People stopped caring about this since about 2017-2018 really
For better or worse. No one here gives a fuck about codecs or encoding or all that shit anymore probably because all the anime comes from crunchyroll rips and no one subs, encoding has more or less stagnated at x265, anime resolution has become stagnated at 720-1080p (well maybe I haven't kept up with what resolution each anime is natively in since like 2018ish again) hardware differences stopped mattering much a bunch of reasons.

I did have a weird issue with MPV recently while watching Nanoha Strikers. The subtitles in the epilogue were displaying wrong. I have no idea why this happened. It worked fine in MPC. But this is the only time I saw this with MPV as well.
>>
>>282074789
Pretty much this. Aside from stuff to reduce banding, why are we worrying about codec compatibility at all? If you're using what is most commonly available, isn't starved for bitrate, and still has decent file size when it's ripped from the BD, who cares?

A better question is what benefit do you think using a codec pack in 2025 offers you? Every major video player supports every codec you're likely to come across these days. The only reason I've found for downloading a codec pack recently was that it got the cutscenes in some old video games to play.

My one big complaint is that MPC Video Renderer (which it uses by default) suddenly got godawful color and upscaling a few years back, and resetting MPCVR's settings doesn't seem to fix it. EVR-CP and MadVR look fine.

Dug up my old screenshots from the archive, which still hold true. Pic related is MPC Video Renderer, upscaling I think 1080p to 1440p.

The only main difference that could be the case is that I'm on Linux and you are likely on Windows (since you are using MPC-HC also).
I tried playing the file on my laptops with W10 and MPV and it does the same font rendering errors yours does. I can see MPV says the video file is corrupt with missing info about chapters, I'm going to say its likely an older method of setting up chapters in this video encode and also displaying fonts that Windows and MPV does not play well with since it works fine on Linux at least for me.

I used mpc for the longest time because the mpv "gui" looks like complete ass and you gotta learn shortcuts so I can understand disliking it.
I only decided to try mpv out after I started getting unplayable videos (not anime related).

For a board that gets about 13 million posts annually, this isn't that common at all and could conceivably be a word used by only a handful of people. In fact, a large chunk of the usages seen are people questioning its usage.
For comparison, here is a commonly used word on /a/, "fag", for the year of 2025 so far:
11510 posts.

As if modern anime deserves to be played in highest quality. Straight from the source it's low quality bloom filter overexposed soft slop, only worsened by low quality crunchy chatgpt subs with not even enough care to align the subs to scene changes or typeset anything

From what I can see, the "latest" update of VLC, 3.0.21., is from June 2024, which is not "years". Just 1 year and 3 months.

Nowadays I watch anime on my TV with my jellyfin server. If I want to open one up on my computer to take screenshots I use mpv usually.

We've hit the point of diminishing returns across most visual technology even for your monitor the only meaningful upgrades have been to 120+Hz and now to OLED.

Since this is the dedicated meta thread can we get a new rule or broader enforcement against blatant bobs vagene tier posting? Emboldened coomers who spam thirst trap jeet comments to ecchi screenshots and fanart. There's nothing wrong with fanservice at all. There's a minimum etiquette level being lost on the increasingly retarded porn addicts making posts. You're not Dorontabi you do have to try to make your post relevant interesting conversational etc.

By my count fag gets 21980 hits for 2024 vs troon's 3743, but only a tiny proportion of fags (around 15% from my count of 100 hits) is actually meant to be an insult. So they actually seem to be equal.

This should generally work but sometimes the seeds make the download speed too unstable so I can see that causing issues. Plus if you were doing this you're picking one episode, which is basically the same as the download sequentially option, which isn't the most efficient way of torrenting. I'd rather just have a fully downloaded local copy to avoid any issues, but it's cool that this does exist, since it was something I was recently wondering if it was possible to do.
>>
>>282087151
Even if all that were true, he'd still be less bad than Tazmo.
>>
>>282086684
This unfortunately doesn't help when there's a signs/songs sub set in the file you're using. Since either it will be marked as en with the normal subs as jp or both will be marked as en, in which case it's a coin flip for which one it chooses. An mpv plugin allows for filtering based on the name of the file, so you can have it ignore anything labeled signs/songs.
>>
is there a plugin or something for mpc that keeps the audio pitch normal-ish when playing videos at faster speeds? both vlc and youtube do it better than mpc.

I'm still prejudiced against MadVR from generations of older machines. EVR(CP) has been basically fine through all those years, but MPCVR is hideous. I'm gonna try a fresh install on another machine and see if it's bad there too, or just some stuck setting on my older install.

Interestingly, in a fresh install on a newer computer, Enhanced Video Renderer (Custom Presenter) is still the default, but now it's the odd one out compared to other renderers in terms of visual results. Here's EVR(CP).

It's to use with the dub audio track. If you're watching subbed you'll need the signs/songs plus the general dialogue. But if you're watching dubbed you don't need the dialogue subbed, just the signs and songs. It's an annoyance caused by casual dub watchers.

Also, here's mpv on the older computer. Basically the same as MadVR.

