Novels: word salads for hipsters
Manga: picture books for toddlers
Anime originals: aimless sakuga
Visual Novels: They get a pass (Just because of Fate and School days) but they are fundamentally brought down by being very setpiecey computer games and having to fit into a dating sim standard.

Light Novels: Where aspiring authors from all walks of life can pour their concept heavy ideas. The written prose format allows the story to have the highest degrees of freedom possible and the 'Light' aspect guides them into picking up the pace from volume 1.
That's why Light novelists rarely run into stalls or hiatus problems compared to mangakas and the resulting anime is better paced, thought-out and quite simply, superior.

You can only pick one among those girls, who would you choose?
For me it's best imouto Kirino.

Visual novels are the best medium by far and superior to Light Novels.
>They get a pass (Just because of Fate and School days)
lmao get some taste.

that's the most glaring example of being brought down by being a dating sim: guy runs into a problem and has to have a setpiece with each of the n dating sim options.

But you think School Days is a better example of a good vn?
>>
>>282185551
Not really, I just liked the anime a lot. I prefer Shiny Days
>>
When I read the Japanese text in the bottom right, it says that they drew their “waifu” character, so it’s probably not limited to light novels.
It also says there are a lot of tsundere characters and that it shows their personal preferences.
So, isn’t it likely to be Golden Darkness (Yami) from To Love-Ru?

>Visual Novels: [...] having to fit into a dating sim standard.
Dating Sim is a very specific genre of games that are like the Tokimeki Memorial series. Most visual novels are not dating sims, even if the MC ends up with a girl at the end.

Correct. I think he's referring to route-based VNs that are each accompanied by a heroine.

Yami > Brown Louise > Pink Taiga > Biribiri > Kirino
>>
>AI Nagi
I'm conflicted
>>
>>282186203
Both are overrated. I don't really get the appeal of visual novels or their adaptations in general when manga has so much less bloat and artificial route constraints.
>>
>>282185083
Anime is the best and is the most complete package as a medium.
>>
>>282185083
LN are literal slop as a medium, it’s telling that despite the world being filled with japanophiles you rarely get to see them sold outside Japan even though they’re much cheaper to distribute than manga.

They are unpopular because no one fucking reads and the best ones are naturally obsoleced by their anime adaptations.

To be honest the fact that people buy manga of adequately adapted anime is weird to me

>>
It's scares me that light novel adaptions are supposed to have good writing since they really haven't. They just have slightly better writing than the average mangaka can come up with
>>
>>282185083
i don't read japanese but translated LN are just bad novels. trite grammar, silly formatting, and of course the storylines are ridiculous cartoon stuff.
i'm willing to admit it's probably better in the original language.

On most cases we will never know, but there has to be a problem of untranslatability. Like the intellectual gap between reading material for teenagers and educated adults isn't as wide in English as it could be in Japanese where you have to learn new Kanji and readings for every damned word.

With Zero no Tsukaima, which is the one I know well the author went to college for humanities so of course he knew what good writing read like. But LNs are kinda just anime scripts waiting to be adapted so why would they make them unreadable to the target audience if the endgame is to launch a TV anime in the same tone
>>
>>282185336
All of the dating sim shit in S;G felt so artificial. Like they really just needed the MC to go on a date with every girl to go and resolve the plot of the story?

>>282185083

How to fuck do you guys not know who Yami is? She ain't even my favorite TLR girl, but she's iconic.
>>
>>282192069
If you didn't realize S;G was just poorly veiled haremshit from the beginning you fell for its ruse. The whole story is like that.
>>
>>282192273
Yami is not from a Light Novel.
