I will never understand how digimon was more popular than monster rancher. Monster rancher had the superior monster designs.
Both are childrens shows.

Monster Rancher was Digimon if it was created by Americans

Not only does it know how to balance drama, adventure, and comedy, the character development is exceptional, and don't even get me started on the japanese music; each adds strength to the scene. While as a kid I preferred MR and Pokemon, I admit that objectively speaking, Digimon anime is superior. The only flaw I find is its fights; they were very limited and robotic, usually deciding everything with a special attack. In this department, I give the win to Pokemon. Despite being more silly and childish, it knew how to choreograph its battles better.

>>282057680Digimon had a much better anime. You can't just slap some marketable designs on screen and say "alright, I win."Monster Rancher wasn't bad, but it lacked depth and flavor.
Monster Rancher was better in the games as it had practical applications with the disk swap function. Monster Rancher had long since been a fixture in the PS/PS2 era. Digimon was better in the animation department as a close competitor to Pokemon. Digimon was the cooler monster show of the time versus the child like Pokemon. Monster Rancher was better in plot and darker than Digimon but Digimon held its own. Sadly Monster Rancher didn't live long and Digimon had it's identity crisis and nostalgia pandering phase. Both were staples of the late 90's and very loved by fans.
>>282057680Having only 1 anime season and and fewer games then falling off to obscurity will do that to you. Don't blame Digimon for still sticking around. Might as well blame Yugioh, Beyblade, Bakugon, and Pokemon while you're at it.
>>282057680Everything in monster rancher looked bland and without identity, be it monster design, character design, gameplay or story. The only relevant thing it had going on was the disc swapping gimmick.
>>282064305Digimon had more lore to it with the movie which were pilot prequels to the anime proper and the sequels since then. It was like they made the anime and didn't know how to fit it all together. It was all very charming. Monster Rancher had it's controversy too with certain episodes not being aired on TV and of course the 3rd season being released very later on. Monster Rancher took characters from the games and made their original series with them. They could have gone further and adapted other games as well.
As a kid these two things alone killed all interest in the series for me and I never watched a single episode. I still think they're dumb designs. And looking through this threat I see a lot of human woman but with cosplay on monsters which nearly killed Digimon at one point. Waifumon are okay in small numbers but looks like the series focused on them far too hard on top of everything.
>>282072007The eye and duck-thing specifically. Realizing I picked like the worst image to crop
>>282071937Well yea. The matrix for monsters in Monster Rancher are base monster types with certain base colors. Then you take those monsters and combine them together in fusion to make new monsters which are just the base monster with a different color pattern. Pic related is Pixe fused with Big Blue (who is a fusion of Tiger and Golem) to make Granity (Pixe and Golem fused). The monster mixing could get very weird when you combined certain monsters together. Digimon mechanics are different and I still, after 25 years don't get it.

>>282072144>Digimon mechanics are differentThere's no base mechanic that stays over the entire series. The whole point of digimon is they're data clusters that became alive, because japanese folklore believes in tsukumogami, and time runs faster in the digital world. For digimon, your aligator rookie digimon might beat 100 other digimon, load their data (eat it), and reach critical mass after some time, evolving to its champion form, a fridge with gun arms, because among the data he loaded was an online fridge ad from costco, and a report on gun violence from CNNs website. A digimon spawning is like prompting a LLM to make a creature out of randomized data from the internet.

>>282072144How so?Digimon can evolve into whatever, but everything aside vpets try keep some form of consistency. Agumon for example can evolve onto any other dinosaur mon or something that fits his fire element, so on, and that on top of "canon" greymon line.
>>282073482>Agumon for example can evolve onto any other dinosaur monI never really understood it. I know there are types that can determine where the line goes. I never really looked into it so I am a brainlet on this subject.

>>282073532>>282073727Digimon evolve based on how you raise them. Treat them like shit and get a bad digimon, treat them with extra kindness and get an good digimon. Many monster taming franchise love to parrot this a lot but digimon is one of the few that actually sticks to the phase "evolve based on how you raise them" where the only limitation is which digimon makes the cut into the games. When you get down to it, their evolutions have no limitations.
>>282074066kek
>>282074116Digimon makes sense as long as you remember that they're data more similar to an avatar or your Twitter photo that some people change every week, but when you try to create a world for them, this coherence is lost. In that case, Pokemon can have weird shit, but they adapt very well to their world, to the point that you can see them as entities with an ecological role.
>Pure NostalgiaGreat thread, guys
And that answers your question OP. Normal humans have an innate revulsion towards furshit.
Monster Rancher had a fairly liked game series but couldn't combine it with the anime for a full frontal attack. Digimon had several popular anime, but the games were all disjointed and more based around the concept of Digimon than having a consistent design. Pokemon had both, and it was able to spread to the cards and merchandise way better as a result. American kids don't have WonderSwans.
>>282057680>Monster rancher had the superior monster designs.Ehhh, they're fairly generic and has a bad habit of having many palette swap designs

>>282057680Digimon was more relatable to the audiences of that time. People like Sci-Fi and Monsters, it worked to great effect with more mature writing and character development than the counterpart to Pokemon. It explains why it is still successful to this day continuing with Anime and Games. Monster Rancher was a bit generic to audiences which explains why it never achieved the same success.
>>282064305Pokemon has the Japanese Feel to it even the Movies are remarkable with it's maturity and free nature.