So the consensus colors are identical between the old and new computers. The odd ones out are:
>MPCVR on the old computer (too bright, with jaggy upscaling)
>EVR(CP) on the new computer (too dim)
Weird result. Now I'm glad I checked though.
>>
>>282075106
That's not an mpv error; it's an actual mistake by the subber. If you look in the subtitle styles, you will see:

Style: Notes,Webdings,28,&H32D7D6D9,&H0000FFFF,&H40222222,&H56000000,0,0,0,0,100,100,0,0,1,3,0,5,10,10,10,0
Style: Notes2,Webdings,22,&H32D2D0D0,&H0000FFFF,&H40262626,&H56000000,0,0,0,0,100,100,0,0,1,3,0,5,10,10,10,0

>>282075445 almost had it. Webdings isn't incompatible or corrupt, but rather a specialized symbol font. So getting readable text means your player didn't find Webdings and substituted a normal font.

>>282076784
Webdings is a Microsoft font, so it makes sense that Linux wouldn't have it.
>>
I've watched anime on my TV using Plex and Jellyfish for years now
>>
>>282096424
Huh, I wonder why they did that then. So not only is MPC being readable due to some MPC issue, but it being readable on Linux is also essentially an error and not intended. Very very strange. Should be a quick and easy fix though if I want to do it.
>>
I only use a CRT
>>
>>282097896
And do you burn the files to DVD or VHS in order to watch it on your CRT? Do you not think watching anime designed to be watched on modern displays on a CRT is stupid? CRTfags love to talk about how older anime were made to be watched on CRTs. Even rereleases of older series likely don't look the same on a CRT as they would have when they aired.

I have a collection, mostly shows I also own on Blu-Ray (it's just more connvenient to use a PC than it is to break out the disc player). It is higher quality and pretty convenient to be able to just pull up the video player instead of going to a website. For seasonal shows though, I agree, no real reason to torrent it, I'm probably going to drop it anyway.

Isn't MPV is the only player fansubs are designed for anymore? Just like opening modern websites in Firefox/Opera Presto/Netsurf/etc renders things strangely when everything is designed for Chromium/Blink/Webkit, I would presume the same is true for video players.
>MPV/mplayer/other historic names is just the system GNU/Video library on Linux/Mac/Android/etc, used everywhere from your boot screen to the menus on your smart fridge, where all development has coalesced around
>the Aegisub devs all use it (on Arch BTW) rather than test in Windows 7 to play anime with Kawai Codec Pack in a VM or something, don't check the software outputs fully compatible files for MPC, Realplayer, Quicktime or anywhere else
>the preview Aegisub shows while the typesetter colormatches sign blanks and whatnot is windowless MPV
>the encoding previews the Vaprsynth/etc guys use is all MPV
>every person working on a release at any level is on MPV testing for MPV
>user instead opens it in an unmaintained WIndows XP CCCP, the subs are slightly lower than the fansubbers expected, or are timed slightly differently to introduce random bleed, maybe an encode sector join causes an unexpected crash at worst
>user complains in the nyaa comments

MPC is just a frontend for an old version of Windows Media Player running in DirectShow borderless playback mode, kept around for things like backwards compatibility with AVI FMV video in old CD games even into the Windows 11 days, forced into a window with some menus like a normal video player. That weeb programmers of old managed to intercept the video to hook in stuff like .ass subtitles and new codecs to this ancient video player Microsoft hasn't touched since the 90s is commendable, but the project is long dead. There will always be one guy maintaining it, like that copy of Firefox that still works on XP, but your job is not creating the most technically impressive player anymore like it was at the time MadVR was king, but struggling to port over features from the rest and have it not blow up. MPC is dead. Long live MPC.
>>
>>282108927
MPC just werks and it's not made by epsteinfags projecting their faggotry on anime fans, so that's good enough for me.
>>
>>282106225
You install Plex, point it to a folder containing media. It then creates a server. On your smart TV (or regular tv with a smart device like a chromecast) you install the Plex client app. It will show you your media files in a youtube-like interface and you can use your TV remote to choose and play them. It works pretty well and doesn't really need cabled-internet speeds. Over wireless is fine.
>>
>>282109019
He'll also need some kind of program to rename things in a batch. Sometimes the file names you get don't play nice with plex. I use Rename My TV Series. Plex will recognize most file names if they have season and episode numbers but sometimes you need to fix them.
>>
>>282109161
I don't rename any of my anime downloads and 99% they're fine in Plex.
>>
it just werks
>>
>>282109196
Sometimes I get stuff that needs to be renamed
>>
>>282109335
The only thing in recent memory that I've had to rename are New Panty & Stocking episodes, because ToonsHub includes the "episode title" in the filename, but the "episode titles" are just sequential numbers for the sub-plots and Plex reads them as episode ranges.

So instead of New.PANTY.and.STOCKING.with.GARTERBELT.S01E09.19.20.21.1080p.AMZN.WEB-DL.DUAL.DDP5.1.H.264.MSubs-ToonsHub.mkv, I need to rename it to New.PANTY.and.STOCKING.with.GARTERBELT.S01E09.1080p.AMZN.WEB-DL.DUAL.DDP5.1.H.264.MSubs-ToonsHub.mkv.

Apart from that, most everything's fine, with some ASS directory naming magic to fix episode numbering or something.
