Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the thirty-fifth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is 境界のRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.Previous thread: >>282097793I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
Cute cover. That little bit of screentone shading goes a long way.Oh, Furinkan notes that: "In 2017 when volume 35 of Kyokai no RINNE went on sale, Rumiko Takahashi reached a total of 200 million copies of her work sold. "They link a gallery of celebration artwork here: https://furinkan.com/features/articles/artists2.html Most of it features series other than Rin-ne, but I'll post the Rin-ne ones after the dump.August 10th, 2016. Author's note:"Q: What's your favorite instant food?A: Lately, it's frozen dandan noodles without soup."
>>282170498I always liked sunflowers.
>>282170512Cute scene. Well, besides the owner's haggard faces.
>>282170531Getting lost in there for three days is such a nightmare compared to the other phenomena. And yeah, in the world of Rin-ne, that would do it.
>>282170575Not cased closed this time, good job, VIZ. Also, in case you're curious, Rinne is calling Ichigo おふくろ (ofukuro) which means as expected, "mom".
>>282170640!
>>282170441>the thirty-fifth volume of Rin-ne.we'll be seven-eighths of the way there>>282170498>Q: What's your favorite instant food?>A: Lately, it's frozen dandan noodles without soup.>dandan noodlesit has a wikipedia page>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dandan_noodlesit's chinese
>>282170655Japanese for gingerbread house is apparently おかしの家 (okashi no ie), so something like "sweets house" or "candy house". And yes, the sign in the corner was redrawn. It originally said "ご自由にお食べください" (go jiyū ni o tabe kudasai). Most places seem to translate it to "Please help yourself" but VIZ seemed to go with a more literal translation here.
>>282170793Hm...
>>282170805Fun summer outfit.
>>282170833Heh, the munching Rokumon.
>>282170844VIZ went with astral rather than spirit. The birdlime was called 霊的トリモチ (reiteki torimochi) in Japanese.
>>282171031Shoma! No!
>>282171042ひまわりの妖精 (himawari no yōsei) for the sunflower fairy. Means what it says. I have no idea what's going on.
>>282171141
>>282171152Where could it beeee?
>>282171196
>>282171215Entrapment charms were 封印の札 (fūin no fuda) in Japanese. So, yeah, fuda, as in the paper charm/tag/talisman things.
>>282171269End of chapter. Cute! Also, make sure you be careful outside. Lots of heatstroke in these summer chapters. Also, the date is the publication date.
August 24th, 2016. Author's note:"Q: August 3rd is Adventurer's Day. Is there a place or country you would like to go adventuring?A: I want to climb the pyramids in Mexico one more time."
>>282171367海女 (ama) literally means "sea woman". VIZ has you covered, but yeah, an interesting historical tradition.
>>282171496
>>282171554I kind of want to try it. I'll admit, I'm not huge on a lot of this sort of seafood, but I like scallops, clam in some dishes and fried oysters.
>>282171367>Q: August 3rd is Adventurer's Day. Is there a place or country you would like to go adventuring?>A: I want to climb the pyramids in Mexico one more time.go for it rumiko, i believe in you i wonder which ones she went to though? her comment about being able to see a jungle from atop a pyramid makes me think she went to southern mexico, maybe some mayan ones
>>282171608Sakura Mamiya remembered. Good job.
>>282171620Sporting a different look today.>>282171617Surely she mentions it in one of the interviews on the topic, right? I don't know though.
>>282171658
>>282171675密漁 (mitsuryō). It does mean poaching. I don't know if this is accommodating younger readers or if it is a more obscure term in Japanese or if Rumiko is just making a joke explaining something relatively banal.
>>282171714Rokumon trusts him.
>>282171743In Japanese, the distinction being made here is 魔法のウニライス (mahō no uniraisu) rather than ウニ丼 (unidonburi). 丼 refers to either a bowl or in this context, a bowl of rice with food on top.
>>282171838Figures. But yeah, classic maid cafe stuff.
>>282171870Been a bit since she's actually done this sort of thing. At least on panel.
