The original work was quite brooding and introspective, Ito never dwells much in his characters, we never learn much about them, nothing more than the necessary. His style is perfect for a short story, and that's where he shines after all. I'm surprised he picked such a book to adapt but i'm also curious to see it through the end. His Frankenstein version was not on par with the book but was still interesting and didnt lack some powerful moments.

If I'm remembering correctly there's also a huge meta narrative scene added in the Manga that isn't in the book that turns the adaptation in to a kind of weird circular sequel to the book It's been ages since I've read the manga.
