He's hated by people who can see that he's a cancer upon the series. He's the protagonist of an original work that didn't make it. He's not what people looked forward to, but the author still loved him. If you really look at it, the second he drops, he and Maki begin consuming a ridiculous amount of screen-time that really goes nowhere. He gets nearly all the credit in the manga itself for coming up with the plan to beat Sukuna, when he was never that kind of guy. Kusakabe was that kind of guy. He infringes on Gojo's position by stealing his body. He just did not need to be so prominent. But still, he's better than Maki. Maki shit just goes absolutely nowhere and she just ends up a worse and less likable/defined version of Toji.

TLDR: Gege could not let JJK0 go.

It's insane how the JJK sequel is still focused on Yuta indirectly, any other mangaka would have had their manga sequel probably feature the child/descendant of the main character, which should have been Yuji's in JJK's case.

yuji is likable because he's a joyful idiot who suffered a lot and put in the effort to be powerful. yuji was made to be discardable, then he gained his selfhood and protected his ideals and then understood his own malice and hatred through mahito (i am you) and how he could be the same as sukuna if he didn't have the same loving people in his life (you are me) and still held onto his own ideals.

yuta's best moment was camping kenjaku. his character could have been fixed if he killed himself to come back as a vengeful cursed spirit, but no, gege didn't do that either. just a poorly made character all around, just competence porn.