>>282171901Magic ketchup is 魔法のケチャップ (mahō no kechappu) in Japanese. The bottle's text was written in English in the original panel as well (resembles a Heinz one pretty closely). The CM on the stomach appears to just mean "commercial" as Renge referred to it as "ウニライスCM" with the Furigana シーエム for the last part. So, just sea urchin commercial.
>>282171973Gets pretty serious when she pulls this sort of stunt.
>>282171994Well, it worked.
>>282172008I think I haven't had a chance to post the bit about Kain from the 2018 interview with Rumiko Takahashi:"In some way, I created this character to be Rinne’s rival or someone who opposed him, but due to some reasons at work, the idea of him being a lower-ranked public worker took shape. But, on the contrary, thanks to that reason it was fun to draw him. Kain’s not a really cool type, but I think that’s rather good."
>>282172064Rinne's ethical framework is not at the extremes.
>>282172085End of chapter. As we've come to expect from Renge.
>>282170531>it was so cheapi wonder why>both her current parents work so they can't take her anywhere for summer breakare her current parents aware that she's hanging out with high schoolers?
Original title was 粉もんの悲劇. VIZ seems to have done a pragmatic localization rather than a direct translation. Both Google and Furinkan went with "The Flour Tragedy". 粉もん (konamon) refers to food made from flour (especially okonomiyaki and takoyaki) per a Japanese dictionary. So, VIZ decided talking about flour would be confusing and referred to it specifically being festival foods, which is what it is referring to in context. August 31st, 2016. Author's note:"Q: Please let me know if there are any "useful goods" that you like.A: Clothespins."
>>282172345VIZ added the little bit about it being traditional, which I feel is a little weird given that Sakura Mamiya is Japanese and all but whatever. She just said she went to a お祭り (omatsuri) which just means festival.>>282172173Yeah, presumably. I don't know how it went down.
>>282170531I wonder if Ichigo told her parents about her circumstances... Probably best not to I suppose, but also probably the kind of thing they should know really.
>>282172424Tsubasa referred to guests being "怪異に襲わ" (kaii ni osowa) which seems to translate to either "strangely attacked" or "attacked by a monster". 怪異 just means "weird", "monstrous" or "strange". So, yeah, phantom is a bit less vague, but VIZ tried to make it not very clear.
>>282172527I have had this and it is great. It also comes up a lot. Especially in Ranma 1/2.>>282172514I would hope not, I feel it would mess them up a bit. Surely there's a white lie they could've thought of.
>>282172585Tsubasa's intentions seem pretty transparent here.
>>282172615Gross.
>>282171554Sakura's swimsuits are sometimes bolder than I'd expect from her tbqh
>>282171973Its been quite a while, at least ten volumes, since we got the reminder that Renge literally fucking kills people. I thought that Rumiko might have tried to backtrack on it.
>>282170575>Once I couldn't get out for three daysdo you think he ate sunflower seeds to survive?>>282170640>Rinne is calling Ichigo おふくろ (ofukuro) which means as expected, "mom"it's kind of a rough way to say "mom" I thinkI know inuyasha uses that when referring to his mom>>282170793>random gingerbread house appears in a sunflower field >>let's rest in here for a little while miroku-jr-kun...>>282170805straight up getting willy wonka'd out there lol>I don't sense any ill intent>Well, I do!lmao
>>282172622Both times the sauce was referred to as just ソース (soosu) but VIZ probably was right to translate it as Worcestershire sauce since dictionaries seem to specify that the term especially refers to Worcestershire sauce. Japanese people will usually use たれ (tare) for their sauces.
>>282172840Fortunately, as they could see what was happening, they're okay. Oh and I want to mention that okonomiyaki is made with Worcestershire sauce. I think they sometimes add a bit more to it, but yeah.>>282172801In my mind, she hasn't successfully done it since moving in since Rinne's around to stop it, but it could be either way.
>>282171141>I have no idea what's going on.this is some willy wonka × wizard of oz type shit >>282171215It's Aliiiivvvee!!!>>282171306>open-air school like summer camp?>drawing journal why is TJ (age 16) an actual stick figure lol
>>282172955霊縛しめ縄, spirit binding shimenawa as before. It was translated as "Ghost-Nabbing Sacred Rope" in a previous chapter as well. We've talked at length about shimenawa before. It is used in Shinto.
