I respect Mazinger, but it pretty much lacks a coherent plot, with modern adaptations and spinoffs needing to pretty much make shit up. Shin Mazinger was a fucking mess even if it was enjoyable.

Getter Robo actually follows a coherent series of events and the plot and characters grow more complex with time. Its got plenty of spinoffs with their own changes, but they all have a solid base in the original.

Disclaimer: I never read/watched Grendizer so my info is incomplete.

What really made Getter is the dynamic between Ryoma, Hayato and Musashi.

All of those series were conceived as anime and then had a manga version running at the same time. In Mazinger's case the manga started in October and the anime began airing in December while for Getter the manga running in Sunday started three days after the anime.
