So, I used to hate them with a passion, but as I've gotten older, I've actually grown to appreciate cases with the Detective Boys in them because they are more often than not a departure from the usual setup of KOing Kogoro. Also they got less annoying with time or maybe I just got used to them.In fact, any case that isn't "Conan with Ran and Kogoro run into 1 dead body with 3 suspects" is usually better than others. Like the Columbo style ones where we know the murderer or if there's 4+ suspectsToday's case was a good example of this

Are there any cases where the murderer didn't have any noble revenge motive and acted only out of personal gain or even bloodlust? Even in cases where the victim wasn't somehow responsible for the death of someone else, they are always shown to be cruel to the perpetrator in a flashback in some other way.

Of course they can't, it's their job. The purely "good" version of a detective is like an HR manager or an insurance adjuster. Any job where you're investigating your own class. Middle class people self-policing. We instinctively understand that wherever these forces exist, they're really just stooges or middle managers. They're kind of cannibalistic. The respectability of a detective comes from their ability to enter into the underworld for their clients and return back home relatively unharmed. They need that attribute, or they become weenies and tattle-tales.You can see it in Conan. The first thing that happens is that he effectively dies / has a near-death experience and becomes a ghost. He can only influence the real world by possessing Kogoro. Ostensibly, the point of Conan as a detective is that his disguise / status as a ghost gives him protections that high school detective Shinichi never had. Shinichi is the pointless "pure white" detective who succumbs to the BO because he lacks appropriate protection against underworld figures like the BO.Anyways, that's what Marlowe means to me. I couldn't tell you anything about the detective himself. The movie was awful.