>>282173018Gotcha!>>282173013林間学校 (rinkan gakkō, forest school) apparently. I didn't think to look it up. It is like a summer camp or a field trip sort of thing.
>>282173101Pretty straightforward.
>>282173175Tartar sauce is タルタルソース (tarutarusōsu) in Japanese, so they specify it there. しょう油 (shōyu) for onions sauce.
>>282173252His name was spelled 佐藤 on the last page, which is a common name. Here, Sakura Mamiya says サトウ in Katakana. 砂糖 is how you write sato as in sugar in Kanji.
>>282173351Oh no.
>>282173372
>>282173383That's a lot of sauce. And yeah, this plan was flawed.
>>282173427
>>282173441End of chapter. Very effective, Rinne. Also, gross.
Original title is ホラ太郎のお話し (Hora Tarō no ohanashi). ホラ太郎 being a proper noun means VIZ left it untranslated. -太郎 is a common suffix for names and means strong, heroic, masculine (though I've also heard it translated as boy). Momotarō, Urashima Tarō and Kintarō are all heroes from Japanese fairy tales that use this suffix in their name. September 7th, 2016. Author's note:"Q: I'm very sad that summer vacation is over. How can I release some tension?A: Wait for winter break."
>>282173558I wonder how many of these setup pages start with the end of summer break.
>>282173558>September 7th, 2016.so close! well happy 9th anniversary to chapter 342
>>282173625大洞ユウヤ with the Furigana おおはら for the first bit in Japanese. No clue if there's a pun.
>>282173720...
>>282173736宮毛ミユキ with the Furigana みやげ for the initial bit. As VIZ explained (appreciate having an explanation this time) みやげ (miyage) means souvenirs.
>>282173772
>>282173784Hmm.
>>282173798ホラ吹き (horafuki) can be translated as liar, but it also means a big mouth, braggart, blowhard, etc. Fuki's name was written like フキ in Japanese.
>>282173897Not much of a story.
>>282173912The first speech bubble was a very big ブス!! (which means ugly but usually refers to ugly women specifically). Oh, also I want to clarify that the keychain had HORA written with English letters in the original panels as well.
>>282173942
>>282173951空太郎 with the Furigana そらたろう for the name.
>>282173978
>>282173992Didn't really ask for it.
>>282174098We've seen this combination before. 幻夜灯 (illusionary lantern) and 走馬灯 (rotating lantern). Illusionary seems to be able to create desires while revolving is the one that lets you see flashbacks (based on a reference to an expression referring to seeing your life flash before your eyes).Last time VIZ localized it as revolving lantern. Whatever.
>>282174130Hm...
>>282174195Ah. Neither of the men pretending to be the statue after all.
>>282174203End of chapter. Sorry, Sorataro. No scheming son of a rich man ruined your chances at marriage.
Not sure if the stuff in the back here means anything. 罪の木 (tsumi no ki) is the original title. September 14th, 2016. Author's note:"Q: Is there a smartphone app that you open unconsciously?A: Pro-baseball breaking news."
>>282174336
>>282174359Garden was written in English in the original panel as well.
>>282174374Probably should've brought Rokumon with you.
>>282174402Admittedly, I thought this would be Rokumon messing it up. Team effort.
>>282174411
>>282174420How odd.
>>282174429Tsubasa referred to him as サエない (saenai) which means unappealing, dull, boring, uninteresting.
>>282174507Yup, 弁当 (bento).
>>282174528Naturally.
>>282174555
>>282174568Man, the lunch being gone is really insult to injury.
>>282174578Sakura Mamiya's line in the second panel originally was "ええ!? 意外。" Given the ?! I probably would've translated it like VIZ did too, but maybe she was intended to actually agree with Annette? I'm not sure.
>>282171554>what do you make of the pot part?to collect sea urchin ghosts duh>>282171608living sea urchins too i guess>but I like scallops, clam in some dishes and fried oysters.that's the meat of the animal thoughi've seen pics and videos, sea urchins seem to have no meatit's just water and their gonadswhy are they 85% gonad where are there other organs do they even have any>>282171658>signs: sea urchin rice, sea urchin, sea urchin ice cream>sea urchin ice creamnow that's just going too far
>>282174628
>>282174659生霊 again. Disembodied spirits is a practical translation, but it more literally translates to living spirits (ie. the spirits of a living person).>>282174657There was sea urchin shaved ice in UY. It was not very good.
