983724
Oh no.

脱出香 in the name of the tool here. Pretty sure we've seen it before, but my memory isn't the best.

This imagery is pretty great.
>>
>>281983724
Why does Renge keep going at the human high school?
>>
>>281983795
The reveal. And yes, Renge read the title aloud in English. The scan quality of the raws is really rough today so I can't really make out the Furigana, but I know the last one is フレンズ (furenzu). And yeah, it has said that this whole time.

Tamako wanted Rinne to live with her in the afterlife, but Rinne didn't want to. I had to double check why since I genuinely didn't really remember. It is because Rinne considers himself "a human being. ... sort of...". This stuff is covered in the initial setup chapters in Volume 1. Though we do find out later that Sabato is a big reason behind all the money struggles.

I just realized you asked why Renge keeps going. I uh, have no idea. I guess because she started and she's a serious person.
>>
>>281984132
Rumiko's note regarding Matsugo in the 2018 interview is honestly not very enlightening:

"I realized that Matsugo didn’t know how to set boundaries. I wanted to make something that dealt with Rinne’s past and someone who knew about Rinne from that time, and it turned out this way."
>>

I think we've gotten a flashback to Rinne's childhood with an amount of years before, but my memory isn't the best for these things. I'll be honest, I fully expect Rinne to live as long as a regular human being, but that might not be stated in the story.

Cats! I kind of want to visit a cat cafe, but I have two cats, so in some ways, it feels a bit silly. Original title was 猫カフェの怪 which does mean what it says here, カフ (kafe) being a loanword from café.

Poor girl. The word for company housing is 社宅て (shatakute). I wonder if Rumiko ever felt this way, since her family home was a doctor's office, she also could never have pets. Admittedly, she has never had a cat since then either, so maybe not.

She's pretty cute in that final panel. Also, "boss cat" was translated from ボス猫 (bosu neko), so loanword from English.

>>
>>281984992
Sakura seems to refer to Rokumon as "のわかる猫" or "a cat who understands" which I guess is covered by talking cat, but technically is more specific. Also, Rinne's line was "触れ合ってください" which appears to mean "Touch each other, please". I can see why VIZ made it something more natural sounding in English. I know I look up a lot of these things, but I will say I do not prefer very literal and stilted translation despite how it seems at times.

Tsubasa didn't seem too concerned regarding leading about Rinnes mom. Even for something acquainted with spirit I would imagine it warrant some shock. Pretty sad too

This tool is called 霊いぶり出し香 (rei iburi-dashi ka). Spiritual incense or Spirit Drawing Incense. I was trying to find the name of this, but the last couple of times, I feel they didn't even say it. This one comes up a lot. Anyway, speaking of shinigami tools, here's a bit from that same 2018 interview about them:

"[Q:] The battles between the spirits had a routine quality to them which made them fun to read. For example, there was the attack that consisted of hitting someone with the corner of a Bible. But, you could also convince a spirit with a monologue, or you could buy a color balloon tool that could be smashed against them to reveal their forms to the living. There was also the description of regular maintenance for scythes and the revolving lanterns which made us feel that it was our own ordinary life being projected like a film. Battles without magic or special techniques were also used and they were more solid and more easily connected by humor. Was there anything in particular that you realized about the battles? Also, were there any special tools you liked?
Takahashi: Well, considering how you can only use the scythe for slicing, it would’ve been a pity if there weren’t any other tools. I had a lot of fun thinking about the goods for each chapter. My favorite was the “Tsukumogami Seal”. Apart from that, I think I used a lot of channeling dolls, but I had second thoughts about them. I realized that if I used them too often, the chapter would end too quickly, so I set a really high value for them."

The terms used here are 守護靈 (shugo rei) or guardian spirit (often localized to guardian angel since that is a familiar term in English) and 背後靈 (haigo rei). 背後靈 literally means "behind spirit" and refers to a spirit that follows someone. VIZ went with lingering spirit, which is a pragmatic translation since it does have a somewhat negative connotation without being as dramatic as "stalking spirit" or similar.

