What do you think of TL Notes? Have they gotten better over the years? Watching old fansubs/old official subs and seeing stuff like this makes me smile a little bit.
>>282172826I miss them, I miss them a lot. I hate how new translations try to interpret instead of translate
>>282174700soon AI will literally translate better than tranny translators, im running my own translation AI atm and its nearly good as chrunchyroll's if i could rent one of those AI gpus i coud train it even better
>>282174864that's not a good thing anon...
>>282172826Gratitude to who?God?But japs are atheists.
I love TL notes for explaining shit or jokes that would require knowing deep japanese culture, history or mysticism or similar. But don't give me the basic ass shit like what itadakimasu is, or honorifics, etcI'd rather have a translation with a TL note to explain context or the situation rather than a wacky localization.
>>282175401To food.Also, gods.But not God.
>>282174700I get it from the screen clutter, but I really do miss stuff like this. Even if it's something I know from many, many years of watching anime, it's kind of cute to be reminded that I likely learned something about Japanese culture off of stuff like this back in the 00's. >>282175613You gotta remember that this anime came out in 2004(?) and was subbed in 2006. The amount of weebs was much, much smaller and there were a lot of young guys who might not have known this stuff. How do you know unless you look it up or are taught with something like this?
>>282175651Oh I'm aware that a lot of old fansubs did this, I wouldn't mind it much in those but don't fucking explain itadakimasu or honorifics in recent anime, at this point you might as well google and learn about it, it takes like 5 minutes. Zetsubou sensei's explained all honorifics in like 2 manga pages, it's not that hard.
>>282172826Eat a duck I must?
>>282172826I want them back. You could learn a lot from them and some were even funny.
>>282172826I'm just wondering how we got to the point where teaching culture is seen as worse than awkward writing that doesn't really make sense.
>>282175651>there were a lot of young guys who might not have known this stuff. There are a lot of guys NOW that don't know this stuff because they all watch modern subs that "localize" it into something random they probably don't even recognize as the same phrase.
>>282172826They are a true lost art. I wouldn't say they have gotten better over the years, it's more like back when they seemed to be the norm everyone used them to explain whatever tidbit they thought was necessary, some of it was some extremely simple stuff like "itadakimasu" like you were reading that from a studybook for Japanese language and then there were the ones that had TL notes for some more obscure thing like wordplay that you might miss out on if you don't know the language. Not to mention the troll TL notes. These days though it feels like that things have changed, it's not that rare for me to watch some new series that some group subbed and there are parts where instead of translating what was said in JP, the group just slapped in something that is pretty close to it but not exactly. And sometimes they have stuff for some throw-away lines that don't match at all what was said, but I guess they figured that it was not important enough to translate accurately. Not that that makes it acceptable of course.
I always liked them particularly when they were deeper cuts to things like>the shounenshit move is a reference to a famous 12th century warrior monkShit I'd never work out on my own.
>>282172826I dont think of them
>>282172826it had an extremely important role for the export of Japanese culture
>>282174864Hey anon, could you email me and tell me about this? I'm interested in AI fansubs and have been wanting to see them take off. ayachinene@mail.com>>282175223>AI is... le badBrainwashed Luddite NPC spotted.
>>282172826Pani Poni has the best system. Several levels of TL notes using multiple alternative subs. I basically had to watch each episode twice.
>>282172826Crunchyroll/Netflix's commercial subtitles don't include TL notes anymore because they adhere to professional standards for subtitling. It's the same reason you don't see them in movies in theaters... the goal is to maintain a seamless, non-intrusive viewing experience.
>>282172826TL note are an important tool when translating untranslatable things like slang or words without an english equivalent and I prefer them to having subtitles be butchered with english slangUnfortunately official translations view TL notes as unacceptable
AI absolutely won't do hobbyist TN notes, it will be trained on streaming service troonslations and that's what it will do.
>character's name is Kafuka>always subbed as Kafkabut they're Japanese, not Austrian