>>282174689Got pretty abstract in some of these.
>>282174705
>>282174723End of chapter. Whoops.
September 21st, 2016. Author's note:"Q: For September 20th through the 26th, is there an animal you would like to meet for Be Kind to Animals Week?A: A panda."
>>282174740Things are somewhat dire.
>>282174811All dressed up.
>>282174823
>>282174835Sorry, Tsubasa.
>>282174889Rinne is innocent.
>>282174912ヒモ (himo) for the third time this manga. As before, it refers to a string but can also refer to either a pimp or a man who is financially dependent on a woman (such as someone being pimped out). The last two times, VIZ localized it as Sakura Mamiya suggesting that Ageha was Rinne's pimp and Anju suggesting that Sakura Mamiya was Rinne's pimp. I assume in this case, the sinner was the pimp himself. I will say, I am just going to assume that ヒモ does not sound nearly as salacious in Japanese as the word pimp does in English.
>>282175008
>>282175016Shimenawa again.
>>282175063Didn't think this through really.
>>282171743>Rokumon trusts him.trusts him to play along>>282171838i thought the play was that uniraisu kind of sounds like "on rice" but i see, i see>pure white cool rice>cold cooked ricethat sounds mid>>282171870hey it's the pic furinkan uses in their character list!>now, to cast the magic spell>ketchupi'm somewhat of a ketchupfag myself but come on now...>>282171901wait if she took their souls then how are they still walking?>>282171973oh she programmed them to advertise
>>282175071What an entrance.
>>282175136Worth a shot. Information has value.>>282175117The ketchup magic spell seems to be the thing to do with omurice at maid cafes.
>>282175155...
>>282175176
>>282175221Sakura Mamiya's line here seems translated accurately, but here it is for reference in Japanese: "あんまり気持ちのいいお金じゃないし..."
>>282171994oh no, one of many of rinne's weaknesses!!>>282172008my god ageha and oboro killed them...>>282172064>ENTER KAIN with a nice starfish+jellyfish shirt>>282172085>rinne, you're awakethe smell of cold hard cash revived him the way smelling salts would wake people who fainted>i'll only take it if renge insists i dohe says loudly wink wink nudge nudge>>282172129that's one hell of a "fuck you" from renge>it's cold rice... i'm used to the tasteno electricity at home eh...>they don't have the magic ketchup on topoh sakura...>the safe apparently got caught in a fisherman's netlucky guy
>>282175259Sigh...
>>282175264Aw...
>>282175276End of chapter! Hahahaha. At least she really wanted to do the same thing. And that explains where that money came from, since Rinne presumably had zilch.
This cover was originally full color.Furinkan notes that: "Takahashi mentions this chapter in an interview she gave in 2019. It is also mentioned in an interview with her editors from 2024."I actually haven't read the 2024 interview. I should read that. I did know she mentioned it in the long interview. I'll post the relevant section after the dump.September 28th, 2016. Author's note:"Q: Is there any food you couldn't eat as a child that you like now?A: Namasu."
>>282175830Skipped the spacer.
>>282175840We got a guy doing the comedy routine that Japan has by painting a goofy face on his belly and belly dancing. And also a bunch of ties wrapped around heads, so drunk salaryman stereotype. And all kinds of other cliche ghosts. Including the scary head!
>>282175991封印南京錠 (fūin nankinjō) which does mean sealing padlock.
>>282176165
>>282176172Cuties.
>>282176183Still a lot of variety in ghosts.
>>282176199Ichigo's strawberry shirt was written in English in the original panel as well.
>>282173372Ah yeah that would suck. >>282174130>>282174195Its kinda interesting when the are others around to see the spirit stuff
>>282176219She's okay, yeah?
>>282176242In Japanese, the caption said なかなか連絡がとれないのだ (nakanaka renraku ga torenai noda) which suggests to me that it is difficult to get in touch with him rather than Otome deliberately avoiding it.
