Using google trends analytics and filtering for north america only, searches relating to anime peaked in 2021, but any year in 2020s is higher than any year in 2010s.
When I was slowly getting into more into anime beyond dragon ball, SAO, FT and toonami (around 2016 to 2018) I remember seeing the annoying fbi memes over Dragon Maid and Made in Abyss I found them obnoxious. They've gotten way fucking worse. Videos used have the usual "FBI open up" and slightly older ones had a lot of "shes not real". I don't think they were ever really into anime beyond whatever was on netflix, but they've gotten worse in any discourse.
