What made OG Yu-Gi-Oh! special compared to later series?

The best way forward would have been to introduce cast of characters with new conflicts that weren't tied to the original series yet were in that same world- which is exactly what they did with GX. Still a good series, just felt disconnected from the original series.

>>282322724It seems original because the audience had no base of knowledge of older manga. But beyond that it's general fatigue of the card game format that the show is tied to. People got tired of the card game routine after so many years especially as it got more complex and bogged down with mechanics. The other thing is lack of real promotion from Shueisha. Once a manga is retired from weekly shonen jump, it's really up to other producers to keep the property relevant. Shueisha gives more of shit about making new hit manga than focusing on MOST of its old stuff.

But I'm of the opinion that Yugioh anime really thrives when the antagonists thrive, and the other series had some a few more standout antagonists (besides Kaiba when he was one). As one example, I think Revolver was one of the better and more actually consistent main characters the franchise managed to put out. Despite all the lows, there were parts that felt more visceral to me because of that 'shounen on a stage' format. I've watched a huge number, too many, of action animated shows from both east and west. Over these many years of time there's a lot of Yugioh anime episodes when counting all the first 6 series I'd rank as having more rewatch value than quite a lot of the normal action shows. The only exceptions are a select few of my very top favorites