>>282172345>festival food fiascothat alliteration!>The Flour Tragedythe tragedy of F>>282172424>he begged me to comewell someone's going to be bait>>282172615and there it issneaky miroku jr kukukuku>>282173018it's licking the sauce off of other foods too? that fiend!>>282173101you could say that ghost islost in the sauce
>>282176273As before, Also, Otome called him パパ in Japanese. "Papa", essentially. I assume this is referring to his role in the family, as Japanese and other languages seem to do that sometimes. Honey is a pragmatic translation (it was darling last time). Oh and Sakura Mamiya referred to him by name rather than just saying Rokudo's father or something.
>>282176331
>>282174402>>282174411nooooo Whenever there's an objects with the disclaimer that it can't get wet no matter what you should assume its going to get wet
>>282176341Sacred sake is 神酒を (omiki) in Japanese. It is offered to gods in Japanese Shinto, it seems. The magic words they chanted were 言霊 (kotodama), which refers to the spirit of words.
>>282175008Pimp really does rather fit the situation though, honestly seems a lot more fitting.
>>282176418法事 (hōji) was the memorial service in question. I believe it is Buddhist.
>>282176446This place does look nice.
>>282176461Sleepy...
>>282176469Oh the caption for the plastic kiddie cup was タッパー (tappā), as in tupperware. I guess that's a reasonable way to describe it in Japanese. VIZ's translation is more accurate in context. The robes say the name of the inn, by the way. とりはだ.
>>282176513
>>282176533End of chapter. Huzzah. Oh, I'm going to use this opportunity to post Rumiko Takahashi's comment regarding Sabato in the 2018 interview:"I created him to be the antithesis of Rinne. Sabato was definitely an “evil” character; however, while I was drawing him, I realized that he wasn’t at all aware of doing evil things. So I made him a character who was someone to be regarded and easy to become attached to. Really, he can’t cross that ultimate line."So, as we get a nice little family moment, we can sort of see the little bit of heart he has.
>>282176513Uh, Viz seems to have gotten super confused there in that case, Tupperware is referring to Rokumon putting the food away ton take homeThe cup doesn't even make sense they all have the same cup
Original title was 友情マスター (yūjō masutā), where マスター is obviously a loanword from the English word "master".Furinkan notes that "Kyokai no RINNE did not run in Shonen Sunday 2016 vol. 46 the following week." So, there'll be a jump in the dates.October 5th, 2016. Author's note:"Q: Please tell us if you ever made an impulse buy and regretted it?A: Some clothes that were on sale for a limited time."
>>282176594Furinkan notes that: "Yosono (四祖野) is written with the kanji for "four ancestor fields". The name has no particular meaning but was previously referenced in chapter 268." But they're wrong! It is a joke because as VIZ pointed out in chapter 268: If you write Yoso no like 他所 の, it means "somewhere else".Boy's name is 西古里 with the Furigana にしこり. にしこり appears to mean "lump". >>282176585Oh, you're right. And here I am propagating the mistake and missing the joke. Good catch.
>>282176664No zooom. She must've zooomed earlier.
>>282176708
>>282170498Very summery feel
>>282176725待岡 with the Furigana まつおか. I don't know if there's a pun.
>>282176805
>>282176820Hmmm...
>>282176833
>>282176881To be honest, I wouldn't have expected the paintball or the spirit's essence to keep track of that sort of thing.
>>282176900This really is an absurd page.
>>282176909
>>282176953So, VIZ decided not to just put "bros before hoes" in their localization of a Rumiko Takahashi manga. But they more or less did. Admittedly, Matsugo's line was similarly over the top. He said 女子は邪魔だから (joshi wa jamadakara) in big writing which appears to mean "Because girls are a nuisance."
>>282177030...
>>282177042Sigh...
>>282173252>しょう油 (shōyu) for onions sauce.i was about to say "it's made of onions?" but then i remembered that La Soya (actual spanish name for that) is a bad word here >>282173372>suddenly i was not having a good timeheh uh, i mean... oof>>282173383i guess the solo people wouldn't have had someone else to cast blame on? besides the worker obviously, but maybe they reasoned to themselves that the worker misunderstood without sauce or something>>282173427he's a sauce manbut hey that leaves more food for rinne and rokumon!>>282173441>the girl he loved disparaged the sauce he lovedtragic pottery
>>282177061!
