I work at a big bookstore that sells manga, light novels, danmei and more. I've been working here for over 10 years, ask me anything about it.

Manga sales trends?
What won't people buy?
What do people complain about the most?

Ask away. Keep it /a/ related please, this isn't /lit/.
>>
>>282127819
How often do people buy those big Berserk books?
>>
>>282127889
1-2 sell very regularly.
3-5 do move units but there's a notable drop between 5 and 6. We don't restock 6 or higher as often.

How much actual work do you have to do? Can you just stand at the register reading manga and Penguin Classics all day?

I had a friend tell me that they were interested in working at their local bookstore, but that as part of the interview process, that they have to have read the majority of the entries in /lit/'s recommended reading charts. They aren't well-read so they didn't make the cut. Is this the way it is at most bookstores?

Also, you look like this:

I remember going to a public library and finding some pages of nudity being torn out of manga irc it was some tiddies from Monster or some some female nudity from Berserk or something. Have you ever seen manga in the store vandalized in a manner that made you lift an eyebrow?

Younger girls - Shonen
Older girls - BL

There's a mix that also buy shoujo and josei but they're rarer.

>>282128180
Not sure about other stores, but where I am I had to sell the person on 2 titles as part of my interview. One book I knew and one book I didn't know. I think they were moreso testing how I responded and interacted then anything else.

>>282128388
YES. Someone went to the BL section and put religious cards about praying the gay away inside each one that wasn't plastic wrapped. Booty Royale also commonly gets manhandled, I think that's less intentional and more to do with the cover.

Astro Boy, Wonder Cat and the Minecraft manga often have damaged covers. We've had to put them higher on the shelves because of the little kids.

>>282129838
Yeah although Spider-Man and Batman can sometimes keep up on the lower end of the spectrum.

Straya.

>>282130659
Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint already sells well but I expect that will blow up more. The Last Elf and The Barbarians Bride are seeing growing interest. Kagurabachi is growing fast.

Killer Shark in Another World I think could break out with an anime.

Honey Lemon Soda I expected would do better. Don't Call It Mystery might finally sell with an anime.

>>282130660
Ask the store. Where I am we usually have one unwrapped for people to look at, but for whatever reason that copy tends to sell first.

>But bathing in custard is counterproductive
Is that an idiom? All I get is some story about a woman bathing in it to get over her "custard-phobia".
>>
>>282131483
It's a metaphor. You love custard, would eat nothing else if you could. But you eat very much and you get fat. And bathing in it would increase your contact with it but not your ability to taste it while not getting you clean. A little is all you really need to linger in that zone of satisfaction, and watching others eat it extends the experience without adding calories. Boys are like that. If you have too much to do with them they wreck your life. You want to adhere to their surface like paint, but that's less time actually savoring their essence and you end up all sticky. But having one in your mouth sometimes and reading about them all the time, lots of satisfaction and few calories. Moderation is the core of responsible drug use.

That sounds more like you being attracted to women you don't respect so you don't feel so guilty for taking advantage of them. It's more like having a regular hooker you patronize monthly and a lot of porn in order to live in tiddy land economically because you know traditional relationships are designed to predate you and just don't participate while always telling people 'someday' so they shut up about it.

Doujin are typically only sold in specialist stores like Tora no ana. They're produced in small quantities so a wider distribution isn't realistic.

Otherwise, I Love the Villainess and Roll Over & Die do alright. The anime for There's No Freaking Way I'll be Your Lover! Unless... hasn't helped much.

We ordered big on The Girl Who Wants to Be a Hero and the Girl Who Ought to Be a Hero but it hasn't done well.

Lots of students, the older crowd tends to come on weekends. It's a big city store. Girls tend to come in groups. More girls are coming to the store since we started stocking danmei and webtoons.

Over the past few years I'm seeing more kids coming in with parents who are interested in manga too. We're at the stage where the anime/manga generation are having kids and passing that interest down to them.

>>282131914

Doesn't surprise me, the amount of buyfags willing to buy english trannylated physical LNs is probably near nonexistent outside very normalfag shit like MT or rezero.
People into TLd LNs tend to not be buyfags.
Buyfags tend to go for the raws directly.

The first few volumes do okay but people seem to get bored of them pretty quickly. They don't usually have long term sales.

>And how much your store has them compared to shounen/shoujo/seinen/josei and "mixed" genres such as romcom and isekai?
We keep a few volumes but shounen and seinen always do better.

>Is it true that majority of people tend to buy more mainstream stuff rather than obscure/niche ones?
Yes.

Men do seem more likely to judge a book by its cover, or title too. I often see people talking about Booty Royale and Inside the Tentacle Cave and laughing about it.

Yen Press was never banned, but my understanding was that they were considered too risky for most bookstores after the NGNL incident.

J-Novel Club always had distribution issues to Australia so you likely never saw them either. Seven Seas used to have distribution issues, but ever since PRH started distribution for them they're good.

NGNL was refused classification so it's banned for import and sale.

Oh jesus yes, Western Comics are struggling.
The only Graphic Novel that regularly outsells manga is Dog Man and Captain Underpants.
You have the evergreen books like Dark Knight Returns and Sandman and All Star Superman.

Do you do those intentionally silly summaries I've seen some bookstores do nowadays?
I mean something like "Little boy fights ants" under a HunterxHunter volume (Saw that yesterday at my bookstore, among others).
If yes, have you wrote any?

