In retrospect, how was this so popular? It literally had entire volumes of nothing but people's faces and walls of text. For months the author submitted unfinished drawings.

There is a certain appeal to watching a dumpster fire burn. Unfortunately it loses that appeal when it finally ends, because a core feature of a dumpster fire is the fire; once it is put out it is just garbage.
