The other day I saw a thread here about video player and many of the comments were praising the shit of mpv.
Since in my anine library i have videos that range the 480p-1080p and with the promises that can enhance their quality with mpv i decided to download
The thing is that i created the fucking mpv.conf file with the video settings inside and ithey dont have effect, i put that file on the appdata folder on the mpv_config folder and nothing worked.
I followed all the instructions, download the portable, extract, install.bat... and nothing
And in internet cant find any info, seems that its a niche play after all
Should i stick on vlc?

vo=gpu-next
profile=gpu-hq
hwdec=auto-safe
scale=spline36
cscale=spline36
dscale=mitchell
deband=yes
deband-grain=4
saturation=1.15

Thats what i paste on the mpv.conf file

If you installed mpv as portable then the mpv.conf needs to be in the install folder.

>>
>>282181854
should i drop it in the extracted folder?
>>

no you should stick with mpv, it's made by autistic transgenders who are obsessed with video transcoding (and subtitles). vlc can't compete. literally just look at all the anime girl pfps on the git repo. says it all really.
>>
>>282181812
Is potplayer better than mpv? Chatgpt told me that btw
>>

It just werks. Even heavy films run perfectly on my crappy laptop. I’ve never once had problems with it processing files or throwing errors in years.

just play the animes with bilinear filter and alt vsync for best compat and smoothness. grain is gay.

Yes. That's what the install folder is.

I'll second that potplayer recommendation, no issues and when everyone else is talking about the subs having signs being out of sync it looks perfect.

If mpv setup is really difficult, MPV.com is a more friendly version, and Seed of Might has a prebuilt one that just werks.

The mpv portable version only needs to be unzipped. No installation needed. It's simpler. Also, codec packs always cause problems because they're system-wide plugins.

vlc supports lanczos scaling which is about as good as it gets with traditional scaling algorithms, it's also the default in mpv
spline36 is almost the exact same as lanczos and indistinguishable from it in practice, but it makes autists feel special for some reason
ewa_lanczosharp is pretty much a meme, it's almost never appreciably better than lanczos (or spline36) and way more computationally expensive

You don't really need to tinker with mpv beyond setting it to not close when the video ends and setting a screenshot folder.
You just figure things you want to do by yourself though. For instance, I wanted to decrease the size of the video inside the window because when I'm eating, my face is closer to the monitor. Eventually I found out I could add the following shortcuts to input.conf:

Alt+- add video-zoom -0.1
Alt+= add video-zoom 0.1

Do I need it? No. But it's neat to have it and I just needed to Google for a solution. Nowadays you can also use an AI to spoonfeed you quicker.

Any good way to upscale old 480p anime up to 720p or 1080p?

The only time I used MPV was because I was learning Japanese and there was a script to make flashcards with it.
Now that I don't need it I've gone back tp mpc-hc because it's comfy.

Enhancing the "quality" of a video with some stupid settings is such a snake oil. I'm glad I grew out of this phase and just enjoy my shit now instead of tinkering and comparing for hours.
>>
profile=high-quality
vo=gpu-next
video-sync=display-resample
interpolation=yes

Is this good enough for anime?
>>
This is literally all I configured for mpv. Apart from that I'm using that one webm-making script that works with Shift + W and the Anime4K shader pack (it even comes with presets for anime that is natively 1080p, 720p or 480p and you can easily switch between them/disable it whenever).

>loop-playlist=inf
Obviously so it stops closing when the file ends
>WHEEL_UP seek 10
>WHEEL_DOWN seek -10
The default seeking is too slow and I have a good mouse where I have a lot of fine control with the wheel
>--ontop
Self-explanatory.

I don't need anything else.

>>

Kodi and Jellyfin are two completely different classes of software
>>
>>282181797
I understand that mpv can be challenging. But if this kind of software is impenetrable to you, I don't see why you would complain about as if it was the software's fault. It's my primary player and I love it dearly. Is it perfect? Probably not. Certainly it isn't a one size fits all. But I love how it works, I love the design and I love working with it via keyboard shortcuts. Being able to configure a gamepad as a remote for mpv is such a great thing.
>>
>>282181797
Wtf how do people struggle with MPV??? It's literally just download and run.
>>
>>282207515
It's an installer with extra steps (on Windows). Normaloids usually struggle with that kind of stuff. Also, the configuration file is very daunting for the uninitiated, and never mind setting up Lua scrips for MP4 captures or what have you.

Not unless there's lots of animation / effects on screen. For most powerpoint presentations reencode is indistinguishable from the full bloat stream rip.

This honestly looks really bad to me. It's like one of those anime edited clips with 60 fps nigger interpolation. Sharpening and smoothing out everything while rescaling everything to 2160p just makes the image look artificial and bad. Reminds me of that meme of people emulating retro games with supereagle, and I hope people eventually realise this is just a risible a thing.

Anon, you should configure your player to produce better screenshot names. This is what I use:

Exactly. People treat simple things like they're some Sisyphean tasks.
You have Google, Bing, ChatGPT, et al to query. You have the manual page that comes with it when it is installed via man. You have archwiki ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Mpv ) - you have the github page/manual (HTML) itself ( https://mpv.io/manual/master/ )... By no means is this list of help/resources exhaustive.
>>282200748
>>bash: $: command not found
You know what was meant. $ is PS1 indicator for terminal/tty that you're a normal user logged in and can start typing, the shell is ready for your input. It's the standard. Even in REPLs (if not $ then some other symbol).

No wonder the trannies are taking over. Can't be bothered to do basic shit.

A very cool real-time upscaling algorithm. I like how it makes lines thicker. I haven't updated Anime4k in long while, I wonder if the algorithm has gotten better? Before anyone bitches, no, it's not magic. Kare Kano will still look like dogshit. Works well with many things, mode B is a good balance (default binding is alt-[F1-F3] && there are other modes (A+A) to play with).
>>
>>282207878
Makes sense for seasonals. How about older shows or something you want to rewatch? What if you take a good encode of CSM and take a screenshot of this >>282202314 frame? How much difference will it make?
