Naruto and Sasuke were only really friends during the Zabuza arc and in the early episodes of the Chunin arc, and even in those episodes Sasuke was still bullying Naruto to a certain degree at times.And those few monents don’t justify nearly 600 chapters of one-sided obsession (from Naruto) with the other, and I think Kishimoto realized that, because by the end of the series their friendship was much more based on their supposed similarities in childhood than on tangible interactions they actually had throughout the story.
