The animation was nice, but everything else was dull and the best part of the movie (I'm talking about the fights) are ruined because of the flashbacks appearing EVERY TWO HITS. Akaza vs Giyu fight could've been fun, but the flashbacks ruined it. Watched it at a new theater in my area. Surprised to see about half of the seats filled since most subbed anime doesn't get a lot of viewers where I live. Action scenes were great but in a movie setting there were too many slam on the breaks moments that absolutely murdered pacing. As with everything else about Demon Slayer, it's carried solely by the animation and nothing else. That's the anime's only real strength and the reason for its popularity. This isn't even a movie, it's a string of episodes put together and given a theatrical release. I went in ready to see back to back fights and the defeat of Muzan, just to later find out there's multiple parts. So how the fuck is this movie 2 and a half hours but only manages to have 3 fights which are like 30 minutes combined? I'll tell you how: a whole lot of filler and padding in the form of flashbacks and repetitive boring dialogue. A film needs a clear beginning, middle, end, a self-contained arc, and a propelling purpose that isn't just setting up what's next. This movie doesn't care about that, nor does it try to bring in anyone outside its core audience by contextualizing what came before. Its only real aspiration is what a global theatrical release offers that streaming doesn’t: money. Shounen anime has a tendency to be tedious in its plotting by continously looping you into a cycle of action, dramatic pauses/speeches, detailed and convoluted flashback backstories and then back to the action. Everyone familiar with this structure has a limit to how much they can take before they lose patience. This one pushed the boundaries. During the last fight, as the film was taking us through the elongated history of the antagonist mid-fight, I had to remind myself where the fight was in the present when we eventually went back to it 20 min later. This one is a slog. The Insect Hashira was also the biggest letdown. I expected her to do something considering her popularity, but her first and only fight has her lose against some clown who wasn't even using his full power against her. Seriously, how did she even become a Hashira? She's a fraud and I am under the impression that a lot of Demon Slayer characters' appeal comes from the vibes and not their actual character.

It's the first and last time I'm watching Demon Slayer in the theaters.

Even when I first watched it, everything was coming off as a generic shounen and giving off those vibes, but after I got through a few episodes I would struggle to call it generic in the slightest even though all the window dressings are the same.I think what really sets Demon Slayer apart from everything else are a couple of attributes that are low key and can be found elsewhere, but put together make for an absolute titan.1. Power: Everything looks like it is immensely powerful and you can feel the weight of the hit.2. Pain: Everything also looks like it hurts like a bitch. You can see the effects that even just long term fights have on all the characters with slowing them down, draining their stamina, etc.3. Weight: You can feel the weight of the characters even doing normal things. You can hear their footsteps, you can see how much effort it's taking them to do minor things, and even moreso the major things. That makes the power and pain of what they do that more heightened.4. Tension: The demon's powers are often extremely powerful and the show makes it clear that it is willing to hurt and kill your favorite cast members, so when you feel all of the above, it matters way more.5. Intelligence: The demons aren't just threatening because they are powerful, they're a huge problem cause they also fight like main characters. You can genuinely see why upper ranks can easily kill people as strong as the Hashiras when they hide dozens of surprise powers and then hide their weaknesses. It's actually sheer dumb luck half of them get defeated at all.6. Sensible: A normal shounen would have the bad guy stay in a fortress the entire series. Tanjiro bumps into him on accident and the bad guy reacts by trying to get him murdered as fast as possible.

Saw it and this movie feels like it's trying to drive 20 over the speed limit in heavy traffic. Every moment it creates tension or excitement with its action, it kills every molecule of momentum with it's stupid backstory exposition dumps. That style of writing might work with anime and manga where it's naturally going to be a slower pace because it's episodic by nature, but in a movie it feels clunky and makes you forget what's even happening.The story also just does not work for a movie. You have three fight scenes with zero connective tissue at all beyond the general setting of the Infinity Castle. They kill of a semi-important character within the first thrid, but it gives no time for that moment to matter emotionally, she dies to get to another action scene for the next movie. The second fight could have some emotional weight behind it if they bothered to develop their dynamic at all, but instead they do the lazy writing this movie does constantly which is shove in flashbacks to try to get you to care.The best part of the movie is the last third, where the action ramps up and we have two characters fighting a somewhat developed villain (Akaza) we actually have some mild investment in because of previous arcs. But every time the action starts to ramp up, we get more flashbacks to kill the momentum. We get the resolution to the fight via random deus ex machina memories, and just as we think the fight gets a second wind we get another long ass flashback. The movie then has the audacity to try and squeeze an emotional moment with characters introduced just 15 minutes prior.This movie's redeeming qualities are its animation and action. It should not have been a movie at all, however, and I'm tired of every anime under the sun thinking that they can just turn one of their arcs into a movie without actually writing it the way a movie should be written. Also, fuck these people clapping and scrreaming in the audience because this movie doesn't deserve that.
