>>282013781To me, it was that the abundance of themes surrounding socitial issues/norms where overshadowed by battle shonen tropes. It was inevitable that the plot would get lost (it always had too much going so I was braced for it) but I wasn't expecting full battle shonen which I suppose was foolish of me. The warning signs were always there.

Melon is a great character but most of his arc sucks. I think the start where it's like a detective plot and they're trying to figure out who he is and where he's going is the strongest narrative wise, everything after is just mediocre and that's WITH him carrying it on his back. I think the real crux of the problem was just Legosi getting pussified in the second half of the story which really reached fruition during the Melon arc. A story with an absent or terrible protagonist can't succeed. The weird buff Melon thing at the end is kind of just a cherry on top rather than the actual core issue

Just a fanged gazelle with a long tail. From a Beastars NPC's pov, Melon is a freak of nature that's genuinely bizarre and terrifying to look at with a too-wide mouth and fangs. The manga describes it perfectly - "born with the face of a scoundrel". Nonetheless, so long as his gazelle traits outweigh his leopard traits he can blend into polite society just fine, which makes investigating and finding him a huge pain in the ass.
