Alright, it is Saturday and I am gonna post the thirty-sixth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is 境界のRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>282170441

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
>>
Cats! We didn't get Kuroboshi the first on the volume cover, but we got everyone else it seems.

Cute Black cats
>>
>>282239258
Ageha referred to this as a お友達との約束で (o tomodachi to no yakusoku de) which can be literally translated as "a promise to a friend" but refers to an appointment or scheduled meeting with a friend. Date works fine too, though it can be confusing if context doesn't make it clear.
>>
>>282239358
I mean, it is clear from context that Shoma is referring to his black cat by contract and not Ageha's, but I feel maybe VIZ could've gone with "I pay mine for it".
>>
>>282239408
Kain really does seem to have a soft spot for his useless black cat beyond just saving face when she could drag his reputation down.
>>
>>282239439
No points for guessing where this is going. Also, Rinne referred to Shoma here with お坊ちゃま (obotchama).
>>
>>282239471
>>
>>282239482
Sigh...
>>
>>282239493
The note had to be redrawn obviously. Approximately 20th is pretty funny. It seems to be translated directly though "place to the right" makes it sound like they aren't referring to the picture, which is what I assume they are doing. 右の場所にて (migi no basho nite) in Japanese. It might be deliberately ambiguous.
>>
>>282239655
>>
>>282239671
Lots of cats. I do sometimes wonder if they ever have events in full cat form like the first meeting we saw in the series. Probably just retconned now, but I do wish I could ask Rumiko for an in-universe explanation. I bet she could think of something.
>>
>>282239712
Left Rokudan (Sixth Level) untranslated again.
>>
>>282239725
The anime used this bit of calligraphy as décor for Tamako's room a lot given how often Furinkan seemed to mention it. Not sure if this is the first time we've seen it in the manga.
>>
>>282239762
That works.

>>
>>282239876
End of chapter. Rokumon's line here was ホントですか? (hontodesu ka?) so, "Really?" or "Is that true?" I might've gone with "Is it really?" but whatever. I shouldn't nitpick so much. Especially since I don't speak Japanese and VIZ's might be better.

招き猫 (maneki-neko, beckoning cat or lucky cat) being tossed here.

The first caption box says 黒猫タワー第一の関門 (kuro neko tawā dai ichi no kanmon). So, you might notice タワー being a loanword from the English word tower. Also, 関門 can mean barrier, hurdle, gate, etc. Hurdle seems right. The giant black cat was captioned as 大黒猫の間 (daikokuneko no ma). Not sure what the "no ma" does in this context and Google isn't helping.
>>
>>282240087
ボールの間 (bōru no ma). ボール being a loanword from the English ball.

Lot of Taisho outfits as you'd expect. Did the Taisho era have an affinity for checkerboard patterns? Not a lot of info about this on the English speaking web.
>>
>>282240253
>>
>>282240270
Kemari is apparently non-competitive by nature and is something like hacky-sack, where the goal is to keep the ball in the air without the use of your arms and hands. It was popular during the Heian and the Kamakura Period, so from 794-1185. I assume that's what is being referenced by the outfits here. Sugoroku is older, apparently introduced to Japan in the 6th century.

Per Furinkan: "Takahashi's fourth editor on Kyokai no RINNE, Kento Moriwaki, listed this chapter as his favorite chapter. " Furinkan also seemed to not realize that Kento Moriwaki is a woman. I'll post the relevant section of the interview where she discusses this chapter after the dump. Though "relevant" might be overstating it.

Given the speech bubble on the right side of the third panel is pointing to a cat, it probably should be "Gimme back the scythe" though I wouldn't put it past a cat to claim ownership.
>>
>>282239712
Rokumon is really the only black cat in the work without a full human form and doesn't wear clothes. Or I guess maybe he really is exceptionally young
>>
>>282240625
VIZ reversed Kain and Shoma's speech bubbles. This is the sort of stuff I consider unacceptable.
>>
>>282239762
No wait never mind kuroboshi also doesn't really have a full form and sansei is even younger (I assume)
>>
>>282240659
Rinne's attack here was 缶オープン (kan ōpun). So, yeah, both loanwords from English for "can open".
>>
>>282240694
The word gag gift appears to have been いやがらせグッズ (iyagarase guzzu). Or harassment goods. This doesn't seem to be an actual thing but maybe Google Lens is acting up? Not sure.

For reasons that are beyond me (maybe a joke about it being dangerous?), surströmming was censored as シュー◯ストレ◯ング rather than シュールストレミング (shūrusutoremingu). They'll get into what this is on the next page. It is a loanword from Swedish.
>>
>>282240253
Wow rude
She was a qt though
>>
>>282240836
The caption originally said "この世の豆知識". この世 (konoyo) means "this world". This is a direct counterpart to a あの世 (anoyo), which means "the other world" and refers to the afterlife both in this series and in general. This stuff gets fermented for six months.
>>
>>282240428
Kuromitsu and kurosu seem like they could be siblings
>>
>>282240892
End of chapter. You might find it curious to hear Miho referencing a skunk in a Japanese manga given that skunks do not live in Japan, but this is because this is a localized line. Her line originally referred to 異臭事件に巻きこまれたんだって (ishūjiken ni makikoma reta n datte) which Google Translate translated as "got caught in a foul smelling incident" which is honestly a pretty bizarre line. But that's what it was. I don't really know what Rumiko was going for.

