I’m relatively enjoying it, and there are moments of brilliance like episode 5 or the epilogue of today’s episode, but I’m having a hard time connecting with any of the characters or caring about what’s going on in some segments. But I also haven’t seen much Nichijou, so maybe that’s part of it.

Anon, this is your problem. Not every work of art is made to be relatable. Connecting with characters doesn't make art good. Do you connect with characters watching Salò? How about an abstract work? 2001, do you feel connected to Davs?! It's time to reevaluate the way you treat art, anon.

Then you will see...

It feels like with such an ensemble cast and overall extended storylines with the characters that we are supposed to care about them, though.

city does try to be relatable: being poor and trying to make money, limited time with a childhood friend, one-sided crushes etc.
