It tries too hard to separate itself, and ends up lacking in emotional impact as a result. This deflates the potential drama and weight of the situation, and makes it harder to care because it’s not really the same person. Imagine that same plot outline but Kyon remembers everything, and it’s framed as a nearly impossible error that Yuki could regain her old personality, allowing Kyon to see her again after making his choice to stay in her world. You can keep the phone confession scene and everything, but the context is changed to make it about Yuki thanking Kyon for choosing the world she made, and telling him to take care of her other self. But instead it’s totally disconnected, and any meaning that could be linked to the story this is a spin-off of is totally null and void. The sole appeal of a Disappearance timeline story is utterly wasted, and made more frustrating by the fact that it’s actually pretty decent otherwise.

At the very least it seems her Disappearance experience holds more weight than her Endless Eight one. For a human the Endless Eight shit would still be far too great to get over because of the sheer duration, but for Nagato while this was a big part of her life she seems to be more defined by other moments (Editor in Chief highlights that better)
I dropped it when they got to that island (season 1). its like the story development is so slow. Should I return?
>>282429105It helps to remember that in the intended watch order, it's asynchronous. This puts it somewhere between a slice-of-life and a tone piece where the full weight of the events and situation don't really come into play until all the puzzle pieces connect. In some ways that can hurt the pacing, but at the same time if you aren't appreciating the characters fucking about the show never stops being that.