Oh and Rokumon is the youngest. He's just a little more worldly than Sansei, I guess.
>>
>>282240904
I just realized they have kuro in their names too (alongside kuroboshi
The other black cats dont though. Now I wonder if there's supposed to be some common wordplay in Japanese among them all that I'm missing.
Roku(mon) might kuro backwards
I dunno about Suzu and Sansei and Tama. Well, I know Tama is a generic name for a cat.
>>
Per Furinkan: "This issue of Shonen Sunday has a giveaway of New Years cards. Participants could enter to win a chance at 3000 cards covering 29 series, all of which included original artwork, including Kyokai no RINNE." Furinkan doesn't have any scans of these since presumably, they're somewhat hard to get, but there is one Rin-ne one pictured on the cover of the magazine, so I'll post it later.

November 23rd, 2016. Author's note:
"Q: November 23rd is Labor/Thanksgiving Day. What kind of reward would you like to buy yourself?
A: A trip to the south island."

The holiday on the 23rd is 勤労感謝の日 (Kinrō Kansha no Hi) which apparently is just Labor Thanksgiving Day. This is the secular name of 新嘗祭 (Niiname-sai) which is what it was changed to after WWII per United States Authorities.

>>282241028
If there is a further connection, I don't see it. I know Rokumon is named after the amount of money needed to cross the Sanzu River. And Suzu is just bell, since she has a bell. Oboro means hazy or cloudy. Sansei (in addition to being the third) might be referencing the same Sankai thing we see for the neighborhood. I have no clue really.
>>
>>282239712

Rinne referred to it as a 神贈り物 (kami okurimono) or god gift.

>>282241162
The caption originally said "この世の豆知識". この世 (konoyo) means "this world". This is a direct counterpart to a あの世 (anoyo), which means "the other world" and refers to the afterlife both in this series and in general. The specific caption talking about the clione also referred to it as a sea creature of this world.

Clione is apparently a genus of sea angels, which are a type of sea slug.
>>
>>282241453
Big smile.
>>
>>282241472
Incredible. And yes, the heart was in the original speech bubble as well.
>>
>>282241485
Masato's "attack" here was 地獄のつむじ風 (jigoku no tsumujikaze) which does mean hell whirlwind.
>>
>>282241514
>>
>>282241520
Demon force field was 悪魔の結界 (akuma no kekkai). Also, there was a goofy parenthetical in that speech bubble as he said 食べ物(ミカン) as in "food (mandarins)". I do like calling them citrus fruits in the next bubble, that seems to be a VIZ addition.
>>
>>282241597
>>
>>282241609

>>
>>282241776
End of chapter. 地獄の業火 (jigoku no gōka) was Masato's attack. 業火 means karmic fire but it is commonly translated as hellfire. So, in a way this is a bit redundant. Anyway, good for Rinne.
>>
VIZ doesn't often do this, especially for chapter titles, but I guess they felt it was necessary. Original title was HOTが怖い (hotto ga kowai) where HOT is obviously written in English.

A lot of drinks on this cover, but I don't really feel like trying to translate them. Have fun if you're interested.

"Plump chick" was 太い女 (futoi on'na). I believe it literally means thick woman, but usually refers to fat women. Oh, and VIZ decided to convert stuff to imperial here as originally on this page and the previous, it was all in metric. 80 cm here. Appears to increase by 5 cm per yen.

生霊 once more. Disembodied spirit is a practical translation, but it more literally translates to living spirit (ie. the spirit of a living person).

福袋 (fukubukuro) means lucky bag and is a Japanese New Year's custom. It is pretty blatantly a way to get rid of excess stock but they do price these cheaper than the contents within. Typically.

>>

Oh, Rumiko explained it. With the same この世の豆知識 caption. VIZ did this "correctly" like once but it keeps coming up and it bugs me that they stopped. Admittedly, we haven't had trivia from the other world in a while so I sort of get it.

Here we see 太 again. And the Evil Spirit Entrapment Cards were 悪霊封印カードどす (akuryō fūin kādodosu) in Japanese, so Evil Spirit Sealing Cards. カード being a loanword from English.

どす being part of Raito's kansai dialect that VIZ usually didn't bother localizing.

This specific drawing on the jar is a reference to the botched restoration of the Garcia Martinez painting in a church that basically went viral in 2012. I remember when this went viral, so it is really odd seeing what I felt was a somewhat contemporary meme in a Rumiko Takahashi manga, but that dates me more than anything. I just read the Wikipedia page for this and it seems the botched restoration and the subsequent hubbub about it did bring tourists into the city, so there's a happy ending to all this.

She referenced it like, twice before but it was much more timely then. I don't know why she did it now.

Well, they probably do only break even even with the repair costs when they give the bag away for free like with Rinne. But that's not much comfort for Rinne. And pretty bad for anyone paying money for the bag.

