The more I learn about the history of Japanese novels, the more I realize this series is Family Guy with book references instead of 80s TV shows.Absolutely EVERY part of it is a reference to a random popular Japanese sci-fi novel nobody in the west has heard of. Fairy Operation, Time Leap, Missing, Nerawareta Gakuen, Infinity Zero, the Nanase trilogy. Even a few that are sorta-kinda known in the west like Boogiepop and the Girl Who Leapt Through Time (the novel, not the anime movie with a similar plot). And these are just the ones that are blatant enough for me to connect. There are probably hundreds of other random nods to shit too obscure for anyone but Japanese sci-fi nerds to catch.
>>282235714I read hyperion because of it and I didn't regret it
>>282235714Gintama kinda falls into this.
>>282235806>>282235714Both are as unfunny as Family Guy too
>>282235714I recon Tanigawa spent lot of his days in libraries reading Japanese and outseas literature, from where he took influence to create Haruhi stories. When I watched the series and compared it to other alien, time slipper and ESPer animanga, Haruhi felt like a parody of those types of novels. But in a good way, where rather than mocking the plot elements, they're embraced. Kinda like what KonoSuba is to isekai
>>282235714I'm gonna need the full list of specific references so I can read it and be like "huh"
>>282237361>But in a good way, where rather than mocking the plot elements, they're embracedThat's the important part, yes, these elements are all part of an outlook on life rather than just for references sake