>>282177135That fourth panel is pretty great for how brief it is. Matsugo's line was "だが…もう少しジラした方が..." (daga… mōsukoshi jira shita kata ga). VIZ did fine, but Google Translate's suggestion made me laugh: "But... I think it would be better to tease him a little more...". The book was labeled 彼の心子つかむ技 (Kare no Shinko tsukamu waza). Google Translate is failing me a bit, but for 心子つかむ技 they suggest "Techniques to capture hearts and minds" and 彼の they suggest "his". VIZ's choice of translation seems accurate.
>>282173453>but now i can't really tell how it tastes...well that's what happens when you eat so much of one thing>still only licking the sauce?do you think rinne and rokumon sucked it up and ate the food anyway?>>282173625>i did>i didn'theh>>282173720oh is that his curse then?>>282173736>i'll pay you anything!>i'm listeninglove doctor rinne is in
>>282177251Sakura Mamiya's line could probably use an exclamation point in English. It didn't have one in Japanese, so I get why they skipped it, but it reads wrong.
>>282177280End of chapter. A bit cruel.
Original title is 恵比寿様風. Ebisu is a proper noun and I'm sure the chapter will explain it a bit, if not I'll cover it. Google Translate suggested "Ebisu-style" which made me laugh.October 19th, 2016. Author's note:"Q: Please tell us what Japanese words you think are beautiful and why.A: "Itadakimasu." It's a word of thanks."
>>282177355Cute. Though given how Sakaki chapters go, this probably won't turn out well.
>>282177392Fortunately, Rumiko has me covered. Also, the caption originally said "この世の豆知識". この世 (konoyo) means "this world". This is a direct counterpart to a あの世 (anoyo), which means "the other world" and refers to the afterlife both in this series and in general. I guess VIZ felt it would be confusing for something like this where English-speaking audiences have no idea who he is.

Oh, a full on Halloween chapter? We had something sort of close before but it was school festival themed. With a pumpkin headed damashigami. Anyway, this chapter's name is 精霊召喚 (seirei shōkan) originally. 精霊 can mean spirit, but it can also be used as a translation of the Western word "elemental" (per Japanese Wikipedia), so I think VIZ got that in this context, elemental is more accurate. October 26th, 2016. Author's note:"Q: What was one word written by your teachers frequently on your report cards?A: I feel like my school wasn't special..."
>>282178030I love Halloween.
>>282178038I'll point out any pop culture costumes I recognize, but it seems Rumiko or her assistants went with relatively straightforward costumes for the background characters.
>>282178065Hat is all jaunty.

>>282178095Same creatures as the chapter title, of course.
>>282178145
>>282178152心霊写真 (shinrei shashin) for the bottom left caption which means "spirit photograph". So selfie was just VIZ having a bit of fun.
>>282178191
>>282178274VIZ missed the period in the first panel. Editors... Anyway, these are all loanwords and VIZ translated it pretty directly. The word dwarf on this page was translated from こび (kobi). These are the four main elementals per Paracelsus's book in the 16th century.
>>282178384Unfortunately, the photo appears to have a chochin obake (提灯お化け), a haunted paper lantern and a jack o'lantern. Appropriate.
>>282178417Lots of money to be made on Halloween. This game is yo-yo fishing (ヨーヨー釣り) and the balloons have a bit of water inside. Though Renge just asked if anyone wanted to fish balloons. And yes, selfie here was another VIZ addition, the boy just asked for a photo together.
>>282178512Here we have Japanese style 人魚 (ningyo), human-fish. Often translated as mermaids, but these depictions match the mythology a bit better. We even have the mummified ones that some temples have. The one with the horns appears to be specifically from a woodblock called 人魚図。一名海雷 (Ningyo no zu. Ichimei, Kairai).
>>282178556地縛霊 (jibakurei) means earthbound spirit and refers to a ghost tied to a specific physical location. I do find it funny that they appear to be Westerners though given the other elementals.
