Now that the dust has settled, how do you feel about the manga as a whole?
>>282149237I've been reading it weekly for a while now. I think it ends well enough for me not to be disappointed. Sure Thorfinn and the author both get roasted for war bad but the manga does a decent enough job to show how idealistic that perspective is. My favorite character was Thorkel
>>282149237It's got so many problems Like the first arc ended up well written entirely by accident
>>282149237It was good before Askeladd died and became shit afterwards.
>>282149237It feels less like a manga and more like a comic series where at some random point in the story a different author with a wildly different interpretation of the story will take over the series and make the main character act completely differentExcept in this case it's the same exact author and he just ran out of ideas but didn't end the series for some reason
>>282149237The final arc is really kind of disappointing. I mean, I guess you could say that's the point, but I feel there's no conclusion - the characters just pack up and leave. That one bad guy has the sword he wanted and is now King Shit. You'd think they would really do something about that.
>>282151019Yeah basically
>>282149237Great manga. Most people who complain do so for ideological, not artistic ones. This happens a lot these days.>Work doesn't do what I want = it's bad.
>>282149237wasted potential
Fell of completely after Farmland saga, i can barerly recall the baltic war stuff, and even if it just read the Vinland portions, I cant remember anything
>>282152148Its worldview is one that I disagree with, and I think the way it came into the story kept getting in the way of the art and repeatedly wasted good ideas
>>282152148>ideological, not artistic onesNobody cares about "ideology." Shonen "ideologies" are the most half-baked juvenile things that one could ever read. You can't even call it an "ideology." There's a reason why Mary Sue's, Gary Stu's and talk-no-jutsu's get clowned on so hard and it's because it makes for awful storytelling. Conflict is the root of a story. The greatest story in the world is a song of wrath, not a song of peace and friendship. It's a shit story by objective metrics.
He won
>>282153708My hero
So when are the epilogue chapters supposed to come out
>>282153708>Trail of Tears
>>282153708he will meet a violent end in the epilogue
>>282149237Vinland Saga will always have a special place in my heart ("I have no enemies" and "I forgive you Thorfinn" were outstanding payoffs), and I appreciate what Yukimura's trying to do - but I really feel he should've contracted the series. He was trying to juggle an interesting story, the challenge of the semblance of accuracy with Norseman, Danelaw, and North America, the mystique behind the historical Thorfinn, and two central themes of the struggle for enduring peace, and a veteran soldier's redemption? Stretching Thorfinn's story over time and geography was a double edged sword. One, his character development couldn't complement the length and width of the tale (butter spread over too much bread), and two apart from Thorfinn and his orbiting cast, there wasn't an alternative planetary presence to produce the charisma and spectacle to fill the vast expanse.tl;dr, Yukimura's really, really bitten more than he could chew there
>>282149237Didn't the same author say that he just make the first arc good to sell and then once the series became popular he just started to use it to spout his bullshit?
>>282149237It has mediocre ending but it as a whole it was great. Also at least it has ending unlike some other historical manga like Vagabond or Historie.
