Alright, it is Sunday and I am gonna post the thirty-fourth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is 境界のRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>281982331

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

In addition, I will be dumping a one-shot story from the Rumic World and Rumic Theater series that came out around this time. Today, that will be "She's Coming Tonight". The scans I have of the one-shot are fan scans.
>>
Original title was 幽霊堂のお札 (yūrei-dō no ofuda) so, お札 (ofuda) was localized to charm. Furinkan went with Talisman.

June 1st, 2016. Author's note:
"Q: What's the most shocking thing someone has ever said to you?
A: Everytime a Hanshin player says the word "retire," I'm shocked."

I guess Rokumon's line on the last page was mistranslated. It was "そういえば気になる事を言ってました" but given what he says on this page, it really should've been translated as "By the way, they said something that is nagging at me."

Hm.

>>
>>282098193
It would be a pretty big waste for Kuroboshi. Good thing they're on the ball. 浮遊霊 (floating spirit) was once again localized as wandering spirit. The Spirit Way Purse was translated from 霊道巾着 (rei-dō kinchaku), so "Spirit Way Purse" is accurate. 巾着 appears to also mean "drawstring bag".

Original title was にじんだメモ (nijinda memo). メモ being a loanword from the English word memo. Maybe Smudged would be more accurate in context? Or maybe not.

June 8th, 2016. Author's note:
"Q: Who are some celebrities or entertainers you've been paying attention to lately?
A: Koyoharu Gotouge was nice to talk to."
Furinkan's note: "Gotouge is the creator of Demon Slayer."

霊いぶり出し香 (rei iburi-dashi ka) for our spirit smoke out again. Previously, I translated it as "spirit incense" or "spirit drawing incense" but it might actually be closer to "spirit smoke incense". Either way, we've seen it before. Spirit bonds are once again back, with the same redundant explanation.

Maybe someone who speaks Japanese can tell me what this is clarifying: 霊絆とは霊的絆の事である (rei kizuna to wa reiteki kizuna no kotodearu).

Naginata is apparently in some ways considered a feminine weapon in Japan due to some interesting stuff historically that I am honestly not qualified to get into. You'd need to read some actual scholarly stuff. This is why it was also a physical education option for women in the 20th century. The sport being practiced here is 新しいなぎなた (atarashii naginata) which means "new Naginata".

Well, she is pretty. So, what gives her away as being from "the south"? Her line here is "誰が彼女やねーん" which is translated pretty directly. I can't tell if it even has a specific accent, but it might. Anyway, what gives her away is she is performing a manzai slap with the type of punchline you'd expect from this sort of thing. 漫才 (manzai) is a traditional style of comedy where you have a 突っ込み (tsukkomi or straight man) and a ボケ (boke or funny man). The straight man often reacts with a light-hearted playful backhand slap as a retort to the boke's jokes. Anyway, due to the popularity of these acts in Osaka, the Kansai dialect and Osaka became associated with the entire act. And this is what Sakura Mamiya is referring to here and specifically reacts with 関西の人?! (kansai no hito), ie. "She's from Kansai?!"

The sign by the octopus says たこ焼 (takoyaki, ie. octopus dumplings) and the flour says 小麦粉 (komugiko, flour). Takoyaki was first popularized in Osaka and is very popular in the Kansai region.

End of chapter. In Japanese, this is called ロシアンルーレットタコパ (roshianrūrettotakopa). As you can tell, we have a loanword from the English term Russian Roulette and takopa comes from "takoyaki party". Oh and the Kansai girl is reacting with the very classic なんでやねーん (nandeya ne ̄ n) which is very common retort by the tsukkomi and shows up all the time in stuff referencing manzai.

草刈さん was the original title. VIZ left it untranslated since it is a proper noun, but in case you're curious, 草刈り means mowing or cutting grass. I don't know what the difference between 草刈 and 草刈り is. I'm not sure what the sabi on the jar refers to and hopefully the story will clarify, but if it is 寂 then it refers to tranquility as far as I can tell.