The concept of these 背後靈 seem to be pretty common in manga with a lot of character's aches and pains being attributed to them in supernatural stories. I don't think it is that common an idea in Western works, but I'm not exactly an expert.
>>
>>281985463
Hehehe.

End of chapter! Happy end! Well, for the cats and her at least. I would probably be a restless soul for a while in these circumstances too.

>>
Original title was 非凡な赤. Furinkan translated it as "Rare Red". Google suggests "extraordinary" for 非凡な. VIZ went with something amusingly mundane.

And yes, this cover and the next two pages were originally in full color.

April 6th, 2016. Author's note:
"Q: Spring is the season for new encounters. What encounter have you had recently that made you think, "That changed my life!"?
A: When I encountered a manga by Ryoichi Ikegami that I had read when I was young in Garo magazine."

If you want to hear more about this, check out My Sweet Sunday by Mitsuru Adachi and Rumiko Takahashi.
>>
>>281985647
The for rent sign was redrawn, though the Patisserie was in the original manga panel. The for rent sign had some more stuff written on it, but I guess it was too small to see or not very important since VIZ left it out. The scan quality of the raws this time isn't letting me get anything from it.
>>
>>281985698
Ah yes, the triple bedtime bow.
>>
>>281985463
Re-Kan (another manga about a girl that can see ghosts) had something like that with one of the girls grandmother being a spirit that stuck around her.
>>
>>281985714
Oh I should note she was a 守護靈 not a 背後靈
>>
>>281985713
More from that 2018 interview. This time regarding Ageha:

"I was nurturing her to become Sakura’s love rival, but it didn’t happen. Ageha’s totally dumb, but I also think she’s cute."
>>
>>281985775
I see they went with Shinigami Boys' Club again rather than Shinigami Boys' and Girls' Club despite the fact that Ageha is clearly in it. Anyway, the term in Japanese was 死神青年会 or Shinigami Youth Club. Maybe when I said it was 死神青年部 originally I was just wrong and copy and pasted something incorrect from Google.

The tart is named entirely in Katakana and consists entirely of English words. It is ベリーベリースカーレットリーパー (berīberīsukārettorīpā). It could also be translated as "Very Berry" or "Very Very", I guess. Also, the chef didn't even say free! Rinne said free. He reacts to his own words. I checked if this was mistranslated, but no. タダ (tada) means free and only Rinne said it and the narration specifically refers to that word.

I've actually had reaper somewhat "often" though always in small amounts for obvious reasons. Kind of funny that the second most spicy pepper is somewhat obscure because of the reaper's reputation. Admittedly, all this with chili basedbean paste would probably be insane even for me. This paste is called 豆板醤な in Japanese and is apparently called Doubanjiang in English, a loanword from Chinese. It is a Sichuan cuisine thing. It is great!

And yes, the original caption referred to the Grim Reaper as shinigami. I think given that VIZ kept the term shinigami in this series and it is pretty obvious in English, they should've kept it shinigami in this caption.

Original title is 心霊フィルム. Haunted Film is a reasonable translation since 心霊 basically means spirit, but it can also refer to psychic film or various other occult film things. フィルム(firumu) is a loanword from English. Furinkan went with Slasher Film, which is interesting.

Sakura Mamiya used the normal term localized as wandering spirit here, ie. 浮遊霊 (floating spirit). The tool here is ノイズ抽出ソフト (noizu chūshutsu sofuto). ノイズ being localized as interference this time rather than interference vibration is obviously a loanword from the English word "noise", but refers specifically to white noise or static. ソフト is also a loanword from the English word soft, but refers to software. But yeah, noise extraction software or interference extracting software are both fine translations. Noise is a bit less clear so I get why they did this.

Also, the original text said "PC" in English, so I would hope it didn't refer to transferring it into a monitor specifically.

It works like a charm. Also, by the way, the bag with the word rental and the clapperboard on the chapter cover had English on them even in the original panels.