Shoujo overall seems to be a dying demo in the Western manga sphere compared to its heydey when Fruits Basket and magical girl manga were selling like hotcakes in the 2000s. Do you see this in sales numbers? From what I've seen online it seems like the money-spending women seem more interested in specifically BL, Webtoons, and Danmei nowadays.

What anticipated manga (either due to incoming anime or social media hype) didn't live up to expectations sales-wise? You mentioned Honey Lemon Soda in a previous post and that was one where I saw a lot of people pushing for a localization but it ended up selling much less than expected.
>>
>>282127819
Have digital sales affected sales?
>>
>>282127819
Why is it so rare to see anything other than shonen on sale in bookstores? Are the sales poor?
Most manga stores I've been to only sell the same Naruto/Bleach/JJK/etc and prominently or exclusively stock Pokémon or Yugioh merch.
I always found this strange, as if everyone is going crazy for Puniru for example this season, you'd imagine there's value in tracking down some manga volumes and figures to capitalize on it while it's hot, rather than stocking more Red-Eyes Black Dragon figures and the same One Piece volumes I'd imagine everyone interested in it already has.
Do consumers still broadly only care about Naruto? I thought there'd be a buying shift around when series like Dragonmaid/YuruCamp/Senkosan were being talked about on Twitter in large numbers years back, but I suppose the turnover is still too poor to take the risk?
JB Hi-Fi stocks movies other than The Avengers. Why don't manga stores stock anything but Naruto?

The main one affected seems to be light novels. The digital only and digital first publishers have done irreparable damage to the physical market.

>>282142545
Oshi no Ko, the past few volumes have not sold. I take it the ending is bad? The first few volumes sold extremely well.

Bocchi the Rock We ordered a lot of but people didn't buy it on release. It's moving some units over time, but notable that the hype from the anime didn't translate to high sales. Similar thing to Nokotan.

>>282142366
Yes and a little bit.

>>282140603
>women seem more interested in specifically BL, Webtoons, and Danmei nowadays
They also like villainess and villainess adjacent works. We under ordered Reincarnated In A Mafia Dating Sim, we didn't expect the popularity on that manga.

>>282142790
>Do consumers still broadly only care about Naruto?
Yes. It's a combination of the covers and general appeal. For many years I think the market cultivated the shonen image and now other bookstores can't seperate from that.

There is still a sizeable audience that can't see manga beyond DBZ, Naruto and like 3 others.
>>
>>282144123
>Bocchi the Rock We ordered a lot of but people didn't buy it on release. It's moving some units over time, but notable that the hype from the anime didn't translate to high sales
As someone who's a fan of Bocchi, it's almost certainly because the manga is kind of shit compared to the anime and fans are much more interested in buying character merch and music related to the series.
>>
>>282142790
>Dragonmaid
Not OP but I've actually worked with Futabasha for localizing/merchandising and the rep actually said Dragon Maid is pretty bad at moving merch sales for how "well-known" it is within the weeb community and how many anime seasons it has. Just because some series are talked about more in popular anime circles doesn't mean the fanbase is devoted or interested enough to buy books/merch. The real money comes from character merch these days but manga publishers seem to have trouble recognizing which stories have both plots/characters that will resonate with both Japanese and International audiences. Anime merch + streaming profits are determined more by overseas sales as of the past decade so it'll be interesting to see if publishers start paying closer attention to which series are not only generating social media buzz but also sales in overseas markets.

LN publishers (JNC mainly) pushed hard against physical media. So the audience for LNs is primarily digital now.

Chinese and to an extent Korean novel publishers haven't done that. Pretty sure some of the publishers of the Chinese material are even physical only with no digital at all.

Kids like shonen and animals. All that cat manga is targeting a very specific audience.

Rosmei? People ask about their titles pretty often but we can’t get them in. They have stupid distribution to my understanding. There’s a reason the danmei section is 98% Seven Seas Entertainment.

>>
>>282144123
>Oshi no Ko, the past few volumes have not sold. I take it the ending is bad? The first few volumes sold extremely well.
It's one of those series that has a REALLY strong first episode/volume, but the longer it goes on after that, the more obvious it is that the rest of the series is pretty mediocre by comparison.
>>
>>282133566
Women statistically shop a lot more than men in general. The very act of going shopping is a hobby for a lot of women, so it makes sense that female manga fans would be more inclined to buy and collect physical copies. Women also buy a lot more in other categories of merch (keychains, acrylic, pin, etc) than men do.
>>
Bookshop anon, this is a good thread

>What's been the biggest purchase/order you've seen for just manga/LNs?
Some people buy batches of $2000 worth of manga every month.

>Are there other common Western books you tend to see people purchase alongside their manga?
Young adult books and Asian novels in general.

Light novel purchasers don’t usually buy western novels. They strictly buy light novels. Other than Deltora Quest and Brandon Sanderson which I find funny.

Girls who are into shoujo and josei tend to buy young adult novels. Girls who are into BL sometimes buy comic books.

Danmei readership has the widest variety. Someone will pick up Run Wild, along with a crime novel and a cupcake cookbook.

>>282152699
Yes although we can’t get most of To Love Ru now.

>>282152809
Women. A girl will grab Dick Fight Island and gladly bring it to the front counter then stare me down while I ask what kind of bag they want.
