>Not only introduces aliens in the second half of the story, but also reveals that the MC was an alien all along in the very same chapter

Yup, Toriyama is without a shadow of a doubt the GOAT.

I've been wondering how fans of the original Dragon Ball felt about that at the time: basically anyone born in the late 80s/ early 90s who grew up with Z just takes it as read that Goku is an alien, and it doesn't really seem like anything worth remarking on.
Imagine being someone slightly older, who had been following the character since he was a child in the original series.
I only ever watched about 20 episodes of DB, so I don't know if there were any hints that Toriyama had it planned out in advance.

I don't disagree but I still think Toriyama's strength is that he was always very straightforward. Modern authors have the problem of wanting to overexplain everything. They want the reader to care about the logic of things, Toriyama doesn't.

Goku could already transform into a giant ape, him being an alien isn’t a big deal and demons already existed in DB at that point. It’s not like valuing himself as a human was a big part of Goku’s character. The guy just loves to fight and wants to get stronger, him being an alien doesn’t change that

You are almost delusional enough to be a Hunterfag.

As someone who was reading the original manga as it was being released in Swedish and saw DBZ stuff on the English Cartoon Network page, I can say it was a surreal experience that made me think it was some kind of odd American cartoon version of Dragon Ball trying to be more like Marvel/DC comics. The focus on muscles and aliens felt very Superman-esque compared to the wacky fighting style and fanservice-focused parts I was familiar with at the time.

Latinos got DB before DBZ so it was a much bigger deal for them than for Americans.

Dragon Ball started as a borderline gag manga. Goku took a rabbit who turned people into carrots to the moon and left him there (where he later died when Roshi blew it up lol).

Toriyama never elaborated on Goku’s origins and why he could turn into a giant monkey. It allowed the reveal not to feel forced and it ultimately served as a bridge to take the story forward and beyond earth.

In most European countries, Dragon Ball was also aired before Dragon Ball Z.
But realistically both in Latin America and Europe the interest grew only thanks to Z, even if the original was aired before the ratings and social phenomena began to be shown only when the saga of the saiyans, Namek, etc. started to be transmitted...

Gag manga go by a different logic and DB was always a gag manga first and foremost, even when it went all fighty

I miss that kind of manga type really. I think the only thing that came close was early One Piece.

This is what I'm talking about: no one thinks about it, but it must have been weird as hell.

Anime exposition is SO FUCKING BAD! They need to show us not tell us things. I believe it's due to budget because showing means more animation.

Guarantee it was his editors choices.
Nobody gave a shit about Sand Land or Daima (already giga forgoten).

what dragon ball does well is pacing. it introduces a ludicrous plot point and then quickly moves onto the next action sequence. you simply don't have time to think how absurd it is because you are having fun
>>
>>282007871
It was the start of the nonsense, but it wasn't too bad at the time.
It got worse in the androids saga with the constant twists and all the plot contrivance.
