Genuine love did manifest, but he was so twisted that even in that he made his first wife's life miserable, but it still kinda shone through his twisted demeanour and the whole grave thing was something that was relatively well written prior to Tappei's "True intentions" with it. You can make genuinely evil characters feel human, and to be honest Tappei has been going down this weird route of flanderization for his story. Its why WN Arc 6 and before feel so different from Arc 7+, he's ditched a lot of his early WN philosophies and instead of crafting a great world like Rifujin does and is just going for cheap shock value. The Seven Deadly Sins are rooted in humanity man, its why making them cartoonishly inhuman just feels shitty. These are more demons than people
