Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru: Tada no Inaka no Kenjutsu Shihan datta no ni, Taisei Shita Deshi-tachi ga Ore o Houtte Kurenai Ken / From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman: My Hotshot Disciples Are All Grown up Now, and They Won't Leave Me Alone

I was kinda disappointed the anime didn't adapt the manga, so I decided to dump some of the manga.

Maybe I'll dump a chapter a day like other people are doing.

good luck.

Note that the anime is also different from the novel in some parts, so we have at least three different versions of the story (but the manga deviates the most from the novel).

And that's it for chapter 1. I'll probably continue storytime with chapter 2 tomorrow, no guarantees. I'll probably end up making a new thread, since I doubt this one will survive until then.

What's the general consensus of this series so far? I mostly like the series but it seems to do a lot of what other generic fantasy manga/anime does.

Like on one side the main character is definitely one of the strongest character we see in the series but not in a way that I would call him op and it actually makes sense considering his age and how long he as been training/training others, but then it does the whole 'the church is the real bad guys' thing and it also has a mainly female cast where they obsessed over him (not as bad as other manga but still).
>>
>>282321306
It's not "The Church" as a whole, but certain elements within it.
I would also argue that only Allucia is really "obsessed" with Beryl. The others definitely respect and admire him, but I think it pretty much stops there.

"Im tired boss" ahh cover

Thanks op
Will be lurking

>What's the general consensus of this series so far?
It's alright, the "Secretly OP" MC is kinda bland due to how eye-rolling it was when the story immediately started jerking him off instead of just slowly building up the hype. I don't think I've read it far enough to where it's explained as to why the MC is so ridiculously strong despite only being a teacher for 95% of his swordsman career.
>>
>>282321306
I really like the action.

>>282322798
I think it's just talent. He's just innately good at it. But also I feel like the manga makes him a lot stronger/better than what I saw in the anime. Maybe he's good, but not godlike in the novels like he is in the manga?

Honestly that's kinda what my feelings towards the whole series is, it kind of has a generic element that you see in other series but it doesn't go fully one note with the concept, but it also doesn't try to do something different and still sticks to what is familiar.

Probably my favorite manga about sword fighting, and I'm only reading it for the old man. I'm a bit of an autist when it comes to martial arts, so I love how much emphasis is placed on technique, and sword fights involving the old man himself are my favorite for how well they're drawn.
It hits that sweet spot between between being grounded in reality and fantastical human elements. This is besides the generic fantasy plot and tropes, it atleast explains the those plot devices well enough to where it doesn't ruin the whole story.
>>
>>282322798
The thing is that his dad is a crazy strong swordsman and he learned from him. Also, he did hunt monsters in the forest fairly regularly and I believe that they were considered to be fairly high level monsters at that.
>>
>>282320825
Thank you for posting.
>>
>>282321306
I enjoy it well enough but it's undeniably carried by the visuals.
>>
>>282321306
It's unironically some of the best fantasy sword fighting I've ever read. Flashy but still grounded enough to be feasible
>>
>>282321306
>>282323167
Oh, this applies to the manga. Was relatively disappointed by the anime.
>>
>>282327227
That seems to be the consensus.
>>
>>282321306
Plot kinda meh, 4-5 teenaged girl swordsmen (not harem wink wink nudge nudge) just kinda follows around a middle aged man.
>>
>>282322798
>teacher
the village is on the border near a mountain infested with monsters, but it's not protected by royal guards or knights. So if something happens (monsters, rowdy adventurers, bandits, etc.), the swordmaster takes care of it.
And for them, an extermination quest in the upper part of the ranking is just the annual harvest festival.
>>
>>282321306
I agree with everything you said and add that there's precious little of Lysandra. Lots of potential with the action that seemingly goes nowhere.

>Novel good enough for a manga
>Manga makes some small but noticeable tweaks to designs or narratives
>Manga gets big
>Anime adaption announced
>Anime decides they're going with the raw novel and ignoring anything the manga did differently
Every time.
They almost went with the giant fucking nose on the spider so what girl and it's a fucking crime we didn't get this scene in the anime.

>the "Secretly OP" MC is kinda bland due to how eye-rolling it was when the story immediately started jerking him off instead of just slowly building up the hype
This is why I couldnt enjoy the MC at all since everyone goes from "what an ordinary man to "wow this guy is PEAK" while he does humble japanese ojisan reaction.

Be a student for a year but be even older as your teacher.
Never shaked hands with your sensei, not even to test his strength, not even when you left the dojo.

Yeah, great change, mangafag. IT. DOES. NOT. MAKE. SENSE.
>>
>>282331718
Holding hands with other men is gay.

Beryl actually does seem kind of awkward about hand holding, you can go around the manga and he always acts like it's scandalous when the short girl is hand holding with someone, whether it's handshakes or arm wrestling.
>>
This manga is the proof that even the most basic story can be good with the right presentation. And it also helps that Sensei is an actual character instead of some half-baked self insert like in the anime
>>
>>282319823
Is this one of those manga/anime where all the female characters fall in love with the MC?
I mean, I guess it kinda less of a transgression compared to most romance since the MC isn't a spineless dweeb.
>>
>>282334198
>all the female characters fall in love with the MC
i think only 2 of them like him
