So I finally watched Season 1 of Re:Zero and I gotta say it was pretty good, I gave it a 7/10. I don't necessarily think Subaru is a bad character, or badly written character, it's just the author leans too heavily on the "overconfident weak MC" trope and makes that his entire personality, having very few other notable qualities. Episodes 15 and 18 were both magnificent and heartbreaking, truly took my breath away. Honestly, I actually sympathize for Subaru because due to no fault of his own he's constantly thrust into fucked up situations where he has to hoplessly find a way to unfuck them like Satoru from Erased. But what I don't understand is why he chose Emilia over Rem. Rem genuinely loves him, and despite thinking that he does Subaru does not love Emilia he's simply infatuated with her, and Emilia clearly stated that she only sees him as more of a friend rather than a love interest. Subaru does not deserve Rem, but Rem does deserve to be happy. I feel like I shouldn't continue past Season 1 because I have this dreadful feeling that season 2 is going to undo all the character development that was established in Season 1 and it's going to legitimately piss me off, so should I continue /a/? Does it get better? Or does it get worse?

Even in rare moments where something does line up it doesn't outweigh all the bad so any time she appears people will start to roll their eyes. Lets do a simple one, do you know that Emilia has never been hurt in a fight? She's had a lot of fights, she's come out of every single one perfectly fine no matter who she was fighting. A deadly assassin, he first archbishop, the strongest archbishop, the divine dragon, a powerful witch, a dragonkin, the sword saint and so on. She's died offscreen for drama, but in fights? Invincible. As soon as she shows up you can write off anything interesting ever happening in that scene. And it doesn't make sense, she's strong but never said to be godly strong and nobody acknowledges her insane plot armor. Everyone will come out of an arc looking like shit, half dead, missing limbs, missing memories, cursed, and she'll be perfectly fine like she was out for a stroll. In a show where the notable moments are traumatic, this is huge.

Where the dragon lands is basically on Rem, who then gets captured along with another character to force the dragon to take her forces and leave the city. Emilia's whole reason for being here is to find and save Rem and Subaru, as an unintentional result of her actions Rem is captured and taken very far away. Its not that she is to blame, its that other characters should blame her, she should probably feel guilt herself like Wilhelm, Ram should be oversensitive and possibly overstep in grief. But there is nothing.