Feel free to translate these signs if you're bored. VIZ should've done it, but I understand why they didn't.
>>
>>281987294
Oh no. Rokumon... Also, we got another recap in case you are confused. Also, great pun by VIZ's localization in the final caption here. It was not present in the original. It'll make more sense in one page.
>>
>>281987323
Per Furinkan: "[The spirit] resembles a koban coin which has the kanji 千万両 (sen man ryo) meaning "ten million ryo""

I thought maybe VIZ mistranslated, but I looked ahead and the coin actually only says 千両 on it, so Furinkan messed up. A maneki-neko (beckoning cat or lucky cat) usually holds a koban that says 千万両 on it, so I assume that's why Furinkan messed up.

>>281987469
If you google Kanedma or 金霊, you get an illustration that very much resembles this last panel here (presumably also being referenced by the cover of this chapter). It is the depiction of the kanedama from 今昔画図続百鬼 (Konjaku Gazu Zoku Hyakki) a compendium of various Japanese creatures including yokai, oni, ghosts, etc. published in 1779. It seems like these books (this is apparently the second of four volumes) is where the vast majority of these classic illustrations are from. I don't know why I've never bothered to learn where these were from.

I guess I'll post the Kanedama image after the dump. They're all on Wikipedia, it seems.

Oh, by the way, the back of the money spirit obviously is intended to look like the back of a koban (小判 in Japanese by the way). But there's a lot of variety in these, so I can't find one that quite matches up.

Presumably as a well-off kid, he wasn't as concerned about money as he is now. But he still was trying to save money and having money trouble with his dad, so it doesn't surprise me that these stories interested him.

In regards to Tsubasa, I realize I never posted what Rumiko Takahashi had to say about him on Twitter. On Twitter on November 26th, 2021, she said the following about him:

"I created Tsubasa to be a rival for Rinne. However, Rinne and Sakura were a hero and heroine who don't get waver easily. Rinne, of course, was somewhat troubled by Tsubasa's existence.
Tsubasa has a hard time with things and tends to find faults. Overall though he is a strong and positive boy."

She also said this regarding him in the 2018 interview:

"At the beginning, Tsubasa was meant to fill the position of Rinne’s rival. While drawing him, I thought he was a positive guy. So, even when I drew chapters where he suffered, I was aware that he’d always react optimistically."

So, yeah. He gets right back up again and goes for it. I mean, he is still chasing Sakura Mamiya after all.
>>
>>281987876
It calls to him.
>>
>>281987898
Google Lens failed me but I spent way too long sitting here staring at her book and trying stuff in the Katakana and Hiragana keyboard. I didn't know Japanese would switch between them like that. That was incredibly frustrating. The fact that most of these were loanwords did help though. It says ぺったんたのしいシールブック (pettan tanoshī shīrubukku) or Flat and Fun Sticker Book, as far as I can tell.
>>
>>281988136
Oh, the grilled chicken mentioned on the last page and pictured here is 焼き鳥 (yakitori). The dish is ネギマとつくね串 (negima and tsukune skewers). Negima meaning made with spring onions (and tuna? maybe not always) and tsukune being a type of Japanese chicken meatball.
>>

Honestly, it is a lot smarter. But he's got a point.

End of chapter. Sigh... Also, Furinkan notes that: "The drawing at the end says "mommy" (お母さん/okaasan) "by Ichigo"." Cute.

Per Furinkan: "This is a double issue meaning Shonen Sunday did not run the following week."

April 27th, 2016. Author's note:
"Q: May 5th is Children's Day. Is there anything that makes you feel like a child again?
A: Drawing."
>>

Fun difference in art style. Philosopher's stone here is referred to as 賢者の石 in Japanese, but it means the same thing and refers to the same thing.

I have a little note for Annette from that 2018 interview too:

"I considered introducing a character who was a teacher, but I couldn’t find the ideal occasion to do it. At last, I figured out her background as a witch descendant. I love drawing weird adult characters, so from that point of view, it was easy to draw Annette."

