Just because some series are talked about more in popular anime circles doesn't mean the fanbase is devoted or interested enough to buy books/merch. The real money comes from character merch these days but manga publishers seem to have trouble recognizing which stories have both plots/characters that will resonate with both Japanese and International audiences. Anime merch + streaming profits are determined more by overseas sales as of the past decade so it'll be interesting to see if publishers start paying closer attention to which series are not only generating social media buzz but also sales in overseas markets.
