I used to feel like the deus ex machina at the end of Pain's Assault was veeery bad, but rereading everything more recently I actually enjoyed it. The Itachi and Pain storylines are part 2 at its best because it finally feels like we're going somewhere and we get a conclusion to Sasuke and Naruto's stories as they have been so far (Sasuke's desire for vengeance and Naruto's desire to be a hero). Naruto reasoning with his master's former pupil, winning him over and Nagato using his godlike powers to undo some of the damage isn't that bad. It's in line with the character and the themes.I think the real problem is the follow-up. While Sasuke's conversation with Obito is a character defining moment that changes Sasuke's motivations, attitudes and values for the rest of the series, Naruto's talk with Nagato just doesn't hold that weight. He stays the exact same character, his values never get seriously challenged and his promise to fulfill Jiraiya's prophecy feels cheap when we learn that he doesn't really have to choose between peace and destruction and peace actually just means defeating two schizophrenic Uchihas with undeniably and unquestionably evil doomsday plans.

I've read ahead this weekend since I had nothing better to do, and it's crazy that Grandma Chiyo gets a lot of focus in her introduction arc and even gets into a fight with a major antagonist of the arc while arguably more important characters like Sai and Yamato didn't get the same amount of focus during, and even after their introduction arc.
