I don`t think that Scarlet is even going to be even the best anime original movie of the year to be honest.

I don`t really know why Hosoda is getting so much hype just because his name. ¿Because, he has the New Miyazaki status?. Katabuchi should have "the new Takahata" status too and compete in international non animation festivals too, "the Mourning children" looks that is going to be that good to me.

All the films original anime films that have aired in Anncecy have had good receptiong, nothing to Flow levels but they have been seen as positive(Chao even won jury prize), i don't know why Hosoda should compete to the oscars with a film with mixed reviews.

Also for all his name from a technical point of view Scarlet looks kinda bad, the storyboards are great but the CGI really affects the character acting.

Seriously 100 metres is pretty much an indie movie which use rotoscopia and is 100 times more expressive. Chao also seems to have really good character acting, creative, characters dessings and backgrounds.

So i don't get why Hosoda has to rely that much in cgi when smaller studios have been done better with less resources.

Pd: The most overlooked anime movie for the Oscars in recents years is "Totto-chan the little girl in the window" such a really great and unkwnown movie.