I can post the bit regarding Raito and Refuto from the 2018 interview that Rumiko Takahashi did where she discussed a lot of the characters. She said the following about them:

"I used the concept of the rabbit because I wanted something that, visually, was easy to identify as cute. I thought that I needed some characters related to scythes as well, and in fact these characters made the chapters dealing with scythes easier to draw."

Oh and yes, Refuto is calling Rinne a ボケカス (bokekasu) as usual.

By the way, in the original, it seems like he didn't say サビー until this panel. By the way, サビー (sabī) seems to be more commonly used for "savvy". But the word for rust in Japanese is 錆 (sabi). When spelled さび or サビ it seems like it can mean chorus. Anyway, characters having a weird vocal tic at the end of their sentences is a goofy but common thing in Japanese media (see Lum in Urusei Yatsura for example). It might've seemed a bit more natural in Japanese since there are other meanings though.

Of course, he is a huge thing of rust with stupid eyes so it probably seemed stupid blatant in Japanese as well.

The expression here is お疲れ様でしたっ (otsukaresamadeshita ~tsu). I've heard about this expression before because of its particular use in Japanese. I've seen it translated this way the most and it seems like the most literal translation. I've seen some things translate it as "you must be tired". Anyway, it seems to be a somewhat standard way for people higher up the chain to thank people for something rigorous lower down the chain. People even say it as a good bye at the end of a work day.
>>
>>282100365
They referred to it as サビた草刈ガマ (sabita kusakari gama). Japanese doesn't seem to distinguish between scythes and sickles, but as you can see, they included the word "kusakari" so this is specifically a grass-cutting sickle and hence Kusakari-san.

In the 2018 interview, Rumiko Takahashi said the following about Sakura Mamiya:

"Since she was able to see ghosts, Sakura couldn’t be afraid. I drew her in a way where she wouldn’t frighten easily which may have led her to become an unexpressive character. Even for me, she’s still a mystery, but I thought it was a good point that no one knew what she was thinking."

I do find it a bit fun that there are times when Rumiko herself didn't know what was going on in her head. This obviously is not one of those times though.
>>
>>282100835
I remember this scene well.
>>
>>282100846
On Twitter, on September 30th, 2021, Rumiko Takahashi had the following to say about Sakura Mamiya:

"Since she can see spirits everyday, Sakura became a calm child who only speaks when it is needed for story purposes. She has a sense of calmness that can be off-putting. Rinne often says he does not know what she is thinking but there were times where even I couldn't grasp what I was drawing. Sometimes I thought, "there's almost nothing to this character at all," there was nothing you could latch on to. I didn't know what Sakura was thinking, but I happily drew her."
>>
>>282100927
In an Q&A by Da Vinci magazine in 2022, Rumiko Takahashi got asked about what she said on Twitter regarding Sakura Mamiya:

"Q19: I was also not able to grasp the idea that "there were times where even I couldn't grasp what I was drawing. Sometimes I thought, "there's almost nothing to this character at all," there was nothing you could latch on to. I didn't know what Sakura was thinking, but I happily drew her." Does this mean that you were able to imagine her feelings while thinking about what she would say, do, and how things would turn out? I would like to know how you do it.

[Takahashi:] The fun part of drawing Sakura were her little "comments". It was like a gentle rush.

The scenes where her feelings come out is when they are directed toward Rinne, so although I could understand her feelings, I wondered how Sakura would express those feelings while I was drawing her. I wanted her to be always somewhat aloof, and I was searching for that kind of Sakura-ness.

Q20: Not only in Kyokai no RINNE but in any of your works, do you ever think to yourself, "I know exactly how this person feels!" Do you have any characters that you feel that way about?
[Takahashi:] Godai in Maison was quite easy for me to understand."

Hence why I felt the need to post this now. Sakura Mamiya's contributions are little bits, often deadpan straight man retorts or basic observations. But when it comes to stuff regarding Rinne, it is a lot less vague. Anyway, speaking of, the term translated here was "ヒモ" which means string, but also refers to a man who is financially dependent on a woman (including someone being pimped out). It can also confusingly also refer to a pimp himself, which is a bit odd. But VIZ did good, maybe gigolo would've also worked but honestly, it is whatever. The full line was "とうとう鳳のヒモに" if you want to evaluate it for yourself.