Well, there was also Suzuki. I assume he's doing fine.

Hydrogenated water in Japanese is 水素水 (suiso mizu) and seems to be a somewhat common thing in Japan (starting in the 60s) and makes up about 10% of the bottled water market (this is off some random website off Google, so take it with a grain of salt). Anyway, there's a health trend with it here too and it seems about as real as you'd expect it to be. Japan seems to have a lot of this sort of pseudoscience stuff going back decades.

Original title is カバ吉くん. Which does mean what you see here. Only reason I mention it is I think this is the second time Furinkan wrote さん instead of くん. They even translated the name as Mr. Kabakishi.

A: MD. (Mini disk player)."

I would hope zoo hippos are calmer and safer than wild ones. Of course, like all non-domesticated animals, they're never truly safe.
>>
>>281989918
I've mentioned this before, but Furinkan has a fairly comprehensive note so here you go:

"Kurosu calls Shoma "bocchama" (ぼっちゃま) which means "little sir" or "little master". It is the way a servant would refer to their master's very young child as opposed to "wakasama" (若様) or "wakadanna" (若旦那)."
>>
>>281986543
>Q: What do you think of if I ask you to compare yourself to food?
>A: Meat.
>>Aren't we all.
but what kind of meat?
>>
>>281989939
>>
>>281989951
In the 2018 interview, Rumiko says the following about Shoma:

"I had the idea of introducing a shinigami kid to the story. While drawing him, I realized that Shoma didn’t enjoy fighting against big enemies which involved too much effort to purify. So after that moment, it became easier to draw him. Also, drawing kids as shinigami was fun, too."

Assuming this wasn't mistranslated, I guess you can interpret it as "he doesn't enjoy it, but he does it anyway".
>>
>>281990028
That's pretty point blank.
>>
>>281990055
I assume she covered the expense of the item too, but maybe Rokumon is paying for it with his own meager savings. Also, I was a bit confused by "first grade human" for a second there. Given that she says 小学一年生 (shōgakuichinensei) which means 1st grade elementary school student, I maybe would've gone with "I'm a human first-grader".

Oh, I forgot to tell you guys the name of the blowdart tranquilizer in Japanese. It was 吹き矢の麻酔 (fukiya no masui). Means blowgun anesthesia, though I think they use the same word for that and tranquilizer. Spirit pepper was 霊的コショウ (reiteki koshō) or "spiritual pepper".
>>

>>
>>281990256
霊的木刀 (reiteki bokutō) in Japanese. Means spiritual wooden sword. Not the same word as 木剣 (bokken), but that's apparently because this one is a wooden version of a single-edged sword rather than a double-edged one.
>>
>>281990353
I don't believe we've seen Rinne use these before, but they're part of his arsenal and he knows how to budget for them. I can see why he might avoid them, they seem on the pricier side of things.

End of chapter. Pretty cute bunny. Also, Rokumon used the term: "金ツルがて" which appears to mean "gold vine". As in a source of money. It seems like it colloquially can refer to an easy mark or just any potential money source. I didn't find too much info about this one.

Yeah, 火花 means sparks, 花火 means fireworks. Furinkan may have gotten the two confused.

Oh, another excuse to post stuff from that 2018 interview. In that interview, Rumiko Takahashi said the following about Masato:

"I think that, for a character who appeared early on, it took him quite a long time to show up on the tankobon covers (laughs). I enjoyed drawing him, but I remember wondering and trying to understand if Masato could settle in the story at the end. Still, he was really easy to draw."
>>
>>281991465
Ah. Hence "return".
>>
>>281991481
In regards to Tamako, Rumiko Takahashi had this to say in that 2018 interview:

"Being in a guardian-like position for Rinne, I thought she’d be able to help with this or that."

