I think that Rudy's body has a lot more influence than his conscious thoughts realize. There's plenty of times in the LNs when he thinks something should be getting him off but is having no reaction, usually having to do with his family. The Rudy id versus the japanese reincarnate's ego. I think it's not a coincidence that with one exception of an older woman, the only women he pursues are his same physical age.

He never completed the process because he was defeated and split into two existences, but before that happened, he left Rostelina aka Elinalise in one of his facilities in the middle of this cell altering operation and she was later found and which to us appears as a labyrinth.Zenith’s case lines up with this idea too. Her cells were altered by the core, effectively turning her into an artificial Miko. The novel teases the reader by having Fitz chapters and Sylphie chapters, in one of which Sylphie passes by a Fitz on guard duty. And Ariel tells her to use Fitz if necessary to approach Rudy. One scene in the anime with Sylphie greeting Fitz, and a few shots of her in her exercise gear in the background would have made the mystery of the sequence a bit stronger. Overall, the slice of life aspect is important because it's really the first time you get to see who Rudy is when not dealing with a crisis since the teleportation, and it lines up all of his friendships that are very important throughout the story.

Before that him not recognizing Sylphie was mostly used for Rudy to mix with various characters I guess, kidnapping Linia and Pursena, meeting with Nanahoshi, deepening his friendship with Cliff and Zanoba etc. Its an unconventional way to do things but it worked out well imo. The academy was mostly used as a hub for him to meet various characters which will have very serious arcs in the future as opposed to the lighthearted setting in which they meet.