"Q: The second half of 2016 is coming! Are there any works that left an impression on you in the first half of the year?
A: The movie of Chihayafuru and the drama of Sanada Maru."

I didn't know Chihayafuru had a movie. I actually read a fair bit of that series until I got frustrated by the K Manga app. I should really read it again, I actually really liked it. And I guess Rumiko must've liked it in some capacity too. Oh man, the movie is Live Action. They made three of these movies and they have a big star in them, so it seems a lot of people know the movies more than the manga.

it's probably the やねーん
it seems like any "accent" is just making up some sounds at the end of the sentence but surely there's more to it in spoken japanese and japanese writing is simply limited in capturing the other pronunciations due to the limitations of kana right? right?

We got ourselves a bit of a classic gesture. I feel Rumiko doesn't use it that often compared to other manga. It also doesn't seem to have a common name so I just have to use the term "silly me gesture" which is from TVtropes.

I feel like this is a good a time as any to post what Rumiko Takahashi had to say regarding Rinne on Twitter on October 3rd, 2023:

"I was aiming for a relaxed style. He listens to the spirits and persuades them, so he is interactive. His job is to send them on their way, so he is not a selfish person. The role was different from Inuyasha and Ranma. It was not a battle with the spirits.

Rinne was so occupied with money worries that it was hard for him to worry about romance in more than one direction, so he was focused only on Sakura."

Tsubasa directly contrasts from this in regards to his approach to spirits.

She had this to say about Rinne Rokudo in the 2018 interview:

"This character, rather than a fighter, was a negotiator who helped purify spirits. He was different from my previous protagonists who all had wide ranges of expressions, and I was aware that this made him an “exhausted-type protagonist”. I also realized that Rinne was pretty serious and I drew him thinking that he didn’t like to go about his work in an underhanded way."

Of course, Rinne had turned to underhanded stuff on occasion. Usually with some guilt though.

The wonders of technology. 走馬灯 is the term for revolving lantern. We've discussed this before so here's my note from then. According to a quick Google (showing a cultural note by the Japanese Wiki which is a translated section of Japanese Wikipedia, it seems), it is a kind of garden lantern which is crafted to show a revolving shadow picture with its inside and outside frames.

They also note that: "Recently, somato has come to be used in words to describe the flashback of one's lifetime memory, such as somato phenomenon (a flashback phenomenon) and somato experience (a flashback experience), which is said to be experienced by a dying person — or which a near-death experiencer says h (or she) saw. It becomes rare for the public to see the real somato, so the word somato is often misunderstood to indicate the phenomenon itself."
>>
>>282101689
The caption made no sense to me but looking into it, I can sort of get what VIZ was going for. I think this wasn't the right call. The original line is: "ワゴンセールでなんとたったの30円なのだ" which can be translated to "It's only 30 yen on the wagon sale." ワゴンセール (wagonseeru) clearly comes from the English words "wagon sale". But what's a wagon sale? This dictionary says it is a "bargain corner to sell off stock cheaply".

So, I would've gone with "It's only 30 yen on clearance" or something.

Here's a bit from the long interview in 2021 regarding Rinne and shinigami in general:

"[Q:] Also, although there are many "Shinigami manga" in the world, I felt that the image of a "good Shinigami" depicted in this work was new. Aside from the damashigami, Rinne and the others are righteous beings who guide lost spirits.

Takahashi: I've always believed that that is what a shinigami is supposed to be. They're not scary beings that appear in front of healthy people and forcibly take them to the afterlife. Yes, there is a frightening image of a skullface with a big sickle, but I have a stronger impression of shinigami as a navigator who takes the souls of the dead to the other world. After all, they are a kind of god, so they are supposed to be there to save people (laughs)."
>>
>>282101919
Also from that same interview:

"[Q:] Rinne is forced to work as a shinigami due to his grandmother's quota and his father's debt, but he doesn't really feel forced to do it.

