Is this actually good?
Yeah, it's alright. Not the masterpiece people claim it to be, not the garbage /a/ claims it to be.
It's good if you're like 16. If you're older you already know a lot of shit the manga presents as if it's some kind of revelation.
>>282298955it's the most perfect depiction of a depressed loser ever captured in art
>Ask out a cute girl>She says yesCRAWLING IN MY SKIN
>>282298955It's one of the best manga made but it has this kind of edgy, whiny approach that /a/ users have let go of a long time ago so they don't like it. Like you can feel the author is one hell of a whiny guy just by reading it. But in terms of craft it's up there.
>>282298955It's kinda good but not great and is quite depressing at times. The reveals are very soul crushing.
>>282299117>It's one of the best manga maderead more manga
>>282299570Tell me some of your favorite manga
>>282298955in terms of art direction/design it's really fucking good.in terms of content its... Well, it's something.it's definitely worth reading. Especially since you can just download the full thing and go through it in a few days.I imagine if I tried reading this as it was being serialized it would've been entirely unenjoyable garbage.
>>282298955Too edgy 4 me
>>282298955not really
>>282298955Pegasus plotline is so bad. Makes it feel like a chore to read through.
>>282299588boku no pico
>>282299838Huh... maybe that one is better.
>>282298955I wasnt gay enough to identify with it so it bored me.
>>282298955Ultimate masterpiece of horror. Its ending was mean spirited, realistic, gritty and consequential to Punpun's mental deterioration. A naive dumbass like him who got corrupted only could have the punishment of living as a cuck and having to take care of a kid that isn't his.
>>282298955No, only troons and tourists like assano crap.
>>282299117>>282299710>>282300462Friendly reminder, assano is troon/faggot.
>>282301050That explains the tranny in Dead Dead Demon's Dededededededededededededededededededededededededededededede Destruction
What was the point of the Pegasus subplot? Was it literally just filler to pad out the series?
>>282301448he is the hero of the manga. the alien invasion was real and they stopped it.I'm not joking, that's according to Asano. The point was to counterbalance the other main characters which are all depressing to watch.
Is Punpun's friend from school who moved away but comes back as an adult supposed to be someone like Punpun who managed to put a mask on and pass as a normie?
>>282301050And so are the psudeos who like xer's work
>>282301610This
>>282301520>normie
>>282301050source: anon's negro ass (which is still a better source than ANN but anyway)>>282301461i thought of a "humans make up shit about how humanity is going to end but at the end we're left to suffer and we won't be granted an end to our suffering" type of interpretation but that's actually betterreminder that asano also said the ending was the worst conclusion he could think of for punpun yet many punpunfags still believe the ending was a positive one>>282301674enough, normie sounds better than normalfag. normalfag sounds too humanizing
>>282301734https://mangabrog.wordpress.com/2014/07/06/inio-asano-interview-reality-is-tough-so-read-this-manga-about-cute-girls-and-feel-better/the interview is worth reading.–Toshiki Hoshikawa and his Pegasus Orchestra take up a puzzlingly large number of pages in the latter half of the manga. What was that all about?Asano: Yeah, I suspected people wouldn’t be able to make sense out of it. Pegasus shows up in the middle of volume 7, where Punpun has graduated high school and is living on his own. It’s the point in the manga with the least going on — it’s just Punpun brooding in his tiny apartment. Now, I had that part of the manga there because I wanted to do it, but I also knew that it would be pretty dull on its own, so I thought I should add another story happening on a whole other axis.–Okay, right.Asano: That’s when I decided to use this character I’d put in earlier — Pegasus — to do a parallel story. Just as the Punpun and Aiko story is a homage to romantic comedies, the Pegasus Orchestra is actually a homage to shonen manga. I’m pretty sure no one understood this at all from reading the manga, but Pegasus was assembling a team that really was doing battle with evil.–He was?!Asano: Totally unbeknownst to Punpun, superhumans were battling to the death with forces of evil. That daruma doll that comes out of nowhere in the last volume? That’s, uh, kinda what that is. (laugh)–I had no idea that was going on.Asano: If it weren’t for Pegasus and company, a meteor or something would’ve crashed into Earth and driven mankind to extinction, just like Punpun and Aiko wanted. The Pegasus crew saved the Earth at the cost of their lives, but nobody knows it. That was the concept.
>>282301901Interesting. Yuushatachi shows Asano's interest in the concept of heroes fighting with evil.
>>282298955It's a masterpiece, but it's one of those things like Eva and HxH that contrarians will say is bad, "surface level" and so on because it has become too popular
>>282298955One of the most overrated pieces of Japanese media. Punpun is a humongously whiny faggot. I know people just like him and they are absolutely unbearable human beings.
>>282298955it's pretty based
>>282298955It's good and sympathetic until the author decides to shit on it by having Ako kill her mother for no fucking reason. One of the rare ocassions when anime jumps the shark.
I need to reread this. As a teen I really liked it, but I finally read catcher in the rye after putting it off for well over a decade, and couldn't get over how much of a whiny little hypocrite Holden was.But even if I did end up disliking punpun now that I'm older, wouldn't that just show that it's fine for something to appeal to only specific people? Could I really call this bad, even though I know 16 year old me liked it a lot?
>>282305028assano crap only appeal to troons and tourists.
>>282298955It's alright.
>>282301461>>282301901>The point was to counterbalance the other main characters which are all depressing to watch.>the Pegasus Orchestra is actually a homage to shonen mangaI thought it was supposed to be making fun of battleshonenfags. In either case, too little payoff for that much screentime IMO.
>>282301901>Joke's on the readers, I was only pretending to be retardedThat sums up the problem with punpun : if you can read the subtext and understand the author's intent then you understand asano is a fucking prick who likes to antagonize his audience
>>282298955I feel by the time the mc hit highschool it was just getting dumber and dumber, honestly I don't know how I finished it.
>>282298955It's boringIf you like it it because of projection
>>282298955>>282299117>>282299710Just read The World Is Mine and Kiichi instead.
>>282298955>story about a kid becoming a margina/neet but its actually not that bad cause surrounded and well supported by the people around him and eventually got his shit together It's a "literally me" manga for failed normalfags, seems bleak on the surface but the dude is actually living pretty decent life.
>>282301126It’s funny though, DDDDDDD was his better manga haha
>>282301050AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
>>282309507I'm the second post you replied to and I'm sure I was Arai's or whatever his name's biggest hater at some point. Now I'm mostly chill since someone I intellectually respect likes these manga but I personally don't think it's anywhere near as good as Punpun in any regard. The issue is you can't just make a nietzschean story like that. The fiction has no humility. The more important something is in fiction, the more subtle it should be depicted. See Gojo's death getting off-screened. Gege is bad at this but at least he had enough to respect off-screen it. Nietzscheans in general are just a funny bunch who think they're "the shit".
>>282309796>NietzscheansWow you are retarded.
>>282311141you literally posted a manga about "becoming the overman" or some shit kneega
>>282298955It's shit, Asano is a pseud who thinks being a cynical nihilist makes him super smart.
people never talk about how atmospheric the manga isi can't even really describe why, but it has more of a "vibe" than any other manga i read, especially when punpun is a kid. i've never been so immersed in a manga world