End of chapter. スズメ蜂 (suzumehachi) apparently means sparrow bee and refers to hornets, yellowjackets and wasps in Japanese. Also, seems VIZ went a bit creative with the caption in the bottom panel as it said 霊障 (reishō) with the furigana れいしょう. This means "spiritual disturbance" or paranormal activity or similar. Basically, the joke being that in this case, all it amounts to is hives. VIZ kind of just made it direct since English doesn't have an easy phrase for it.

Original title was 幸運のおみくじ (kōun no o mi kuji). おみくじ refers to the fortunes written on little strips of paper at shrines in Japan, like the ones Sakura Mamiya is tying up here.

現実 (genjitsu, reality) was used to describe the "real" footsteps here. As for the term "paranormal noises", it once again used the term ラップ音 (rappu-on). This seems to be a loanword from the English term "rapping" as in "rapping at my chamber door" rather than the musical style. I can see why VIZ wanted to avoid any confusion, but I find it interesting that Japan refers to these unearthly sounds via that term. 音 just means sound.

Misfortune absorbing doll was 厄受け人形 (yaku uke ningyō). I think this is an accurate translation of it. Also, it seems like this is an existing concept, though I don't know how much history it has.

Ichigo is singing 痛いの痛いのとんでけ (itai no itai no tonde ke) which is basically something like "ouchy, ouchy, go away" but "pain, pain, go away" is a common translation of it since it does amusingly match the "rain, rain, go away" song. It is a little thing parents do like our "I'll kiss it and make it all better" or "There, there".

Original title was 火鉢の使い方 (hibachi no tsukaikata). I've actually briefly talked about this before, but hibachi literally means fire bowl. Designed for burning charcoal. The metal sticks are 火箸 (hibashi) or fire chopsticks. Traditional Japanese homes were well ventilated so carbon monoxide poisoning wasn't a risk. The term was coopted for an entirely different thing in the US in the 1960s. Brazier is not the same thing as a brassiere.

Funny how the ribbons instantly make her look a bit more old-fashioned. The outfit obviously also does it. And the brazier. Whatever. You get what I mean.

The line お見合いで入り婿を迎え (o miai de hairi muko o mukae) seems to contain the relevant bits of information in Japanese. Her sister met her husband through an omiai (a type of traditional matchmaking) and her husband was り婿, so welcomed. 婿養子 (mukoyoshi) is a concept I learned about from Furinkan regarding a man becoming a part of his bride's family and thereby taking her last name.

End of chapter, end of volume. Hopefully he can get some charcoal at some point.

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Rin-ne related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.

I will be returning next Wednesday to dump Volume 37 of Rin-ne. In addition, I will be dumping the Rumic one-shot (with two parts) A Thousand Years of Innocence. I technically should also be dumping Amorphous Family in that thread given the timeline, but we don't actually have that available in English at the moment (though we have the Japanese raws) and that would be a bit much for one thread.

I have a hard time describing it. It is sort of tart and sour and works well with lettuce and other greens. I also like it with fish and salty flavors in general. It is a vital part of sushi, though the rice vinegar they use is pretty mild. It balances a lot of stuff including fat and overt sweetness. Tons of sauces are vinegar based, including various hot sauces, barbecue sauces, ketchup, mustard, etc.

Section from the interview:

"For the first time in 25 years, the Hiroshima Toyo Carp won the Central League championship in 2016. It was a dream come true for me, a Hiroshima resident who had never seen the word "championship" in my entire life. But then, on October 29, 2016, was the sixth game of the Japan Series against Nichi-Ham. That day I had happened to have set up a meeting for that evening. It was the bottom of the 8th inning, with the game going back and forth, and we needed a win. I quietly turned off the TV and headed for Takahashi-sensei's house.

At that time I had just received the page on the left that I've selected. I remember opening a can of surströmming, the world's stinkiest canned food, and feeling a faint sympathy in the faces of the black cats with their whited out eyes. [21] "I know... I was like that too until a few minutes ago..." I thought. I made up my mind to keep myself focused on other things and went to the meeting.

After the meeting, I hopped in a cab to head back to the office and heard a tapping on the window of the taxi. To my surprise, I found that Takahashi-sensei had dashed down to deliver my phone, which I had left behind.

How rude of me to make Sensei, a big Hanshin fan, run and deliver my phone sporting a cover featuring Kikuchi, the second baseman of the Carp... I guess I was not in my right mind at that time, Sensei. I am really sorry... And she was so kind that evening too, she was so careful and didn't talk about baseball too much. But let's talk a lot about baseball again this year!

Kyokai no RINNE 4th editor - Kento Moriwaki (森脇健人)
Takahashi: I did not notice that Kikuchi was on the cover. Don't forget it again. I'm looking forward to the season opener soon."

I guess they got surstromming for reference?

Oh yeah, that has to be a mistranslation or something. Rinne for a fact does not pay rent. Let's see what it said. 去年の借金 (kyonen no shakkin). Last year's debt. VIZ completely screwed this up.

A mandarin. Good job finding these.

I feel like Taisho era stuff got somewhat popular around this time with manga creators. Rumiko mentioned the Demon Slayer creator in one of these author comments and that also seems to be building on that.