Takahashi: I guess he's a serious person at heart (laughs). Even if you don't take quotas or debts into consideration, he probably has the blood of a shinigami in him and wants to properly send lost spirits to the Wheel of Reincarnation."

I do think this somewhat explains Rinne's odd economic situation. Rinne genuinely puts a fair bit of his income back towards the debt even though we've never really seen auditors or debt collectors come after people. Hell, Sabato is slippery but it is clear that if Rinne chose to maybe spend a bit more money on himself rather than putting more towards the debt, he probably would be fine. Of course, this is me trying to find an in-universe reason for something that is baked into the premise of the manga, but I do find it a bit funny and it does make me feel a bit better about why doesn't he just accept more money from others and why don't others help him even more financially.

It said 子供死神3~7歳女児用 (kodomo shinigami 3 ~ 7-sai joji-yō) rather than Shinigami Children, which means "For Shinigami Children, girls ages 3-7" like an advertisement or the box of a product. The product itself was referred to as ままごとシート (mamagoto shīto) which means play sheet.

I'll be honest, I haven't watched it. I assume the sign has something to do with etiquette or maybe the flowers. I have no clue.

Interestingly enough, I don't think I've checked what the term for "restless spirit" is in this series. It is "未成仏霊" which appears to literally be "not yet Buddha spirit" or "unenlightened spirit", but essentially a Buddhist reference to the same idea as a restless spirit.

This cover was not redrawn for the English release. If you flip it over, you can see the textbook contents are cut off and somewhat misspelled and seemingly nonsense in some sort of English and French combination. Entertainingly, the written portion seen in the notebook appears to be completely correct English and describes something directly from the series. I imagine the Japanese below it is a translation, though it is too small for me to really check. I wouldn't be surprised if this English text was directly from VIZ's translation of Rin-ne that Rumiko referenced.

July 20th, 2016. Author's note:

A: I can't wear clothes with characters on them anymore."

>>282103653
羽田アオイ in Japanese. アオイ is a somewhat common name and means blue or refers to a particular flower. 羽田 is a neighborhood and last name and apparently means "wing field". That neighborhood of Tokyo ended up having a prominent airport though the place wasn't named after it. I don't know if this is relevant.
>>
>>282103720
Emotion being 念 (nen) again.

>>282103625
Yeah. I wish they didn't, but of all the series to do it with, Rin-ne probably makes the most sense.
>>
>>282103761
So, this one's name was 背水ジン in Japanese and when I googled it, it gave me an expression. So while the Furigana clarifies that it is pronounced Semizu Jin, the characters say Haisui Jin. 背水の陣 (haisui no jin) is an expression that refers to a last ditch effort or last stand. I think it might literally mean "backwater formation" or something? Not sure. Another expression it is similar to "burning one's boats" which I haven't actually heard. "Going for broke" is probably the one I'm most familiar with. Anyway, you get the idea.
>>
>>282103834
VIZ did what they could. Probably for the best to just have a note. They did have to be a bit creative with the fourth panel (with mixed results) as in the original, the boy was asking what the punchline, point or ending was to that story. The punchline of a story is called an オチ (ochi) which sounds like 落ちる (ochiru) after all.
>>
>>282103935
Wasn't the same words twice in the second panel, but I think they're just different forms of the same word "落としてやる" (I'll drop it? Maybe? Maybe you'll drop it? I'm not sure.) and 落ちろ (fall down, fail).

my first thought was she meant characters as in writing (kanji, kana) because she has gotten bigger compared to her youth and writing can stretch weird or even have a part disappear if it rolls under
but if it's characters as in characters from a work, well the part about stretching weird can still apply

Summer chapters mean beach chapters! Anyway, the original title was 浮気の現場 which does mean "The Scene of the Adultery" or "The Scene of the Cheating" as far as I can tell. Furinkan curiously translated it as "The Fooling-Around Spot" which may be accurate in context, I'm not sure.

In case you're curious, the term for "lazy river" in Japanese is just 流れるプール (nagareru pūru, flowing pool). Admittedly, it being called lazy river in English almost makes it funnier.