>>282178603The word for the common cold is 風邪. The word for wind is 風. Both are kaze.
>>282178642Running gag with selfies continues (just photos in the original panels).
>>282178669End of chapter, end of volume. Sakura Mamiya enjoyed the compliment. Her line in Japanese was the ever so succinct "今?!" >>282183403>>282170498Yuji Yokoyama drew from a fair bit of series as well. Including the rather obscure Talent Show Judge from Chapter 215 of Urusei Yatsura. I am not familiar with his work, but Furinkan lists Sunday Hi Kagaku Kenkyujo as the series of his that was running at the time though googling that does not lead to any other results than the Furinkan page in question. His Japanese wikipedia page seems to suggest that this was サンデー非科学研究所. His ongoing series is Tokachi Hitoribocchi Nōen, which does have a Wikipedia page in English.

Kazuhiro Fujita who at the time was working on Sōbōtei Kowasubeshi (双亡亭壊すべし) created this lovely tribute to some of the horror works Rumiko Takahashi had in Rumic World 1 from the 80s. We have When My Eyes Got Wings (闇をかけるまなざし), Sleep and Forget (忘れて眠れ) and Laughing Target (笑う標的). I love these stories so it is great to see them get some love.
>>282175830Here is that segment of the 2019 interview on the subject:"[Q:] On the other hand, Tamako's son, (Rinne's father) Sabato, is also a strong character. They say he's good-looking yet garbage (laughs). However, I was still impressed by the great character development that made it hard to completely hate him.Takahashi: What he's doing is really trashy (laughs). But I had a lot of fun drawing that scumbag. There aren't many villains or enemy characters in Kyokai no RINNE, so I had no choice but to have Sabato play that role.[Q:] Also, as I was reading the story, I was wondering why Rinne's mother didn't appear, but she makes an impactful appearance towards the end.Takahashi: As for Rinne's mother, I had been thinking about bringing her into the story, but I had a hard time finalizing her character, and she ended up appearing only at the end of the story. When I came up with the idea of her being reincarnated and being younger than Rinne, I thought I had done it (laughs). As you know, this family usually lives separately, but in one of the last chapters, there was a story about a family trip that ended up happening, albeit by accident."
>>282175830>>282185966And the section from the editor interview in 2024:"[Q:] Sabato, the father of Rinne Rokudo, the main character in Kyokai no RINNE is also a scoundrel, and even Takahashi-sensei herself calls him "a real scum" (from "Rumiko Takahashi Book"), but he's somehow unbearable. While he is a scoundrel who co-signs his son on his debts, flirts with women, and commits fraud, he is also a man with a good heart who has been secretly searching for his wife, who suddenly disappeared."Moriwaki: I believe that every villain has the conscience of his creator, Takahashi-sensei, running through his veins. At the end of RINNE, there is a story where the Rokudo family, who had been separated, and the heroine Sakura Mamiya somehow come together at a hot spring ("Inn of Memories"). That chapter is so heartwarming, I love it. Takahashi-sensei was also happy and said, "I'm glad they were able to go on a family trip.""Per Furinkan: "Kento Moriwaki (森脇健人) was the final editor on Kyokai no RINNE and the first editor on MAO. He is also the editor responsible for getting Rumiko Takahashi to join Twitter. "I find it funny how both interviewers emphasized that Sabato may be awful, but he's not all that bad. Also, I think the might've mistranslated the interviewer's first sentence there.
Interesting bit from that editor interview in 2014:"Moriwaki: Okamoto wanted to become a manga editor because of Inuyasha.Okamoto: When I was in elementary school, I lived in a rural town in America, and my classmate asked me things like, "Do Japanese people eat bugs?" "Do Japanese people spend their time naked?" No matter how much I tried to argue with her, she wouldn't listen to me, but as soon as she fell in love with Inuyasha, she said, "I'm definitely going to move to Japan!"I was shocked to learn that interesting manga transcends racial barriers and national borders and touches the heart. I also wanted to be involved with a work that has overwhelming power and captivates the world on a par with Inuyasha."Wonder where it was.