Uh, that's all. But she did also talk about her on Twitter on January 29th, 2022 where she said:

"She has the role of the storyteller. I personally like her a lot. She is someone that doesn't worry about the little things. Only someone like Tamako could deal with a son like Sabato. However there may have been times when even she wanted to kick him up to the Wheel of Reincarnation and have him pass on. I was really happy with Satsuki Yukino's performance.

(Note: Satsuki Yukino is Tamako's voice in the Kyokai no Rinne anime. She is also Kagome in Inuyasha.)"

Oh, may as well post the bit about Rokumon from that 2018 interview here too:

"Being the opposite of the typical mascot characters up to this date, Rokumon was a gentle character who properly followed rules as a servant. He used honorific language and respected Rinne. He was indeed a very straightforward character who’d clearly refuse if he disliked something or would express himself if there was something that gave him trouble, so it was very funny to draw him."
>>
>>281991638
Little Rokumon may be real cute, but Big Rokumon can be very cute too.
>>
>>281991652
This was all in all a somewhat risky experiment.
>>
>>281991666
The attack is called 悪魔の落とし物 (akuma no otoshimono) in Japanese. 落とし物 does seem to mean lost items (more specifically dropped items?), but Google Translate suggested "Devil's Drop" as a translation which does seem fitting. I don't really know what Takahashi was going for with this one. I guess dropped items would've been a better localization.

I also saw a Wikipedia page on the Japanese site that used 落ちもの to refer to characters falling from the sky to start a story and it used Lum from Urusei Yatsura as the first example. Coincidence, surely.
>>
>>281991441

Both Masato and Sakura Mamiya specifically referred to the 土下座 (dogeza) here in the original Japanese. This is an incredibly deep bow to show deference and is part of traditional Japanese etiquette. It has been translated as prostration or kowtowing as it is done here.
>>
>>281991924
Attack was 地獄の業火 (jigoku no gōka). Which would be a bit redundant if translated directly as it seems to be "hell's hellfire". 業火 is a Buddhist term though, so in some ways, it is more like "karmic fire" based on what I am seeing.

End of chapter, end of volume. Well, seems the detergent was okay. I don't think it comes up again, but who knows?

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Rin-ne related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.

I would normally be returning next Saturday to dump Volume 34 of Rin-ne and the one-shot "She's Coming Tonight" but unfortunately, I have something that I have to do that day and as such, the dump is postponed until Sunday evening. So, reminder, no dump Saturday, the dump will happen on Sunday. I was confused by that too, but I assume the narrator is suggesting that Rinne struggling with the whistle is just because his haori sucks in comparison to most. Here's the original line:

"羽織の戻ろうとする力は小学校低学年程度なのだ。"

Ah yeah, based on Google Translate, this was a bit more clear in Japanese. Though wordy: "The force with which the haori tries to return to its original position is at the level of a child in the lower grades of elementary school."
>>
>>281992278
After repeating it in my head for 5 minutes I figured that returning haori with whistles was something they train young elementary schoolers to do. But then it wouldn't make sense as to why rinne was struggling.

Yeah the Japanese makes a lot more sense, the translation is crazy off.

I was trying to find to taste the legendary japanese curry and then stumbled upon a very enlightening video from NHK about it... turns out japanese curry is basically bechamel with onion, carrot and onions sauce. onions sauce is what gives that lovely glossy dark brown color There are some more ingredients but that's the base

I've had Japanese curry in town before and it was nice. Though I don't know how authentic it was. One nice thing about my city is a lot of food options, but I've never found like proper taiyaki or umeboshi onigiri.
>>
>>282010592

the place in a city near me is a half-ice cream/half-taiyaki place, you can also get ice cream with a waffle fish on top (no filling I think, just the waffle on top)
maybe there's a place like that by you but you overlooked it thinking it was just ice cream?
>>
>>282015559
Last time I had it, it was like gelatin with a waffle fish, but it didn't match the descriptions given in manga where it is paste and fully baked.

清白 is apparently an alternate rare way to write daikon radish, the other way is 蘿蔔 which is also said suzushiro