And yes, the "homewrecker" label was ドロボー猫 (dorobō neko or thieving cat), a term we've seen a few times before. No need for a cat pun this time though.
>>
>>282104473
Lifeguard probably felt really bad.
>>
>>282104489
Interloper here was another instance of thieving cat in the original. As for the Scene Reenactment Tube, it was 現場再現チューブ (genba saigen chūbu) which translates to what is stated here, with チューブ presumably being a loanword from English. And hey, that seems cheaper than the lantern. Good thing it was in water.

>>
>>282104610
End of chapter! This was still much cheaper than a lot of your other jobs, Rinne. And boy, since Rumiko wanted to emphasize her face being different, her eyes are really something. I think she may have also given her a smaller nose.
>>
Original title is デッキに近づくな. デッキ (dekki) seems to actually mean "deck" rather than "dock" as it is a loanword from it, but I assume in the story, the thing in question can be called either reasonably.

今夜彼女がやって来る or "She's Coming Tonight" was published on June 6th, 2016 in Big Comic Spirits. As such, it was published around the time of these chapters. This is a bit confusing, but Big Comic Spirits is not the same as the Big Comic Special (though they obviously are related), which is published annually. Most of the one-shots I post are these annual Big Comic Special. Big Comic Spirits is the weekly seinen magazine by Shogakukan (the people behind Shonen Sunday and many other magazines). This story was created for Big Comic Spirits' 35th anniversary.

This translation is a fanscan. Of course, as unofficial fanscans and translations, they have their own issues but at the least we don't have to worry about flipped art. This does seem to be a different team than the majority of fanscans I've posted, so it does feel a bit different. This fanscan appears to have tracked down the original magazine, as such we have the full color pages. In fact, this story appears to not have been republished since the original magazine.

I'll be honest, I'm somewhat ambivalent about this one. I almost want to blame the translation, since it feels a little stilted but it is just a part of it. Don't let my opinion sway you though. Since it isn't the annual Big Comic Special manga, it isn't about a middle-aged man.

I would think the term translated to appointment might've been ランデブー (randebū) or rendezvous since Japan seems to like to use that term for dates even though in English, we use it to just mean any meeting between people at a specific time. But that's just a guess from context.

Anyway, another name note from Furinkan: "Yuka Shiratori (白鳥優花) means "tender flower" and "swan"."

Here's the cover of Big Comic Spirits where this one-shot was published. Honestly, calling it a Rumic Theater one-shot is a bit inaccurate since Rumic Theater is the name used to publish collections of the Big Comic Original one-shots, but it is all a bit nebulous to me. Rumic Theater is called 高橋留美子劇場 (Takahashi Rumiko Theater) and 高橋留美子傑作集 (Takahashi Rumiko Masterpiece Collection) in Japanese and I don't really know the distinction between the two. This I guess technically qualifies as Rumic World (るーみっくわーるど) but honestly, they used that name for early Rumiko Takahashi one-shots and not much else after that. And some of those early ones also got published under the Masterpiece Collection name in Japan, so whatever.

And yeah, I see that. But I also never saw the word "Rumic World" on Came the Mirror, but maybe I'm off base. Wikipedia lists Rumic World as having ended in 2015 on Rumiko Takahashi's page, which is something. The Japanese one seems to just call the first three Rumic World and the next by their title but grouping them all together as "Short story collection". Also, the Japanese page is very detailed and has a lot of random trivia like talking about common sound effects in her works.

burning boats reminds me of what they say the conquistadores did, though wiktionary clarifies on this and mentions another event

part of it is probably because a lot of people don't know what one-shots are

It's common for high fashion models to weigh that much or even less while being 178 cm/5'10" or so. Though a high fashion model certainly is much thinner than the average person. Well, this girl is known for her beauty and seems to take her appearance very seriously, so I wouldn't be surprised if she was aiming for a model-like figure. Besides, since she's a Japanese girl, "tall" probably means 170 cm/5'7" or something along those lines. Being slightly under 50 kg at that height doesn't sound too outlandish.
...But I'm well aware that my opinions on this matter differ from those of the majority.
