Shibuya Near Family chapter 140: Ikko is fussy about castles

>Box: Japanese Castle

>No, no, no. A castle like that will be stormed in an instant.
>You have to curve the stone walls to make them into musha-gaeshi, and you need to add firing holes to the walls of the watchtowers so that you can shoot through them.
A musha-gaeshi (武者返し, literally "warrior-repelling") is a type of curved wall found in Kumamoto Castle. They gradually become steeper as they rise, thus hypothetically presenting a deceptively difficult climb for attacking warriors — hence the name.

>Ikko-chan is way too strict about castle-building.

>How did this come about, you ask? Well...

>Ever since that day,
>there have been no young people in Shibuya.

>28 days earlier...
Presumably a reference to the seminal post-apocalyptic film 28 Days Later.

>(*Bweee bweee*)

>(*Tmp tmp tmp tmp*)

>*That* day
>arrived so suddenly.

>Watch Out For The Aged Day
Respect for the Aged Day (敬老の日, "keirou no hi") is a national holiday in Japan, held on the third day of September. Kumeta has changed the kanji 敬 ("kei", meaning "respect") to the kanji 警 (also "kei", in this case taken from the word for "vigilance, caution"), thus turning it into something like Watch Out For The Aged Day.

>I mean,
>that's way too many people to be showing respect for.

>You want to be polite to them, but they just keep *talking*.
>And it's nothing but stories from "the old days".

>They did things like that in the Showa era!?
>FOR REAL!?

>...I'm getting sick
>of constantly having to react like that.

>Since they talk so much,
>Left: Vigilance, with the radical for "speak" circled. Right: Respect.
>instead of respecting them, we have to *watch out* for them.
The kanji for "vigilance" mentioned above can be formed by putting the kanji for "respect" above the kanji for "speak" (言).

>For now, we'll have to avoid meeting elderly people if at all possible.
>Although there shouldn't be much reason to worry, since Shibuya is such a youthful city.

>This is bad!
>What's wrong?

>Shibuya's in trouble!

>Old people
>are swarming the streets!

>Why is this happening in the youthful city of Shibuya?
>Most likely, it's due to this.

>Someone's uploaded an incriminating video.

>Isn't that the mayor!?
>He's scattering something from a rooftop!

>It was coupons specifically aimed at old people.
>Coupon: Senior discount 90%

>I'm guessing it's because those seniors can vote in elections.
>Fishing for popularity... Why'd he have to go and stir the pot?

>S-still, we should be alright for the time being, as long as they stay away from the inner city.
>Look!

>They're already here, too!

>And now they're getting into the school grounds!

>Quick! We need to take the desks,
>and build a barricade!

>Ahh! They're here!

>I'll hold them back!
>You guys run away!

>We can run away together!
>There's no more time!

>They got Mai-chan!

>Back in our day, club activities were things like drinking water and getting beat up by our senpais.
>Wow...
>Seriously...? I can't believe it...

>I'm sorry! We'll come and rescue you!
>They're here, too!?

>We have to escape to the upper floors!

>The second-years have made a barricade, too!
>Stay back, third-years!

>Huh?

>I mean, third-years always talk too long,
>and it's always nothing but old stories from when they were second-years themselves.

>You mean, in their minds...
>We've already become elderly people!?

>Guh... I'm being treated like an old person as a third-year.
>Well... I guess, from the perspective of the lower grades,
>there's not much of a difference between old people and the older students.

>I just came up with a really good idea.
>Running away isn't going to get us anywhere. We need to go on the offensive.
>Offensive?

>Even old people were young, once upon a time.
>Back then, I bet they were just as irked by old people as we are now.

>If we can get the old people from THEIR youth to tell them their old stories,
>we'll be able to drive them back!
>But, surely they've all passed on by this point?

>If it's Ikko-chan, we can definitely do it.
>Do what, now?

>Whoooo...? Who rouses me from my slumber?

>By acting as a spirit medium, she can summon forth the spirits of the ancestors.
>Even though Obon just ended?

>In my days, potatoes were ALWAYS cooked on braziers.
>Ah... Sorry, I'm a little busy right now.

>Honor meeeee...
>Show me proper reverenceeee...

>Look, they're withdrawing.
>Aren't they withdrawing for a slightly different reason, though?

>It burns... It buuurns... I'll never forgive you, Tokugawa!
>...An ancestor?

>My castle is burning doooooown!
>(AAAAAAAH!)
>Seriously, who is that?
The Tokugawa shogunate ruled Japan in the 17th-19th centuries. Since the latter parts of the period were largely peaceful, it's likely that the spirit possessing Ikko was a daimyo defeated by Tokugawa Ieyasu during the last years of the Sengoku period. One candidate is Toyotomi Hideyori, whose castle was burned down by Tokugawa forces in the Siege of Osaka in 1615.

>Shibuya Duty Diary - First-years these days have backpacks that are way too plainly colored.

>Sidebar: It seems the ancestral summoning went too far back in time... They went and landed on someone with a grudge against Tokugawa-san.

Thanks for reading! Shibuya Near Family will be on break next week.
